My best diving shot to date of a young Kingfisher. Iso was at 12800 so I had to work hard on this edit. Had to try and keep the shutter speed slower.
Sony A1 200-600 lens. SS 1600. F6.3.

Grindelwald is a municipality in the district of Interlaken in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The village is located at 1,034 metres (3,390 ft) above sea level in the Bernese Alps.
Unfortunately a bad day to take photos. Dark, rainy and in the forest ...
but we enjoyed the festival very much.

Whilst some parts of the country where hit with heavy rain, I had lots of sunshine until way past 6pm this evening. Both male and female kingfishers were out feeding, mainly in the early morning and late afternoon.
Patience really does pay off - most of my shots had the wings or beak cut off the frame or in many cases, not in the frame at all :-) Some shots had the bird but not the fish!
This photo was taken at 1/8000 of a second, the kingfishers really are quick!

I am always amazed by how deep these terns will go for a fish. This one was totally submerged before popping back up for this shot. Sadly a big crop in almost darkness I was really pushing the camera at ISO 12800. Those last golden rays of sunshine really light up the water.

First one to show up and immediately dive into the jackolantern! Crazy to see them get a nut, go 6 feet away, and nicely bury it for later, and that is what most did! Next year, I might have a nut farm out there!
Pied-billed grebes are often seen floating or diving on Florida’s lakes and ponds. This small pigeon-sized grebe has a short, blunt bill, which is encircled by a black band. These grebes are rarely seen flying, they usually dive and swim underwater when threatened. They feed on small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
Some pied-billed grebes are year-round residents in Florida, and have an extended breeding season. Others migrate to northern states to breed and return to Florida for the winter.
Folk names of this grebe include Dabchick, Devil-diver, Dive-dapper, Hell-diver, and Water Witch.
I found this one along Alligator Alley Trail at Circle B Bar Reserve. Polk County Florida.
Giant diving beetle. These beetles are active in summer and live in ponds or ditches, feeding on other aquatic arthropods. They are nocturnal but sometimes active during the day. Approximately 3.5 cm in length.

This beetle feeds on aquatic insects and creatures, this includes tadpoles. The males use their paddle feet to secure females for mating. They are good flyers and are attracted to artificial lights at night. They are most active at night and can be seen moving from puddles and pools to flooded roads, moving from one water source to the next.
