The crazy bokeh was from the shimmering water in a lake ;-))

The commonplace is also beautiful.
I like how the mirror lens bokeh simplifies and abstracts chicory flowers in the background. Might've said it before, but I no longer think of these lenses as flawed. They more just have a certain set of features that are sometimes advantageous and sometimes not.
Since I've previously quipped that "Mirror lenses resolve nothing," I feel like I should set the record straight.
Is this a great lens for wildlife photography? Still no! (Though it's surprising what some people do with them.)
As an art lens, on the other hand, I think certain mirror lenses have great potential.
So a somewhat overlooked lens for a commonplace subject… I don't think it's necessarily a recipe for mediocrity.
Does this image demonstarte that? Everyone who views this will be the judge of that.

Not quite, but once I spotted the blue donuts from a neighbour's pool, it was inevitable that they were going to be fitted behind the glowing backlit leaves. Shooting through a dirty window didn't help.

The bright yellow blooms of forsythia in the early spring appear like sunshine in the garden. I unload a series of these close-up photos that I experienced with my different lenses to demonstrate their unique effect. Hope you like them :)

I am trying out a vintage 500mm f8 mirror lens. These lenses don't have a great reputation for image quality, but I am really enjoying it as an art lens. Like in this example.
Here two of the often-mentioned mirror lens drawbacks are features: the parts of the bokeh that are busy emphasize the tubular nature of the grass stems. The parts that exhibit donut bokeh suggest seeds.
The general effect is impressionistic or even abstract impressionist. Not trying to copy Seurat, Monet or de Kooning, but to do something that when it works seems to have the power to evoke them a little while doing something distinctly photographic.
Not trying to say this image is in such an elite category, but I think it does at least suggest the possibilities.
In short, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

This is dedicated to Dhina A who's beautiful work with vintage lenses has given me the encouragement I needed to try the crazy things that occur to me. Like adapting plastic projection lenses or using a 500mm mirror lens to take pictures of flowers... and then stitching that together into a wider field of view... for the beautiful f8 mirror lens bokeh.
[EDIT: I know it's not exactly popular bokeh, but I really like it with certain subjects. Usually ones where the shape somehow relates to the subject or background.]
