Over the past forty years, the Burmese government has systematically stripped over 1 million Rohingya of their citizenship. Recognized as one of the most oppressed ethnic groups in the world, the Rohingya are granted few social, economic and civil rights. They are subjected to forced labor, arbitrary land seizure, religious persecution, extortion, the freedom to travel, and the right to marry. Because of the abuse they endure in Burma, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Burma to seek sanctuary in neighboring Bangladesh. In the refugee camps along the south east coast where they settle, most are not recognized as refugees and are considered illegal economic migrants. Unwanted and unwelcome, they receive little or no humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to exploitation and harassment. In recent years, the Rohingya have paid brokers to smuggle them by boat from Bangladesh to Malaysia and even beyond to Australia, sparking the attention of governments throughout the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has confirmed that the statelessness of the Rohingya is not just a Burma-related problem, but a problem with larger regional implications.

This is a small mosaic for the Doctors Without Borders 2012 Auction, organized by Lin Schorr. We were limited to 6" sq. I used a fused glass tile and embellished it with fused Sunflowers, Dichroic glass leaves, stringers, and one tiny iridescent Dichroic "Scarab". Vitreous tile and bead border on frame.
I went to an art auction in support of Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, and came back home with a wonderful object. It is a fully functioning pinhole camera, supplied with a detailed manual and a roll of Agfa film.

Please keep in mind:
Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...

Statement:
I live in the country and sometimes wonder how hard people must have had it years ago? Communities and people relied on each other just to get by. We sometimes take things for granted because it is all accessible to us everyday. It’s not always so in other countries. Doctors Without Borders (DWB) has helped to close the gap and bring much needed help to people in over 60 countries.
I hope my mosaic, when auctioned, will add some much needed funds so DWB can continue to help people in need.
I also hope that the person, who wins the bid, will feel good every time they look at the mosaic. Just knowing that by doing so they have helped someone and made their life a little bit happier too!

I enjoy working with my hands. Mosaics have opened up a new area of creativity. I love that you can do or use anything when making a mosaic. Best of all are the other mosaic artists. One of the best groups of people I have ever met!

Artist Statement:
Linda describes her work as contemporary folk art. By using a combination of brilliant and reflective colors, she creates mood and movement.
“Much of my work is inspired by nature and Native American, Mexican and African art.”
She especially enjoys the creation of lively, stylized figures, to evoke feelings and emotions from the viewer. “My favorite tessera is eggshell; I love the texture and it allows for the creation of great detail in my pieces.”
In her mixed media pieces, the addition of glass, tile, pebbles, and beads give her mosaics wonderful dimension, texture and depth.
Linda has been creating eggshell mosaics for thirteen years. Her award winning works have been displayed at art shows and galleries in Fulton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady and Schoharie Counties in Upstate New York.

This picture was taken at the Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese with relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within. This boy followed us around and especially my camera :)

During free time here at work, I read a book entitled "What is the What" - it is a novel written by an american author which follows the journey of a Sudanese Boy whose whole life was altered by his native country's 2 decade war - it's such a beautiful read!

This Mother was someone I saw often
- her Young Child had Health Issues but she was taking her to the Clinic.
She has a Skin Disorder.... In this area (N.E. Nicaraguan border area ) (Now RAAN area)
- the Diet was meagre with a marked deficiency in protein and vitamins.
There was a high incidence of Kwashiorkor and other forms of Advanced Malnutrition especially in children under the age of 2 years.
The Main Diseases were respiratory infections, incl. tuberculosis..
.. also intestinal and skin parasites, diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition..
In one village it was easy to hear the sound of whooping cough by the school house.....
(MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, where a 1972 earthquake had destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.The organization, today is known for its quick response in an emergency. )

The Nobel Peace Prize .. Medicins Sans Frontieres.
In 1999, MSF was awarded the International Nobel Peace Prize, "in recognition of the organisation's pioneering humanitarian work on several continents." The award honoured the work of MSF relief workers bringing medical assistance to people in more than 80 countries — over 20 of which are in conflict.
The proceeds from the Nobel Peace Prize have been used by MSF to establish a Neglected Disease Fund. The fund is designed to support pilot projects world-wide that facilitate clinical development, production, procurement and distribution of Neglected Disease treatments.

Most of us live in great countiries, we have jobs, homes, family, friends, past times and life is fairly good. We don't think about where our next meal comes from, where we will sleep, if we will ever see a doctor, if we will go to school, how we will support our famillies. We have organizations that help others, total strangers, those in need. We don't bat an eye.
We live in a country on the map that is well known, we are proud of our heritage, we have national pride. We don't live admid garbage, drinking unsanitary water, live in poorly built shacks, one on top of another. We don't live in a country that is so poor, that poverty is passed from one generation to the next. Yes, we should help ourselves first and if we cannot help ourselves, we need to ask for the help of others.
Haiti lies in destruction, an impoverished country with very little infrastructure, there are orphans that no one wants, poorly built buildings, hardly a doctor, questionable food being resold daily so that women can survive and feed their children. Haiti, a country on the map, that few know about, a country that has fallen to the wayside over the years, and perhaps has been ignored, who knows.
Haiti is on the world map now, take the time to decide what you can do even if it is little, everything helps at this point. Haiti needs help in all areas, I don't have to list it here, the rescue teams are taxed, the mission groups are there, Doctors without Borders, the International Red Cross. I challenge everyone to decide what it is that he or she could do, and do it. I challenge you because the Power of Nature can happen anywhere at anytime, and wouldn't you want to be helped.
Caring and compassion does not go unnoticed, we all need a helping hand some time, Haiti needs us now, how will we respond.
Who has come from Haiti to make a difference in the world today?
Great and gifted people come from every walk of life and every circumstance. Is there someone from Haiti that needs your help, someone who in turn may become a Nobel Prize receipient day, find a cure to a life threatening disease, an engineer, a writer, an inventor, a world renown Chef, designer, someone who escapes a life of poverty and helps others do the same.

The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority from the North Rakhine State in western Burma. Over the past forty years, the Burmese government has systematically stripped over 1 million Rohingya of their citizenship. Recognized as one of the most oppressed ethnic groups in the world, the Rohingya are granted few social, economic and civil rights. They are subjected to forced labor, arbitrary land seizure, religious persecution, extortion, the freedom to travel, and the right to marry. Because of the abuse they endure in Burma, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Burma to seek sanctuary in neighboring Bangladesh. In the refugee camps along the south east coast where they settle, most are not recognized as refugees and are considered illegal economic migrants. Unwanted and unwelcome, they receive little or no humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to exploitation and harassment. In recent years, the Rohingya have paid brokers to smuggle them by boat from Bangladesh to Malaysia and even beyond to Australia, sparking the attention of governments throughout the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has confirmed that the statelessness of the Rohingya is not just a Burma-related problem, but a problem with larger regional implications.

Please keep in mind:
Burma (Myanmar) is ruled by a military junta. In 1990 Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the people and imprisoned for the next 20 years after the election by the military.
In 2010 a election was staged to keep the military leaders in their current positions. People are starving and are forced to work.
All the pictures you may see in my stream are very onesided, as it is prohibited to take pictures of the military and the police. Also I just do not take pictures of poor people on the streets and there are a lot of very poor people in Burma.
The Burmese people are the nicest people I ever met and should be supported, even if I don´t really know how.
The country needs support. I posted some links to some international organizations helping Burma.
Burma is NOT the usual travel destination! Even if I am avoided all governement fees as far as possible (partly in long hours of bus travel) I still can´t say that I am sure travelling the country helps the people or should be boycotted as proposed by some people.
The government just moved the capital to Naypyidaw. When I saw it from the bus passing it, I had tears in my eyes seeing how the "Generals" collect the money building fancy buildings and streets around them with people starving. I was so shocked that I did not even took a picture...

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Kathmandu Valley before noon on April 25. Although the extent of the damages is still unknown, initial reports say houses and buildings collapsed in Kathmandu and surrounding areas.
Tremors were also strongly felt in northern India, in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
