The docks here continue to be an exporter of steel, mainly tinplate from Trostre works near Llanelli. Such trains need covered wagons and loading. However, times change and with the closure of the blast furnaces at Port Talbot virgin steel coils and slabs are now imported from other Tata plants in Europe and India via the docks here and at Portbury (Bristol) and Cardiff.
'Newport Docks is a major hub for steel exports in the UK. In 2022, it handled 1.4 million tonnes of iron and steel products, exporting 955,000 tonnes, which represented 72% of all steel exported from major UK ports. This makes it the leading steel port in the UK and Wales for the seventh consecutive year.'

On the way home from skating practice this evening I grabbed a shot of the Erie Trader (and Clyde) loading at Dock 6. A bonus was a Proctor Roadswitch (likely R922) spotting ore cars on the dock for dumping. A nice calm evening relative to what literally blew through yesterday.
"Space Dock 2017" It's Milky Way season on Cape Cod and despite some recent crummy weather, I managed to squeeze in a few hours of dark sky shooting along Vineyard Sound this week. Some of you may recognize this dock from an image posted previously lit by a full moon. It's also the image on the back of my book. This abandoned dock has lost a lot of its boards over the years but I think it still makes a good subject with this great view of the Milky Way complementing Martha's Vineyard. www.capenightphotography.com
in the foreground is Sugar Beach, a man made faux beach with umbrellas and a view of Toronto Island. And to right a boat dock.

Anderson Dock with the Hardy Gallery. The building is covered with bright, colorful signatures and handprints by families, couples, and everyone in between. The dock is quite popular with couples who have marked important dates in their relationship like a first date or wedding anniversary. See the prvious post for a closeup of the graffiti.
