The dredge dropped its silt from the Tweed River mouth. The sand is intended to help build up the local beaches and make the river bar crossing safer. The onshore wind and slightly choppy seas reminded me of my days at sea. Working on the barges going from island to island.

Dredged up from the D90 archive...a retro treatment of the Red Lion pub, demolished and subsequently rebuilt at Crich Tramway Village. I suppose the parked up Triumph Stag gives it away a tad

And a reflection. This body of water is called Torch Lake, but it is really a bay or cove of Lake Superior. This vessel sank in the early 1950's.

In one of the more bizarre local history events, this gold mining dredge was purchased and used by a local farmer from 1973 to 1984 to find gold in the local Porcupine Creek. It is claimed he had "moderate" success although it is hard to imagine how when Porcupine Creek is mostly dry and even the wet bits are narrower than the dredge.

After working my way around the muddy bank at 1am, I captured the initial dredge photos and then set capture of the 54 star images while I went and slept in the back of my car. At around 4 am, I came back, turned it all off and then slept again till about 6:30am when the kookaburras woke me up.

This is a blend of 2 foreground images combined with 54 star images blended in StarStax and processed to give the star spike effect. It's quite a process that takes several hours.

It was a fun night out but definitely only for the dedicated.

An abandoned gold digging dredge along the Solomon River forty miles from Nome. This dredge which operated until 1960's and was the last one to operate on this river.

Every now and then, bays and harbors need to be dredged to remove silt buildup that makes the passage too shallow for larger ships. Paddling under the giant snorkel-that-sucks-up-sand near this one in Richmond, discovered that the last welder had left their signature graffiti in welder's bead. I was a bit disoriented while under it, but later flipped it and realized it was a figure in sombrero, puffing a ciggie.

Gasoline powered suction dredge and sluice.

Can't believe this hobby is either enjoyable or profitable. Every stream in Colorado hs been prospected since 1859. And portable suction dredges have been around for decades. What are the chances of finding a gold-bearing pocket that has not been previously probed? And this one is only 50 feet from a roadside.

Meet Dan Dredge, his family is in the Dredging business. Dans reckons he can take home the race winnings with their high torque dredging sub. Typically used to dredge up reefs and sea floor to gain access to hydrolator crystals, this beast of a machine has got some punch! Best stay out of his way and be sure to avoid getting under those dredging blades they will tear you apart!

The sunrise and the dredge offshore made a dramatic scene for a photo.

Panama -The Panama Canal is a complex system of artificial lakes - natural, man-assisted, and artificial channels - and three sets of recently expanded locks. To state that its undertaking was immense is putting it lightly. Construction took place in two stages by two completely different groups, first French (1881 – 1889) then American (1904 – 1914), at an estimated cost ranging from $375-$400 million with almost 30,000 lives lost mostly to disease.

The fleet required to complete the early 20th century dig was immense; to fill the need, a number of American heavy-machinery companies were enlisted to custom-build dredgers, dredger engines, and other dredging equipment. Baltimore-based Ellicott Machine Corporation crafted six of these machines. Ellicott’s products proved their worth and their lasting power since the dredging of the Panama Canal is a proverbial work in progress. Their cutter suction dredger MINDI joined the Panamanian maintenance crew in the 1940s. Well known to mariners who have transited the Panama Canal, the 125-meter-long vessel has been in active service since 1943 (often more reliably than some newer larger dredgers), working in and around the Culebra Cut — the narrowest stretch in the Panama Canal — most recently to widen a turning radius for new bigger ships expected by 2017. Here she is moored in Gamboa, just shy of the canal’s midway point south of Lake Gatun.

Gold Dredge 8 extracted millions of ounces of gold from the frozen Alaskan ground.

Gold Dredge 8 near Fairbanks Alaska operated between 1928 and 1959 and played an essential role in mining and the economy of the Tanana Valley.

Once upon a time, according to statistics, Amsterdam had half a million bikes, and every year a million got stolen...

Stolen bikes were so cheap, that if your bike got a flat tyre, it was easier to throw it in the canal and buy another one, which obviously some folk did.

Not sure how things are now, and if they still dredge the canals to keep the waterways free of old bikes.

Love aways finds a way - as long as you are upwind of the smelly dredge spoil deposits!

Cherry Sand dredging the outer harbour at Lowestoft. When I first got there it was shrouded in sea mist, probably no more than a 100 metres away, but 10 minutes later the sun broke through and all was clear.

A self-propelled grab hopper dredger, Cherry Sand has been modernised with a Pulleman grab crane and equipped with a range of buckets to enable dredging in a wide variety of materials. The hopper well is fitted with a grid to avoid debris being deposited at sea, and discharges via hydraulically operated bottom doors.
