Shisen-dō (詩仙堂) is a Buddhist temple of the Sōtō Zen sect in Sakyō-ku, Kyoto, Japan. It is registered as a historic site of Japan. It stands on the grounds of its founder, the Edo period intellectual Ishikawa Jōzan (1583–1672), who established the temple in 1641.

A room in the main temple displays portraits of thirty-six Chinese poets. The selection of the poets was based on the opinion of Hayashi Razan. The portraits were executed by Kanō Tan'yū. This and some other parts of the building date to the time of Ishikawa Jōzan.

The temple's gardens are considered masterworks of Japanese gardens.[1] One of them includes a device called a sōzu, a type of shishi-odoshi designed to scare away wild animals such as deer by making a loud noise. Water trickles into a bamboo tube, and when it reaches a certain level, it upsets the balance of the tube. The tube tips over on a pivot, discharging the water, and turns upright, striking a rock and emitting a loud clapping noise.

I was back from Tokyo and you just had a meeting with Jason Wu in Portland as he wanted you for his new fragrance ad campaign ... Lukas texted me to tell me he sent his new girl calling you his special lady and I wondered if Elyse knew he called you that way ... He warned me to be super nice with you as it was your birthday and that it was your first all alone ...

The Old Clam House in San Francisco had claimed for a long time that it was the oldest continuously run establishment in San Francisco until someone at the Hall of Records dug into the old maps and licenses and discovered that it actually opened in 1891 and not 1861 as the sign so states…hehehe…WHOOPS

BUT: It was closed for two years and that would erase the “continuously run” moniker…

Even though The Tadich Grill opened in 1849, it has since moved from it’s original location…

I can admit growing up near this establishment, that I can’t vouch for the 1861 part but I have slurped up plenty of the bi-valves while out imbibing with the fellas…

ESA’s ultra-precise deep-space navigation technique – Delta-DOR – tells us where spacecraft are, accurate to within a few hundred metres, even at a distance of 100 000 000 km.

In order to navigate a spacecraft around our Solar System we have to know how far away it is, how fast it is travelling and in what direction. Each of these steps are explained in this new infographic, "How not to lose a spacecraft".

Walking back to my car over on Ottawa Street in Hamilton, Ontario, I noticed the sign on the ‘Church of Christ’. Although the large blue lettering should be what attracted attention, it was the sub-title ‘Doing Bible Things In Bible Ways’ that actually caught my eye. Specifically, I noticed the first part of that, ‘Doing Bible Things’, as the rest of that line was less obvious from the angle at which I was approaching the building. And then in the background, the ‘Records’ sign belonging the the neighbouring store added a bit of incongruity to the composition. And, as luck would have it, the blues all worked together. - JW

To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.

Here's an exciting vintage photograph showing Dornier Do X in New York harbour with the impressive skyline of Manhattan in the background. The German flying boat is surrounded by several smaller vessels, so the photo was most likely taken on the aircraft's arrival in New York on August 27, 1931.

The photo's origin

Usually, I collect private shots from family albums only, trying to avoid professional photos altogether. I'm making an exception here, as this is almost certainly the work of a press photographer. I purchased the print – measuring 161 x 123 millimetres – from a German online vendor who claimed it to be original vintage. I'm not so sure about that, but since it's printed on fibre-based paper (rather than the modern polyethene type), it may be an earlier reprint, possibly dating from the 1950s or 1960s. Sadly, there's nothing stamped or written on reverse. If anybody can supply more information on this photo, please drop me a line.
