If you want to study what's going on inside a cricket, first freeze it. Then take a straightedge razor and chop its head - this will provide an entry point. I cut open the cricket with a pair of fine iris scissors, and then used four insect pins to hold it in place. This is a glass Petri dish lined with microcrystalline wax. When there are too many pin-holes in it, we put it on a hot plate to melt it and let it re-solidify.
