A long time ago, in September 1997, the National Polymer Clay Guild (now the International Polymer Clay Association) hosted their first conference, Making History, at the Arrowmont School of Art and Craft in Gatlinburg, TN. In conjunction with the week-long conference, there was a seven-week exhibition of work representing 'The Recent History of Polymer Clay.' Chaired by artist and polymer pioneer Kathleen Dustin, the show held additional prestige as it was adjudicated by Kenneth Trapp, then curator at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery of art, craft, and design. Needless to say, I was pretty stoked when my a piece of my work was chosen to be a part of this 'history-making' exhibit.
Continuing my exploration of Japanese inro wearable containers, and inspired by the industrial design of the original Star Wars movies, this Double Chambered Vessel broke some new ground for me. The interior is split into two separate compartments. Rubber cording slides through brass tubes, allowing the lids to open while still remaining connected and in line with the vessel body. The patterned areas were created with polymer clay canework veneers. The areas of solid colour were made by applying a very thin layer of dark brown over a lighter one. When the vessel was sanded I went a little deeper in areas that, over time, would reveal the most wear; in those spots, the undercolour shows through. The vessel was distressed with a needle tool and a lino cutter, and acrylic paint was rubbed into the nicks and recesses to give the object an aged look, a technique I had learned at the first Ravensdale a year earlier from another polymer pioneer, David Forlano.
Looking at this piece again fifteen years later, I imagine it might have belonged to a young Luke Skywalker, an heirloom relic gift from his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru during teen years on the desert planet of Tatooine. In one chamber, precious water. In the other chamber, dehydrated water.

As to how this was done:
I developed this technique from the film camera days. You will need a tripod and an assistant. In a dark room – as in a basement – set up the tripod - and camera on manual @ 15 seconds and 5.6 to f8. Set an off camera flash to either full blast or auto @ say f8. Distance from flash to subject should be noted because with an off camera flash what matters is the distance from flash to subject not camera to subject.
Now, set your ‘victim’ in the first position – say the left side of the couch. Have your helper hit the shutter and walk to the right side of the couch – opposite from the ‘victim’ - and manually flash you pointing down from about 6 feet or so. Next have your ‘victim’ move to the other side of the couch and you assistant move to the left side of the couch. Have the assistant manually flash again from the same height but from the other side of the couch –the left side. You only have a 15 second window – the open shutter speed – to do this so practice doing this in the light and in the dark.
Adjust exposure from flash by either moving it closer of farther away. Do not ‘splatter’ the flash so that you minimize double exposure. Have fun!

One morning I got off work after a 13 hour graveyard shift and was met outside by a rainbow that made me forget all about being tired or any of that... I love moments like that in life, full of light and happy feelings.

On the other end of the spectrum, my laptop computer finally died, a week past Warrenty. Turns out the work they did (left it at Fry's but I think they sent it to HP) at the end of 2011 which included replacing the motherboard did NOT include replacing the Processer at the same time and that is what is fried. and that is why I have been missing in action all week!
Thanks to my bro Larry Andreasen for this laptop loaner so I can get online again, although I don't yet have any decent photo processing program that can handle my RAW images from the Rebel T2i. May be awhile before I can afford anything. At least i do have archives!
