“Dope,” a slang term used for cola drink, probably came from the once popular belief that coke contained small amounts of cocaine or from its thick medicine-like consistency. In its heyday, there were Dope Shops on East Campus in the Crowell Building and on West in the basement of the Union. The opening of the Bryan Center in1982 with a new array of food services marked the end of this campus tradition.
