2023-10-31: An official smiles during the SADC-AfDB-UNHCR Joint Technical Meeting on Forced Displacement, Fragility and Climate Resilience - Day2.
Following 1967 war, Israel annexed East Jerusalem and extended its municipal boundaries incorporating larger parts of the West Bank. Al Nu'man village, east of Beit Sahour, suddenly found itself within the extended Jerusalem municipal boundaries. Overnight the residents of Al Nu'man became “illegal” residents in their own village as the vast majority of them hold West BanK ID and were not given Jerusalem IDs.
The residents have faced a wave of demolitions since then. In 2002, the village of Al Nu'man also started to witness the construction of the Israeli Wall on its lands, which isolates it from the nearby Palestinian communities. There is only one entrance and exit from the village through an Israeli military checkpoint which can only be passed by Palestinians from Al Num'an registered on a list, meaning that the residents from Al Nu'man cannot have visitors from outside the village
Al Shawara Family
Sami Daoud Al Shawawra has three children, one girl aged 4 and two boys aged 6 and I ½ . The family received a demolition order in 2003 on grounds of having built their home without a legal permit. In December 2010, the Israeli authorities came at 5.30am to carry out that order; the Al Shawara family were given 10 minutes only to salvage whatever property they could. The family was still gathering their belongings inside the house when the demolition started.
Since the demolition, the family of five has been forced to live in a tent throughout the winter. They became sick, particularly the youngest child. The mother suffers from depression. The father apart from some livestock, has no gainful employment.
There is no property available to rent in Al Numan, and building outside the village would require a considerable amount of money: “Our right is destroyed..this is inhumane...If I stay like this, I will become crazy. When they destroyed the house, they destroyed our lives. It is miserable, my family tried for days to enter the village but they could not. I need to leave this village and rebuild somewhere.”

Galeria Leme presents the second site-specific commissioned for SITU, curated by Bruno de Almeida, giving continuity to a broader research on ways of thinking and discussing the production of (urban) space through a dialogue between art, architecture and city.
Daniel de Paula’s project brings together numerous rock core samples resulting from geotechnical surveys, which are perforation processes for the exploration and recognition of the subsoil, used in civil engineering to get the necessary geological information required for dimensioning and defining the type of foundations which will be the basis for a construction.
These core samples are composed by layers of rock that were sedimented over millennia, forming a sort of time-line that ranges from the present day to periods prior to human history. For the installation the artist organizes them chronologically according to their geological age, arranging them in this order on the outdoor patio of the gallery.
The artist collects samples from drillings carried out for public works of urban mobility on the State of São Paulo, such as the Subway and the Rodoanel (Greater São Paulo's Beltway), among others. These major axes of displacement are true vectors of urban structuring, inducers of an exponential territorial expansion and determining factors for the formation of land prices and the arrangements of land use in cities.
By turning the external space of the gallery into a meeting point of these rocky core samples, gathered from various parts of São Paulo’s metropolitan region, the artist contrasts the geological time of the gradual formation of the earth's crust, to the time of construction and expansion of cities. Conjoining two divergent perceptions of soil, one guided by its symbolic value and another instituted by the negotiation and exchange value.

5 July 2017. Lankien: Duor Jany (11), seriously affected with cholera, lays on a bed on July 5, 2017, at the clinic run by Doctors Withouth Borders (MSF) in Lankien, Jonglei, South Sudan. The cholera outbreak in the region has reached a moderate increase for the past weeks.
Fighting between Government and opposition forces last April pushed thousands of civilians to displace to Padding and Lankien, both still under opposition control. The massive displacement, that duplicated the population, brought an outbreak of cholera and a serious need of health assistance, drinking water and food distribution among the population, according to the local leaders.

2 August 2016. Wau: A newly displaced woman digs on the ground to build her shelter at the UN Protection of Civilians (PoC) site in Wau, South Sudan, on August 2, 2016. Most of the new displaced population in the PoC, which already reached 20,000, complain about the lack of food and water and don't have good shelters to face the rainy season.
In total, more than 83,000 people are estimated to be displaced in the areas in and around Wau town following intense fighting in late June and ongoing skirmished and attacks in July.

The Bwasare IDP settlement (in Gasorwe commune, Muyinga province) was set up by the local administrator in 1998 to settle ethnic Tutsi and Batwa closer to their place of origin. These IDPs had fled five years earlier to various locations in the province. About 550 people currently live in the settlement, which is close to a communal centre and a main road. Most of the inhabitants are able to farm the land from which they were displaced.

The Marmion Royal Tenants Union, NELA Alliance, Elena Popp of Eviction Defense Network, and community members rallied at the doors of Councilman Gil Cedillo - chair of the city's Housing Committee, bought and paid for by large real estate developers, and unconcerned about no-fault evictions. Cedillo's district director Conrado Terazas said, "There is nothing the city can do to stop the eviction of Marmion Royal tenants", which was a lie. The councilman has stopped all Rent Stabilization Ordinance motions dead in his committee for over a year - some of which would limit or end these no-fault evictions. The crowd chanted "¡Chale con Cedillo!" (Get rid of Cedillo) and several other slogans before proceeding to a testimonial rally beside the Highland Park Gold Line station.
Displacement ventilation is an air distribution system that circulates air through diffusers located near the floor level and displaces, or moves, the existing air into return ducts near the ceiling.

Mom and I headed out to get to Aurora, IL...moving into college the next day. We crashed at the same hotel we did last time...bad idea. I went out into the hallway and talked on the phone with Garry and just began to sob. My monthly started causing hormones to pump through my body making me super emotional in an emotional time. Yay hormones.
The last time I was in that hotel I wasn't sure if I wanted to be at Aurora. I knew that in a few days I could go home and be with Garry...and the realization that I wouldn't be having that this time was crushing. I was terrified and dreading the next day.
So, hotel, keep those memories as I move on.
TRF: I am no longer in EST but now Central time! Woo! One hour closer to Garry :)

For social housing & against pipelines: Unite struggles against displacement!
Social Housing Alliance Nat’l Day of Action for Housing statement in unity with Burnaby Mountain defenders
This fight against the destructive resource extraction economy is also a fight against displacement and housing shortages across BC. Today pipelines and other resource mega-projects are causing displacement in Indigenous and working class communities, from Burnaby to Kitimat, where pipeline construction pressures have brought a 0% vacancy rate and mass evictions and rent increases. Social Housing Alliance stands with the resistance at Burnaby Mountain to say NO to ongoing displacement for corporate profits held up by the colonial Canadian state.
Burnaby Mountain is not Canada’s “public” land
On November 14th Supreme Court of Canada granted an injunction in favor of Kinder Morgan, allowing police to forcibly remove protesters so that the company can begin its drilling work. But Canadian courts do not have legal jurisdiction on unceded Coast Salish territories. Burnaby Mountain is not public land for the Canadian state to offer to a U.S. company for resource extraction. It is Indigenous land caught in an ongoing cycle of dispossession.
On top of destroying Indigenous economies and ways of being, short sighted resource economies make lives worse for Indigenous and working class people around the province. Local economies are upended, housing costs increase, sexual and gender violence against Indigenous women spikes, and more pressure is put on low-income residents, all for temporary jobs.
We say stop displacement! They say cut taxes!
Though the government claims that resource extraction projects can fund social housing and social services, this same government is providing tax exemptions for resource extraction companies while keeping taxes low for all corporations. Taxes have never been so low. Today the BC government is subsidizing corporate profits while aggressively defunding social housing. In the next ten years, over 30,000 affordable housing units will lose their funding in BC.
Social housing and social programs are not starved because of a lack of wealth in British Columbia. Tax cuts and government austerity are the product of the very corporations and government that bring us pipelines as a temporary salve to economic crisis.
Corporations and colonial governments are united in their drive to colonize the land and prioritize profits over social well-being. In response, housing and environmental justice movements are standing united in resistance against displacement and dispossession. Let’s together stop Kinder Morgan in their tracks!
