Off the end of St. Joseph's North Pier in Lake Michigan.

Found this on the shore of the Hudson River in Newburgh, NY. Weather conditions and the boats age, called for making this a black & white shot.

Every now and then, bays and harbors need to be dredged to remove silt buildup that makes the passage too shallow for larger ships. Paddling under the giant snorkel-that-sucks-up-sand near this one in Richmond, discovered that the last welder had left their signature graffiti in welder's bead. I was a bit disoriented while under it, but later flipped it and realized it was a figure in sombrero, puffing a ciggie.

Meet Dan Dredge, his family is in the Dredging business. Dans reckons he can take home the race winnings with their high torque dredging sub. Typically used to dredge up reefs and sea floor to gain access to hydrolator crystals, this beast of a machine has got some punch! Best stay out of his way and be sure to avoid getting under those dredging blades they will tear you apart!

A Beautiful Spring Day at the Sumpter Valley Dredge Oregon State Park

A picture perfect spring day for opening day at The Sumpter Dredge State Park in Sumpter Oregon. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge is the last of three built on the Powder River. Built in 1935, it ran until 1954. It dug up more than four million dollars worth of gold. The Dredge is located just a block off of the main street of the small historic mining town of Sumpter along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway

The tour of the dredge is a great way to explore the gold mining heritage of Eastern Oregon and the Sumpter Valley. The Dredge is currently undergoing restoration however park rangers will continue to host tours throughout the restoration process.

Visitors to the park can also try their luck at gold panning and explore the vast system of nature and interpretive trails that meander through the tailings left by the dredge as it worked it’s way up the river bed more than a half century ago.

The Sumpter Dredge is also the setting for bestselling author Patrick Carman’s, Skeleton Creek book series www.patrickcarman.com/enter/skeleton-creek

Dredging is an excavation activity or operation usually carried out at least partly underwater, in shallow seas or fresh water areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing of them at a different location. This technique is often used to keep waterways navigable.

It is also used as a way to replenish sand on some public beaches, where sand has been lost because of coastal erosion. Dredging is also used as a technique for fishing for certain species of edible clams and crabs, see fishing dredge.

Such an amazing beast laying in the cold water. Totally worth the 5 hours driving, and the freezing winds along Lake Superior.

In a pretty remote place of Idaho lies an old dredge, a relic of a bygone era centered around a gold crazed lifestyle and ran by people living in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. It still blows my mind, no matter how many times I tour the dredge, how much effort and personal sacrifice it must have been to get the thing to where it is now. Take into account that it happened almost 80 years ago, with hardly usable roads, in such a crazy environment it's a testament to desire for the shiny stuff in the ground we humans have. This night we were hoping to catch some aurora based on a strong forecast and non-stop alerts for 5 days, we manged some light pillars the night before, but the hills were too tall to get a clear view of the horizon this night. Instead what we got was a ridiculous airglow show with intense bands accenting the northern sky. Look close, can you see the Heart and Soul nebula? Wish I had taken more foreground exposures to the right to include the California Nebula, Pleiades, and Triangulum Galaxy I got in the sky.

4 exposures for this image all shot with a Nikon Z7 and Sigma Art 40mm on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer Mini tracking mount. Sky exposures are 2 minutes at ISO 800 and f2, foreground exposures are 2 minutes at ISO 1600 and f1.4.
