The daily overnight Melbourne to Adelaide 'Overland' service (broad-gauge) - which I travelled on that night - awaits departure from Melbourne's Spencer Street station during August 1993. The service still continues today (on standard gauge), but is now a daylight run and only operates on two days per week.

Diego's taking a little break after work... what? you thought he was unemployed?

This Ford Escort MkI Rally car was one of many in the sixth installment of the 'Fast & Furious' frachise.

What's the movie about?

I don't know. I watched the first few, but they have become increasingly ridiculous. Biggest drawcard are the cars, stunts, and car stunts. Some pretty ladies help too, but the plot is mostly thin on storyline, and thin on meaningful dialog.

The Escort is a cool car though. This first generation was known as the 'Dogbone' Escort, due to the shape of the grille and headlamp surrounds. Launched in the late 1960s, the Escort also proved to be an effective RWD World Rally Championship Racer in 'Mexico', 'RS1600' and 'RS2000' guises. Not overly fast by today's standards, the sporty Escorts were appreciated at the time for their relative affordability.

This Escort is built for #mocaroundgang build challenge #mocaround67 titled #hollywoodrides hosted by @my_lego_garage

The Mark I Ford Escort was introduced in the United Kingdom at the end of 1967, making its show debut at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. It replaced the successful long running Anglia. The car was presented in continental Europe as a product of Ford's European operation. Escort production commenced at Halewood in England during the closing months of 1967, and for left hand drive markets during the autumn/fall of 1968 at the Ford plant in Genk. Initially the continental Escorts differed slightly from the UK built ones under the skin. The front suspension and steering gear were differently configured and the brakes were fitted with divided hydraulic circuits; also the wheels fitted on the Genk-built Escorts had wider rims.[1] At the beginning of 1970, continental European production transferred to a new plant on the edge of Saarlouis, West Germany. The MkI was also built in Israel between 1969 - 1975.

The Escort was a commercial success in many parts of western Europe, but nowhere more than in the UK, where the national best seller of the 1960s, BMC's Austin/Morris 1100 was beginning to show its age while Ford's own Cortina had grown, both in dimension and in price, beyond the market niche at which it had originally been pitched. In June 1974, less than six years after the car's UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two millionth Ford Escort, a milestone hitherto unmatched by any Ford model outside the USA.It was also stated that 60% of the two million Escorts had been built in Britain.[3]

The Escort had conventional rear wheel drive and a four-speed manual gearbox, or 3 speed automatic transmission. The suspension consisted of a simple live axle mounted on leaf springs, but with rack-and-pinion steering. The Mark I featured contemporary styling cues in tune with its time: a subtle Detroit-inspired "Coke bottle" waistline and the "dogbone" shaped front grille — arguably the car's most famous stylistic feature. Similar styling featured in the larger Cortina Mark III (also built in West Germany as the Taunus) that was launched in 1970.

Initially, the Escort was sold as a 2-door saloon (with circular front headlights and rubber flooring) on the "De Luxe" model. The "Super" model featured rectangular headlamps, carpets, a cigar lighter and a water temperature gauge. A 3-door estate was introduced at the end of March 1968 which, with the back seat folded down, provided an impressive 40% increase in maximum load space over the old Anglia 105E estate, according to the manufacturer. The estate featured the same engine options as the saloon, but it also included a larger 7½ inch diameter clutch, stiffer rear springs and in most configurations slightly larger brake drums or discs than the saloon. A panel van appeared in April 1968 and the 4-door saloon in 1969.

Underneath the bonnet was the Kent Crossflow engine. Diesel engines on small family cars were very rare, so the Escort featured initially only petrol engines — in 1.1 L, and 1.3 L versions. A 940 cc engine was also available in some export markets, but few were ever sold.

There was a 1300GT performance version, with a tuned 1.3 L Kent (OHV) engine sporting a Weber carburetor and uprated suspension. This version also featured additional instrumentation with a tachometer, battery charge indicator and oil pressure gauge. The same tuned 1.3 L engine was also used in a variation sold as the Escort Sport, that used the flared front wings from the AVO range of cars, but featured trim from the more basic models. Later on a further "executive" version of the Escort was produced known as the 1300E. This featured the same 13" road wheels and flared wings of the Sport, but was trimmed in an upmarket, for that time, fashion with wood trim on the dashboard and door cappings.

Hannu Mikkola's 1970 World Cup Rally -winning Escort.

Roger Clark's 1972 RAC Rally -winning Escort RS1600.

There was, in the early days of the Escort, a higher performance for rallies and racing — the Escort Twin Cam, which featured an engine with a Lotus-made 8-valve twin camshaft head fitted to the 1.5 L non-crossflow block, which had a bigger bore than usual to give a capacity of 1558 cc. Production of the Twin Cam, which was originally produced at Halewood, was phased out as the RS1600 was developed.

The Mark I Escorts became very successful as a rally car, and they eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time.[5] The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s / early 1970s, and arguably the Escort's greatest victory was in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally being driven by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola. This gave rise to the famous Escort Mexico (1.6 L "Kent" engined) special edition road versions in honour of the rally car.

In addition to the Mexico, the RS1600 was developed which used a Kent engine block with a 16-valve Cosworth cylinder head. This engine was essentially a detuned Formula 3 engine designated BDA, for Belt Drive A Series. Both the Mexico and RS1600 were built at Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) facility located at the Aveley Plant in South Essex. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells, making them an ideal model for rallying. Even today Mark I Escorts are still popular in the amateur rally scene. The BDA engine has a distinctive growling which can be heard for quite a distance when the vehicle is being driven hard, such as in competition.

Ford also produced an RS2000 model as a more "civilised" alternative to the somewhat temperamental RS1600, featuring a 2.0 L Pinto (OHC) engine. This also clocked up some rally and racing victories; and pre-empted the hot hatch market as a desirable but affordable performance road car. Like the Mexico and RS1600, this car was produced at the Aveley plant.

The Escort quickly became one of Britain's most popular cars, comfortably outselling the conceptually similar Vauxhall Viva HB launched two years earlier. It was also a success on export markets, though in the larger European markets it tended to be outsold by the Opel Kadett, its General Motors rival. The car was built in Germany, Britain and in Commonwealth countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

The mold seems to be the same as the blockletter logo, rounded letters bricks that are found in Denmark. I believe this mold moved to Norway when LEGO introduced bricks with the Dogbone logo.

For Bendigo Bricks, VRLGM did a 'dogbone' layout with a return loop at each end. At the right hand end was my bridge and return loop with a semi-hidden staging yard behind. At the left hand end trains went through Teunis's tunnel with a return loop behind the back boards.

My new blue Dogbone logo bricks.

The colour is darker than the GEAS blue but does remind me of it.

The mold seems to be the same as the "blockletter logo, long bar on the G, scratched mold numbers" bricks that are found in Denmark. I believe this mold moved to Norway when LEGO introduced bricks with the Dogbone logo.

One of the earliest editions of the mighty Ford Escort, a car of humble roots that soon became an icon for so many reasons!

The Ford Escort was a small family car that was manufactured by Ford from 1968 to 2004. The Ford Escort name was also applied to several different small cars produced in North America by Ford between 1981 and 2003.The first use of the Escort name was for a reduced specification version of the Ford Squire, a 1950s estate car version of the Ford Anglia 100E, though this did not sell well by comparison to the other members of the 100E family.

The Mark I Ford Escort was introduced in the United Kingdom at the end of 1967, making its show début at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968, replacing the successful long running Anglia. The car was presented in continental Europe as a product of Ford's European operation. Escort production commenced at Halewood in England during the closing months of 1967, and for left hand drive markets during September 1968 at the Ford plant in Genk.

Initially the continental Escorts differed slightly from the UK built ones under the skin. The front suspension and steering gear were differently configured and the brakes were fitted with dual hydraulic circuits; also the wheels fitted on the Genk-built Escorts had wider rims. At the beginning of 1970, continental European production transferred to a new plant on the edge of Saarlouis, West Germany.

The Escort was a commercial success in several parts of western Europe, but nowhere more than in the UK, where the national best seller of the 1960s, BMC's Austin/Morris 1100 was beginning to show its age while Ford's own Cortina had grown, both in dimensions and in price, beyond the market niche at which it had originally been pitched. In June 1974, six years into the car's UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two millionth Ford Escort, a milestone hitherto unmatched by any Ford model outside the USA. It was also stated that 60% of the two million Escorts had been built in Britain. In West Germany cars were built at a slower rate of around 150,000 cars per year, slumping to 78,604 in 1974 which was the last year for the Escort Mark I.

Many of the German built Escorts were exported, notably to Benelux and Italy; from the West German domestic market perspective the car was cramped and uncomfortable when compared with the well-established and comparably priced Opel Kadett, and it was technically primitive when set against the successful imported Fiat 128 and Renault 12. Subsequent generations of the Escort made up some of the ground foregone by the original model, but in Europe's largest auto-market the Escort sales volumes always came in well behind those of the General Motors Kadett and its Astra successor.

The Escort had conventional rear-wheel drive and a four-speed manual gearbox, or 3-speed automatic transmission. The suspension consisted of MacPherson strut front suspension and a simple live axle mounted on leaf springs. The Escort was the first small Ford to use rack-and-pinion steering. The Mark I featured contemporary styling cues in tune with its time: a subtle Detroit-inspired "Coke bottle" waistline and the "dogbone" shaped front grille – arguably the car's main stylistic feature. Similar Coke bottle styling featured in the larger Cortina Mark III (also built in West Germany as the Taunus) launched in 1970.

Initially, the Escort was sold as a 2-door saloon (with circular front headlights and rubber flooring on the "De Luxe" model). The "Super" model featured rectangular headlamps, carpets, a cigar lighter and a water temperature gauge. A 2 door estate was introduced at the end of March 1968 which, with the back seat folded down, provided an impressive 40% increase in maximum load space over the old Anglia 105E estate, according to the manufacturer. The estate featured the same engine options as the saloon, but it also included a larger, 7 1⁄2-inch-diameter clutch, stiffer rear springs and in most configurations slightly larger brake drums or discs than the saloon. A panel van appeared in April 1968 and the 4-door saloon (a bodystyle the Anglia was never available in for UK market) in 1969.

Underneath the bonnet was the Kent Crossflow engine also used in the smallest capacity North American Ford Pinto. Diesel engines on small family cars were rare, and the Escort was no exception, initially featuring only petrol engines – in 1.1L, and 1.3L versions. A 940cc engine was also available in some export markets, but few were ever sold.

There was a 1300GT performance version, with a tuned 1.3L Crossflow engine with a Weber carburetor and uprated suspension. This version featured additional instrumentation with a tachometer, battery charge indicator, and oil pressure gauge. The same tuned 1.3L engine was also used in a variation sold as the Escort Sport, that used the flared front wings from the AVO range of cars, but featured trim from the more basic models. Later, an executive version of the Escort was produced known as the 1300E. This featured the same 13 inch road wheels and flared wings of the Sport, but was trimmed in an upmarket, for that time, fashion with wood trim on the dashboard and door cappings.

A higher performance version for rallies and racing was available, the Escort Twin Cam, built for Group 2 international rallying. It had an engine with a Lotus-made eight-valve twin camshaft head fitted to the 1.5L non-crossflow block, which had a bigger bore than usual to give a capacity of 1,557cc. This engine had originally been developed for the Lotus Elan. Production of the Twin Cam, which was originally produced at Halewood, was phased out as the Cosworth-engined RS1600 production began. The most famous edition of the Twin Cam was raced on behalf of Ford by Alan Mann Racing in the British Saloon Car Championship in 1968 & 1969, sporting a full Formula 2 Ford FVC 16-valve engine producing over 200hp. The Escort, driven by Australian driver Frank Gardner went on to comfortably win the 1968 Championship.

The Mark I Escorts became successful as a rally car, and they eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time. The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s /early 70s, and arguably the Escort's greatest victory was in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally being driven by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola. This gave rise to the Escort Mexico (1.6L Crossflow-engined) special edition road versions in honour of the rally car.

In addition to the Mexico, the RS1600 was developed with 1,601cc Cosworth BDA which used a Crossflow block with a 16-valve Cosworth cylinder head, named for Belt Drive A Series. Both the Mexico and RS1600 were built at Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations facility located at the Aveley Plant in South Essex. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells utilising seam welding in places of spot welding, making them more suitable for competition.

After updating the factory team cars with a larger 1701 cc Cosworth BDB engine in 1972 and then with fuel injected BDC, Ford also produced an RS2000 model as an alternative to the somewhat temperamental RS1600, featuring a 2.0L Pinto engine. This also clocked up some rally and racing victories; and pre-empted the hot hatch market as a desirable but affordable performance road car. Like the Mexico and RS1600, this car was produced at the Aveley plant.

This generation of the car eventually ended production in 1975, taking on a much more angular design for the next model year. The car would however continue to gain further fame in the hatchback war years of the 1980's, with the Ford Escort XR3i going head-to-head with the Volkswagen Golf GTi in the battle for the most powerful and greatest hot hatch. This would eventually evolve into what many consider the greatest European sporty Ford ever made, the RS Cosworth, a favourite amongst rally champions and yobbos everywhere!

The RR10 Bomber build-it-yourself kit is loaded with features allowing you to customize it and add your own electronics for the ultimate rock racer! Building on the current, successful ready-to-run model, this kit version includes a wide variety of desirable option parts that deliver next level performance and durability. Hard anodized aluminum suspension links, hard anodized aluminum steering links, long travel rear sway bar, hardened steel universal axles allowing up to 50 degrees of steering, aluminum lower link plates, and King adjustable machined aluminum shocks, all riding on sticky BFGoodrich® Baja T/A® KR2 tires wrapped around 2.2 Walker Evans Racing beadlock wheels.

FEATURES:

HARD ANODIZED MACHINED ALUMINUM THREADED LINKS:

The upper and lower suspension links as well as the steering tie rod and drag link are machined from aluminum to reduce flex and provide precise control over the roughest terrain. The tubes are threaded at both ends for easy assembly and they use larger and stronger M4 hardware.

HARD ANODIZED MACHINED ALUMINUM STEERING LINKS:

Our machined aluminum steering links give you more precise steering feel and response to help keep your rig pointed in the right direction. They’re hard anodized and use larger and stronger M4 hardware for durability.

LONG TRAVEL REAR SWAY BAR:

The pursuit of horsepower and the ability to put the power to the ground is one of the main aspects of offroad racing. This unique torsion bar design with long pivot arms used in conjunction with the long travel suspension is designed to help control the torque twist associated with massive power. This system also helps reduce body roll and adds stability at high speeds.

UNIVERSAL AXLES:

Our universal joint axles increase steering angle to 50 degrees, that's 60% over the stock dogbone/drive cup setup. Our universals provide smoother action for a higher performing, efficient drivetrain. The universal is oversized; a design you'd see on 1/8 scale vehicles and it's made of hardened steel so it's capable of handling extreme power.

• AR60 OCP universal axle set

• Up to 50 degrees of steering

• Smooth action for an efficient drivetrain

• Oversized design for durability

• Hardened steel construction

KING ADJUSTABLE MACHINED ALUMINUM SHOCKS:

The included aluminum King Shocks feature precision machined pistons which offer smooth performance throughout the range of travel. Made to tight tolerances, these aluminum shocks feature clear coated polished aluminum bodies, machined aluminum caps and aluminum preload spacers for precision shock adjustments. The rear shocks are mounted on the links rather than at the axle, allowing for more suspension travel which is better for high speed handling.

ALUMINUM LOWER LINK PLATES:

Includes hard anodized 2mm aluminum lower link plates for added durability and stiffness of the rear 4 link suspension.

2.2 WALKER EVANS RACING BEADLOCK WHEELS:

Officially licensed Walker Evans Racing beadlock wheels dressed in an aggressive all black style and they work with most 2.2 tires. Our IFD™ (Interchangeable Face Design) wheel system makes it easy to dress it up with a new look. The wheel design allows you to vary the amount of air passing through the breather holes. You can select between having one, two or three open holes (two, four or six total) by rotating the inner (beadlock) ring. The position is locked with reassembly.

• Three piece beadlock design

• Utilizes new 2x11mm pins for added strength

• Updated plastic hub adapter to eliminate slop and capture the new 2x11mm pin

• Adjustable breather holes for fine tuning tire performance

• Compatible with most 2.2 tires

• Easy six screw disassembly

BFGOODRICH® BAJA T/A® KR2 TIRES - R35 COMPOUND:

In the full-size world of off-road racing, BFGoodrich® tires have proven to be the ‘go-to’ tire for numerous racing victories, including Randy Slawson piloting them to victory at the 2013 and 2015 King of the Hammers. Axial’s version of this tire captures the same aggressive look and provides remarkable performance on a wide variety of surfaces. This is the perfect tire for this style of vehicle due to its high level of performance and diversity.

AR60 OCP-AXLE™:

The AR60 OCP-Axle™ is constructed from high strength composite material which has a low flex rate but is not as brittle as standard glass filled nylon. The combination of our axles and a true 4-link suspension gives you optimal performance for any terrain with the look of a real 1:1 vehicle.

• Off-center pumpkin design

• Axle tubes are reinforced with a boxed-in axle truss

• High strength composite material

• Updated steering knuckles for dual shear, also eliminates secondary bolt on plate

I love what this Berber woman is wearing! Under her aqua robe, she wears another black robe bearing an overall pattern of dog paws and dog bones. This is what has been so much fun about returning home and studying the photos I took in Morocco. I am passing these people in a bus and could not tell what she was wearing - she simply looked interesting. The women in these towns in Morocco wear the most interesting clothes, sometimes with patterns that may not mean much, if anything, to them. Thus, one may find them garbed in clothes with cartoon figures like Sponge Bob or Mickey Mouse. It's so wild!

Not sure if this logo is printed - or a kind of waterslide decal?

A part of a milk bone ..that strangely, the dog doesn't like but the hamster does. The hamster cracked us up by picking it up and attempting to move it only to constantly slide down due to the weight.

One of the most popular commercial bodies offered on the Ford Model A's 103.5-inch (263cm) wheelbase was the type 79-A Panel Delivery. Featuring a fully enclosed rear end offering both ample space and privacy, they became a common site in the city and country alike. As was often the case, Ford contracted the bodywork to a local coachbuilder, in this case Budd. The body would be produced until 1930 when it was replaced by the restyled, Murray built type 79-B Panel Delivery.

This Andalusite Blue and Black Panel Delivery joined the Hartogh Collection in 2014. According to its Modern Dutch Registration, it came into the Netherlands in 1975. Well presented, it is fitted with an auxiliary horn, extra driving light, and a Boyce Motometer on a dogbone radiator cap. While the body dates from 1928/29, the engine is from very early 1930. These practical commercial vans can still continue to serve their intended purpose today—with plenty of space on the side to promote a business and room within to transport goods.

(Or, for Maxx, early 10x20 bricks).

This is not a compete series, but it is a nice overview of some of the main versions. For more see brickfetish.com/700e/ and www.historia.com.pt/legos/Textos/plates/10X20plate.htm

From left to right:

1) The thin baseplate. Introduced in 1951 this was the first new part added to the Automatic binding bricks (in addition to the slotted 2x4, 2x2 and the flat doors & windows).

There seem to be 2 different materials out there. It seems like the first plates were made from CA plastic. They are often extremely warped and broken. A later version was made from a different, harder plastic. These have been linked to Swedish PRIMA sets. This plate however was found on a flea-market about 30 km from Billund.

The studs on my plate have a smaller diameter than the regular studs.

2) A 10x20 brick with a blockletter logo on the bottom. No logo on the studs. Introduced around 1953.

3) 10x20 brick with a dogbone logo on the bottom. No logo on the studs. Introduced around 1954/55.

Two versions of this brick exist: type 1 (shown on the photo) with smaller mold break and smaller supports and type 2 with a larger mold break and longer supports.

4) Brick with hollow studs and the (old) logo on the studs. Introduced in 1958. Many versions exist.

Materials...

These bricks were made BEFORE LEGO changed its material to ABS plastic, but none of them feel or sound like CA plastic. They have not warped. Does anyone know what material they are?

DESIGN STUDY FOR A TOY TRAIN LAYOUT

This is a design study for an O gauge toy train layout losley based on those that were used by Lionel in department stores back in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

However, this layout features track and accessories from a modern day competitor to Lionel: MTH Railking. ( www.railking.com ) I find their track and components to be of a bit higher quality than those that Lionel still makes.

Layout designed use RR-Track software. ( www.rrtrack.com )

Exported as a bmp and then converted to a JPEG for uploading. My apologies for the poor quality.

• Updated differential cover and servo mount for a new look

WB8 HD WILDBOAR™ DRIVESHAFTS, FRONT AND REAR:

The WB8 HD driveshafts feature an updated design with a larger diameter cross pin (2x11mm) along with an M4 Screw Shaft (2mm hex drive) for added strength. A center splined slider floats between each end and features added material which reduces flex and fatigue.

• 3-piece driveshaft with strengthened slider-floater tube.

• Increased surface at the connection between the ball joints and output shaft tubes.

• 2x11mm cross pin adds 25% more surface area providing more strength for the ball joint.

• Captured cross pin design eliminates older set screw design for more durability and easy maintenance.

MULTIPLE SHOCK/LINK POINTS AND DUAL SHEAR SHOCK MOUNTS:

We've included a variety of shock mounting points for running dual shock setups and for additional suspension tuning options. On the skid plate you'll find two front upper link mount positions and three rear upper link mount positions. All shock-mounting locations are dual shear with optional secondary shock mounts allowing for dual shock setups.

REALISTIC SCALE DETAILS:

Realistic scale details include molded driver figures, three pairs of helmets, molded shock reservoirs, a fuel cell, Bomber Fabrication body panels, two full color decal sheets with enough graphics for two completely unique looks, and a fully licensed scale tube chassis.
