BACK IN THE PACK: Sculptor David Marshall made another bronze corgi from scratch to replace the one stolen from High St after the February 2011 earthquake.
Christchurch's trio of ice-cream loving corgis have been reinstated.
The three bronze statues were returned to High St, outside Alice in Videoland and C1 Espresso, last week.
One corgi was stolen shortly after the February 2011 earthquake and the Christchurch City Council removed the remaining two for safe-keeping.
The third corgi was reproduced by sculptor David Marshall during the past year and the trio were reinstated to the footpath in High St last Thursday. "I'm pleased they've gone back where they were. These guys are just going . . . back to business," he said.
The life-sized corgis were first installed in 2003 to mark the Queen's golden jubilee and cost $8000 each.
Marshall said he had to make the third corgi again "from scratch" because he had not saved the original moulds but he believed the finished product was almost identical to the original corgi.
The work took about a year and was paid for by insurance money, he said.
"It was quite nice to have them back in place. Every one who came past said it was nice to have them back."
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said she liked the corgis and was pleased to hear they had been returned.
There had been some controversy about putting them in High St when they were first installed but the location was fitting post-earthquake given all the rebuilding work happening in the area, she said.
