Our daughter Charlotte has been working on ger dissertation which she finally submitted today. With lockdown however, she had to submit it virtually. Her sister made her a ‘dropbox’ for her to put it in, so we had a bit of a thing in the garden so she could mark the end of her studies. We did have a bottle of champagne in the fridge for her, but she has been saving this can of dark fruits cider especially for this moment!

After 5 months of working on my dissertation, I am finally drafting my conclusion! I am so happy. It is due in three weeks and I feel like I have progressed so much, and so much time and effort has gone into this one piece of work. I still have more to do though, like proofread and I am waiting on feedback on a chapter from my supervisor, so I will probably have a few changes to make to that, and then the same with the conclusion. But, STILL - I am so close to finishing it, and I am really happy with it too, which is amazing considering this time five months ago I was pulling my hair out and saying 'I will never be able to do this, I don't get it'. I can't wait for it to all be finished, put together and printed out. I think it will be my happiest moment to date. I have enjoyed doing it though - weirdly, though it has been really difficult and a huge learning process, but I have learned so much about the topic I have researched (learning disabilities and healthcare inequalities), it is an area that I am really interested in working in, so I am glad I have had the opportunity to delve to deep into the subject matter.

For those who attempt it, the doctoral dissertation can loom on the horizon like Everest, gleaming invitingly as a challenge but often turning into a masochistic exercise once the ascent is begun. The average student takes 8.2 years to get a Ph.D.; in education, that figure surpasses 13 years. Fifty percent of students drop out along the way, with dissertations the major stumbling block. For reference. This is a contemporary street layer, but the basics still apply. I-35 was built on the route of East Avenue, which was a fairly large street in this period. The Mo-Pac follows the RR line (the thick, dark line) to the west. The low-rent area to the east (lower right) is the segregated black area. Oddly, if you compare this to the education map, the area between the UT campus and the capitol is a high education, but moderate rent area -- I'd guess this is sort of a government/university ghetto.

A scan of one of my original photos. I got permission to enter this church and take photos as part of my dissertation project at Uni. It was in a sorry state. This image is taken with the camera placed on the former altar looking through the forest of “temporary” roof structure that was added to make the church useable when the money ran out on the first scheme. Of course, like many temporary measures it became permanent.
After the sentence was read, Adolf (the fat one in the middle) was sent to the Bobst Library High Security Prison where he had to change his stern black suit for a most faaaaabulous purple prison jumpsuit.
Also, I know it's very childish of me, but I do have the biggest one.
My dissertation was titled "Who Watches the Watchmen?". Investigating the increasing demand and popularity in products adapted from graphic novels, and the expanding market for graphic novels.
Exciting stuff.
I incorporated qualities of graphic novels into an effective piece of design. The final item was presented in a protective wallet like a real graphic novel.
My dissertation for a PhD in Aquaculture at Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA), University of Nordland (UiN), Bodø, Norway. Thesis: "Flesh quality and growth characteristics of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in relation to feed, feeding, smolt type and season". Acknowledgements goes to my supervisors; Christel Solberg, Ørjan Hagen and Eldar Å.
