I rode up to Cathedral Park in St Johns for this week's coffee outside. From there I headed south to the Portland Farmers Market to get my breakfast burrito from Enchanted Sun.
As always I took a mildly circuitous route through alleys — some paved and some unpaved doubletrack. I rode some singletrack, sort of, through former industrial areas and even passed through a Superfund site.

She's good. I'm huffin' along, eyes on the doubletrack ahead of me, and she'll suddenly veer off down some nice bike trail I hadn't noticed. Good dog!
Slick red mud and slick tires are not a happy combination, so we hiked back out after a couple hundred feet.
Monday morning, we wanted to ride the Cowichan River trail. Anita gave us directions to the end of Baker? Rd as an entrance to the trails. We weren't sure about the nasty signs so jammed out. You can get in via a bike friendly gate part way down. Look for the note for approximate location.
Climbing up the side of the Caja del Rio Plateau between Santa Fe and Los Alamos. We go up a rough side canyon to the top, then pick up an old doubletrack over to the other side. Try as I might, I can't show the steepness of this climb in a photo.

A former Conrail leader rolls through downtown Birmingham, AL heading east towards Norris Yard. The old Birmingham passenger station is to the right. CSX's doubletrack main is to the right, NS's doubletrack is just to the left with interchange tracks completing the scene.
Its been a few years since Ive done this loop. The cycling is easy. The Hike-a-bike is... moderate hiking made difficult in cycling shoes.

The snow had melted, so we thought we'd go for a ride. Big mistake. The compacted snow had melted to 2 inches of shiny wet ice, impossible to STAND on, let alone ride!
Tom I hope the sight of these chips in the grass made your lap hellish because you couldn't hike-a-bike and snack.
