Yesterday afternoon, I had a delightful time teaching a Splotch Monster-making workshop to a dozen wonderful participants of all ages at the Faith Chapel Gathering Place in Lucketts, Virginia. First we worked on creating paint splotches, and letting them sit out to dry for a while, followed by some observational sketching from realistic animal figurines. Afterwards, we did a mystery splotch postcard challenge, where participants collaborated with me by getting a randomly selected postcard with a paint splotch. The paint splotches had to be turned into Splotch Monsters, which were then written about on the other side of the paper, in postcard format. If they had some time, folks could also work on their dried paint splotches. A few days ago, I had to trim a rhododendron shrub while it was in bloom. It made me sad to cut the beautiful blossoms down, so I decided to bring some of them indoors. They have been in a vase in my kitchen since then. I have been enjoying having a close-up view of the blossoms. I have been meaning to draw them, and tonight I finally got around to it. I got out my color Sharpie marker set (a Costco purchase but I love it!) and started to sketch. I kept going longer than I intended to, but I had fun and it is always good practice to draw from observation.
