Driven by the clear need to establish an organisation to support the increasing need to employ larger numbers of welfare workers, in 1969 the Australian Institute of Welfare Officers began to make its mark on the welfare sector. Welfare workers were regarded differently to social workers, and members were adamant that they should receive recognition for their training and experience. Today they continue to dedicate their lives to welfare work in the shadow of the steady devaluing of their work through the imposition of part-time contracts and declining standards of education. As the need for community welfare continues to increase due to economic, political and other social factors, welfare and community workers continue to devote considerable time and energy to meeting, networking, planning and engaging in professional development. Renamed the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers in 1989, the appointment of an Executive Officer in July 2010 has taken the AIWCW to a new level of professionalism. This appointment occurred during the writing of this book and another chapter of the organisation’s life began. Despite administrative changes, members remain the reason for the AIWCWs existence, and this history documents and honours the extraordinary work done by many of them. Members of the AIWCW will continue working for welfare and acting as champions for their own members and members of the wider community.
