Torch Lake

For almost 100 years, the copper mines of the Keweenaw extracted copper from mined rock with the use of stamp mills. The mined rock was smashed by large stamp heads and the brittle non metallic rock broke off leaving the metallic copper. The broken poor rock was ground into "stamp sand" and simply dumped into the lake. Subsequently, large fields of stamp sand now line the Keweenaw Waterway and Lake Superior. Portions of Torch Lake by Lake Linden and Hubbell were almost completely filled in. After WWII it was found that the stamp sand still contained a great deal of copper which could be extracted at a profit by regrinding it. Because of this, in 1947 the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company built a suction dredge capable of vacuuming stamp sand off the lake bottom to a depth of 110 ft. The dredge was operated by the Quincy Mining Co. and was a common sight on Torch Lake throughout the summer months, where it could be seen "mining" the discarded tailings from Torch Lake.

Quincy Dredge No. 2:

The dredge was usually laid up during the winter months by anchoring it out in the lake, and it carried onboard pumps to combat the slow leakage of water through its hull. Apparently, at 9:00 AM on Sunday January 15, 1956, the pumps stopped working, and before they could be restarted, the dredge plunged to the bottom, leaving only her roof exposed. Raising the dredge was thought to be uneconomical and only limited salvage was conducted. Gradually, the dredge settled into the lake bottom leaving only the peak of her roof above water.

.

Today, the Quincy Dredge #1 is barely visible above the surface and can be seen from Hwy. M26 by Hubbell. Her sister dredge, the Quincy Dredge #2 lies near her, up on the beach at Mason. The Dredge #1 is a truly creepy dive and offers low visibility, especially near the lake bottom. Her steel superstructure is all that remains, and it rises over 40 ft. off the lake bottom. A good deal of machinery has been left at the site, but low visibility and general creepiness hampers most exploration. Divers who want to explore the Dredge should do so in early Spring or late Fall with a good dive light. Ice diving the Dredge in the Winter may also be a good option for divers with ice diving experience.

.

Although not a wreck which can be dived, the Quincy Dredge #2 is also interesting to explore and is partially submerged along the nearby shore. She sank under similar circumstances in the Winter of 1968. She had been constructed after the loss of Dredge #1 by R.C. Buck Contractors of Superior, Wisconsin using locally cut pine wood. The wood apparently was green and had problems with rotting and leakage which eventually caused the dredge to scuttle. Because copper prices were low, the Dredge #2, along with the reclamation project was abandoned.

This was the view from my home office window at lunchtime today. He was having his lunch break and so was I :-)

I've photographed so much wildlife from here and across on the towpath, and while the dredging is obviously very disruptive it's also necessary. Much of the wildlife is here because of the canal, and the canal has to be maintained. The fish will have swum away from the commotion, and will return very quickly when it ends. The birds too, including our much loved kingfishers. I'm a bit less optimistic for the dragonfly larvae which will have been scooped up along with the silt (see the other shots I've posted). It'll be interesting to see whether the dragons and damsels have a bad year next summer, but no doubt they will recover quickly enough.

I'm told the depth when it's all finished will be 1.3 metres. So still fairly shallow, but the red deer which wade across now and again will get a nasty shock next time!

Falmouth Working Boats were originally used for dredging for oysters and general small cargo transfer duties. 5 or 6 boats still dredge for oysters because dredging for oysters with powered vessels is prohibited.

Dredging is an excavation activity or operation usually carried out at least partly underwater, in shallow seas or fresh water areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing of them at a different location. This technique is often used to keep waterways navigable. Dredging is carried out to create a new harbour, berth or waterway, or to deepen existing facilities in order to allow larger ships access.

MY SOULDOLL PAW ARRIVED AHHH <3 And would you believe, he has a default faceup and gets to keep it 😱 (tho to be fair, with the super smol amount of Paws out there, he might very well be the only Wolf Ver. in Sandy Brown with the default faceup, thus making it unique for the time being 😂). Long babbling below 👇

Mordecai, one of the three generals under Pazuzu's first reign - when she told them to hide until she called them again (and better have that part of my army I gave you!) he went back to his tribe of shapeshifting demons and essentially became a god himself. Hey, no one said religion would ever make sense!

.

However, being a servant to their gods involves a lot of blood, castration and a permanent shift to become a god. Which ended up with him in the form of a a wolf permanently. Clan elders blame it "on the gods' mysterious ways", Mordecai assumes someone royally butchered the ritual but okay. He served under Pazuzu, he's had worse.

.

He spends the ensuing eons as a god to his clan and tribe, living a pretty good life as a reverend sort of sage slash god until word of the new power of the "Lord and Lady" reaches him. Curious as ever he sends out some whippersnappers, who've been clamoring for new adventures anyway, to see the whole mess for themselves and report back.

.

He is less surprised to hear his old superiors being described to him when they come back. After all, she promised, didn't she? So the executive decision is made that this particular tribe shall join forces with Pazuzu and Stephanus.

.

Pazuzu is delighted to have him back, less delighted when she learns that he has no clue either howto get her army out of the statue because her old self never shared instructions and she can't remember.

This is from my first roll of film through my new (to me) Mamiya M645 1000S. It was also the first roll on which I used a Gossen Lunasix 3 light meter that I bought from www.bluemooncamera.com

Looks like I was reading the meter about right!

I sold this Yashica Mat 124G a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't had a chance to scan and upload all of the photos that I like yet. So here's one!

On the final day of the Rees Dart Track from Daley's Flat Hut to Chinaman's Bluff, there is a new section of track (mostly still very rough) around and past the new Dredge Flat Lake which was caused about three years ago by two landslips opposite Sandy Bluff. The original high section of the track around Sandy Bluff is still there but the rest of the new section is rough ups and downs and added another 1-2 hrs walking time compared to three years ago.

Opening the channels at Ohio's Lake Cowan. The dredge is an Ellicott manufactured near Baltimore, Maryland. Operated by the Ohio Dept. of Transportation. Has to be quite a sight when they move this equipment from one lake or canal to another. The captain gave me a tour of the boat. Lucky day for me.

This ship was in between the piers in St. Joseph last week, I believe they are moving sand out from the river.

- corona, scettro, mantello regale.

Lieve sarò, ah, nell´agitare il braccio,

ah, lieve nel voltare indietro il capo,

sire, nell´ora del nostro commiato,

sire, alla stazione ferroviaria.

Sire, in quel momento sarà il buffone

a sdraiarsi sui binari alla stazione.
