Charity Print Auction for Japan:Snow Geese
The news out of Japan this past week has been truly heartbreaking. Just trying to do my part to help out.
I'm auctioning an unframed, signed 11x17 print. The photo is printed on Kodak Professional Endura Supra Lustre paper, and it's absolutely gorgeous.
Bidding will begin at $40 USD.
If you'd like to bid, please do so in the comments of this photo. If you want to bid but don't have a flickr account -- email me at sgelatt@msn.com or leave a message on my Facebook page, and I'll enter the bid below for you.
The auction for this print will end on Tuesday, March 22 at 12 noon Eastern time/1 PM CST.
By bidding you agree that if you are the winner of this auction, you will donate the full winning bid to either Doctors Without Borders for their efforts in Japan www.doctorswithoutborders.org/ or the American Red Cross for their efforts in Japan american.redcross.org/site/Donation2?idb=0&5052.donat... .
Once I receive proof of your donation via email (for this auction, it must be in the form of a screen capture), I will then send the print to you. I will cover the cost of the unframed print and shipping.
Thanks so much for bidding.

A ferry leaves the mainland for the Grenadine island of Bequia. The ride is about an hour, but can be quite challenging at times given the rough seas, particularly at this time of the year.
Size: 6.25”x6.25”
Tesserae: stained glass, millefiori, seed beads, gem stone beads, glitter and photograph (mulberry tree leaves)
I chose the Bombyx mori moth (latin for silkworm of the mulberry tree) because it is used in traditional Chinese medicine to heal. So I thought it was fitting for this charity auction.
Artist Statement:
I am inspired by the flowers, plants and creatures that Mother Nature has produced. I am fascinated with all the variety of colors and shapes they come in. I use stained glass, beads, millefiori, and photography to create vibrant and colorful mosaics of my interpretation of these creatures found in the natural world.

The planet is marshalling its resources to help Haiti. Many are taking action and are determined to shine a light where it is most needed. In acknowledgement of that, this one small candle burns brightly with hope and great resolve.
The needs of this island nation and her people is great, and to the point of being truly overwhelming. But the gallant volunteers soldier on and the populace reaches out to extend helping hands. I am touched beyond measure while watching the reports of this horrific disaster to see those Haitians who have so very little giving what they can to those who have nothing.
It's hard to choose how to concentrate your personal efforts and where to give in the face of such incredible need. Watching CNN reportage on this, there are two volunteer agencies (among many) which could use our support.
One is Artists for Peace and Justice (founded by Father Rick Frechette who is a priest AND a doctor) which (according to a member and spokesperson, Maria Bello) has no overhead and gives all monies to emergency aid. Here's a quote from the website: "If you are asking yourself what you can do, they desperately need emergency cash - any amount. Get it to us, and we will get a hundred percent of it into the hands of Father Rick and his team, to help dig people out of the collapsed hospital and schools, to buy emergency medicine, to supply badly needed water and food, to help fly in doctors for the wounded children, and so much more." There's an amazing video there and information for donating.
The other is Doctors Without Borders (as Green Wellies has so eloquently spoken about regarding her donation to that organization). We, who are fortunate to have so much, must remember those who have so much less. Her photo of the Buddha and candle inspired me to post my own photos focusing on how to help with the massive humanitarian aid Haiti is in such desperate need of.
Or go here for a comprehensive list of approved relief agencies and choose the organization you most trust to use your donation appropriately.
I cannot give $1 million dollars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but I can give something. Every donation is like a precious drop of water and helps the level rise.
It is almost too much to bear, but there is great hope for Haiti and the spirit of this country will continue to burn brightly.

Beyond Borders: Mosaic Auction for DWB/MSF
September 2012
Size: 6" x 6" framed
Tesserae: Millefiori, stained glass, beads, rhinestones, sequins, trims
About me:
I am a self-taught contemporary mosaic artist who enjoys exploring color, texture and movement with a variety of materials.

Murano Millefiori
Website: www.MuranoMillefiori.com
Owner of Murano Millefiori, which carries the largest selection of Italian millefiori for artwork, mosaics, fusing and bead making.
New Jersey, USA
Size: 6”x6”
Tesserae: Scrap stained glass, millefiori, vitreous tile, and salvaged mirror, on 1/4" environmental MDF
Statement:
This work depicts an abstract forest at dawn. On a salvaged mirror substrate, I have used scrap stained glass for the leaf canopy and the hilly ground, with accents of Italian glass millefiori. I left the tree trunks and branches as "open cut-outs" with no tessera, which allows the mirror substrate to show through and form the tree trunks and branches. The trees are all "interlocked" with one another by their web of branches. My intention with the overall composition is to suggest that between the heavens and the earth we are all interconnected ("Beyond Borders") and by using the mirror as a major element, I hope to remind anyone who views the piece and sees their reflection in the trees, that they, too, are part of that infinite connection.
About me:
My name is Francesca De Lorme and I am the owner of Studio Fresca in northeastern Vermont. While I enjoy art of all kinds and work in a variety of media, as well as teach art part-time at nearby Burke Mountain Academy, I am totally and irrevocably smitten with mosaic. When I'm not delving into dumpsters or scavenging around salvage yards, I create Mixed-Media Mosaic Art using primarily recycled, salvaged and reclaimed materials — and I love the entire process. The art and craft of making mosaics is totally engrossing to me because it involves the heart in the passion of creation, the head in fitting together all the elements of the puzzle, and the hands in fine craftsmanship. For me, art is both interaction and expression; an exploration of discovery that perfectly weds the mind, the soul and the body in an ongoing, thought-provoking, and always entertaining, dialog...with myself, with the world around me — and with ALL the stuff, both physical and metaphysical, of life. I am affiliated with several local and national artists associations and my work has been consistently chosen for exhibit in major and minor juried shows. I also offer small group and individual classes; serve as Artist-in-Residence for schools; plan, design and coordinate community public art projects; and sell some mosaic materials and supplies.

About ‘Glasswing’:
This is a fused mosaic with a custom-made fused Glasswing butterfly. A fused mosaic is a glass-on-glass mosaic, where powdered frit (glass) is applied instead of grout, then fired in a kiln. A photo of a nasturtium by David Abdullah inspired the background. The Glasswing (Greta oto) butterfly has orange borders around its transparent wings. The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like clear glass, as it lacks the colored scales found in other butterflies. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a sturdy butterfly, and is toxic to predators. Their natural habitats are the rain forests and tropical areas of Central and South America.
About Me:
I have been a stained glass artist since the early 1980’s, specializing in Tiffany-style lamps. I branched into mosaics about 6 years ago to take advantage of all my scrap glass. I have recently been incorporating fusing techniques into my mosaics. I enjoy working in glass because of the wide choice of color palette, glass types and textures. Magic happens when light is transmitted through or reflected off a glass art piece. I also enjoy the challenge of working in 3-D, and I add intricacy, flow and bright colors to my designs. Some of my award winning work has appeared in juried shows in California, Washington, Nevada, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.

This it the portrait of a very nice old lady, that I´ve seen walking back from the local market.
I feel lucky that I could take this picture. She is a fabulous example of the burmese people, making the best out of there life and smile.
Please keep in mind:
Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...
- Unicef
and of a smaller German organisation (I met one of the responisbles during my trip)
This is an incomplete list, I´ve also seen www.doctorswithoutborders.org and there are others.
Please help, the burmese people need it.

Six Years of Rohingya Refugee Crisis in Bangladesh: From Here to Where?

The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority from the North Rakhine State in western Burma. Over the past forty years, the Burmese government has systematically stripped over 1 million Rohingya of their citizenship. Recognized as one of the most oppressed ethnic groups in the world, the Rohingya are granted few social, economic and civil rights. They are subjected to forced labor, arbitrary land seizure, religious persecution, extortion, the freedom to travel, and the right to marry. Because of the abuse they endure in Burma, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Burma to seek sanctuary in neighboring Bangladesh. In the refugee camps along the south east coast where they settle, most are not recognized as refugees and are considered illegal economic migrants. Unwanted and unwelcome, they receive little or no humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to exploitation and harassment. In recent years, the Rohingya have paid brokers to smuggle them by boat from Bangladesh to Malaysia and even beyond to Australia, sparking the attention of governments throughout the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has confirmed that the statelessness of the Rohingya is not just a Burma-related problem, but a problem with larger regional implications.

About me:
I have always loved colour, patterns and texture and creating things out of bits and pieces. My Aunt was a seamstress and sent me scraps of her fabrics to use when I was a young girl. I loved getting a bag of scraps and seeing what I could make out of them. Over the years I have tried painting, wood burning, scrapbooking, quilting, sewing and now mosaics. I have been making mosaics for the last 6 years. I am self taught and love reading everything or anything on the subject. I am addicted to Flickr.com and looking through the amazing works I see online. It has encouraged me to try new things and challenged me to think outside the square. I enjoy making something for others and seeing the look of enjoyment when they receive it.

Bio: Born in Spokane, Washington, Brigette spent 36 years of her life in San Diego, California. She realized early that she had an artistic talent, participating in various forms of art and pottery in her youth.
Mosaics entered her life in 1998 and she immediately caught the bug. Although dabbling with them in subsequent years as her children grew through school, it wasn’t until she took some mosaic classes to hone her skills, did she realize that mosaics were her calling.
This soon became an addiction as a plan to mosaic the world!
As a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA), Brigette participated in a community project in Phoenix, AZ for the Southwest Human Development Center in 2007. In 2009 she also participated in the SAMA mosaic marathon. This time it was for the Bayside Community Center in Linda Vista, CA. In 2011 she once again participated in a community project in Ukiah, CA helping on a mural for the Children’s Medical Center representing Mendocino County.
While residing in San Diego, she was the only mobile mosaic artist who taught in the after school programs for the San Diego Unified School District. Currently, Brigette now resides in northern CA among the beauty of the redwoods where she is able to create in a peaceful setting.
Her clientele are generally those looking for the unique piece that reflects who they are. As a result, the client plays an important role in creating the art and may involve themselves to whatever extent they desire. The goal is to make the piece personal and especially functional for the home, office or garden.
Brigette is a mother to 6 children all of which are grown except for her 9 year old son who lives in her home where she and her husband home school him. When not creating or teaching mosaic art, she enjoys spending time with her son and 4 grandchildren when she can see them or on the golf course with her husband.
