2 July 2017. Padding: Nyachiang Dual (25) recovers from a suspected cholera infection in a relative house in Padding, Jonglei, South Sudan, on July 2, 2017.

Fighting between Government and opposition forces last April in several villages in Jonglei pushed thousands of civilians to be displaced in Padding and Lankien, both still under opposition control. The massive displacement, that duplicated the population, brought an outbreak of cholera and a serious need of health assistance, drinking water and food distribution among the population, according to the local leaders.

A displacement camp in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. A number of Kyrgyz families evacuated to the camp from Kuzul Kushtak, where the majority of the population is ethnic Uzbek. Southern Kyrgyzstan has experienced escalating violence between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek populations since the government in Bishkek was overthrown on 7 April and an interim government took power. The Government of Uzbekistan has reported that more than 75,000 refugees have fled into Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan in the last week..

.

A Save the Children team is on the ground in Kyrgyzstan, assessing the needs of families affected in and around the city of Osh. We've distributed vital aid such as hygiene kits to children and families affected by the violence and we will work to provide health services, run activities to keep children safe.

On the right side of this photo, I use our equation Δx = x-x˳ to find the displacement of a trip from Norman, Okla to Davis, Okla using their mileposts on I-35 as guides. This is a displacement of -53 miles.

Our return trip is in the other direction, so it is +53 miles.

An important point of this map is that 108 and 55 (the positions of Norman and Davis) only have meaning with respect to a reference point. That reference point is ARBITRARY.

Oklahoma calls mile zero its boarder with Texas along the Red River. So Davis is 55 miles north of that and Norman is 108 miles north of that.

Texas would not like this reference frame, because it would make all Texas mile markers negative. So they pick a different reference frame- they call the boarder with Mexico mile zero. We could renumber all the Oklahoma miles by simply adding the total Texas miles to the Oklahoma numbers.

If we do this, as I did on the left, and then travel from Norman to Davis, I still displace -53 miles. Going back north I still displace 53 miles.

Of course I do! Towns don't get up and move because I chose to measure them differently. Once again, the laws of physics and measuring motion get us displacement. To decide on position, we need a reference point that we measure from. Apparently, this reference point is arbitrary. You pick a convenient one for you. We did this in our first lab by calling the starting line zero meters. The only rule is that once you pick a reference point, you need to stick with it throughout the problem.

Another thing worth noting is at the far right. My displacement for a round trip between the two cities (regardless of reference frame is -53 mi + 53 mi = 0.

Since direction matters for displacement, and in a round trip you finish where you started, displacement for such a trip always adds to zero.

Clearly, another number is important, though. After driving this trip, you are tired. You spent gas and there's wear and tear on your car. So if you add up the absolute value of displacement, you get what's called distance. For this round trip, the distance is |Δx| = |-53| + |53| = 106mi

18 March 2014. Saraf Omra: (Left to right) Adruba Adam and her granddaughter Bishra Abdala, both from Al Madaris, near Saraf Omra, North Darfur, are pictured in their shelter of the new settlement for displaced people in the vicinity of the UNAMID base.

In the aftermath of a conflict that erupted on 7 March between the Gimir and Abbala tribes, an estimated 55,000 people from Saraf Omra and neighbouring villages were displaced. Many sought refuge in the vicinity of the UNAMID base in the town, while others moved to villages in Central and West Darfur.

The feuding communities signed a cessation-of-hostilities agreement on 12 March. Post this development, the situation has stabilized and the majority have returned to their homes. However, a few thousand are still displaced.

Philadelphia

Development in Philly is out of control, worsening conditions for working class people & the environment. Hundreds of community activists took to the streets to set the tone for Philly's 2023 election: anyone running for mayor or city council better have policy solutions for ensuring long-term, working class residents have a place in this city and that Philly is truly tackling and prepared for the climate crisis.

The march was organized by community groups fighting for land justice across our city, including Philly Thrive, Sunrise Movement, VietLead, Save UCTownhomes, Save the Meadows, Cobbs Creek EJ, and more!

The Fireflite was introduced in 1955 as De Soto's top trim package of the DeSoto Firedome. It was wider and longer than the Firedome and it came equipped with a hemispherical cylinder head, 291 cubic inch displacement (4.8L) V8 engine producing 200 hp when equipped with the 4 barrel carburetor (149 kW) and PowerFlite automatic transmission. The transmission was operated by a Flite-Control lever located on the dashboard. The car weighed 4,070 lb (1850 kg) and cost US$3,544 ($40,309 in 2023 dollars ).

The 1956 model car was best known for its long, tapering tail fins, often accentuated by a two-tone exterior finish. The interior offered bench seating that could accommodate six passengers. The Fireflite had a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration time of 11 seconds and a top speed of 110 mph (175 km/h).

The 1956 Fireflite had a longer stroke, 3.80 inches, giving a 330 cubic inch displacement (5.4L). Compression ratio increased to 8.5:1 and power increased to 230 hp (172 kW). It made up 27.39% of DeSoto's sales in 1956. Power seats were $70, while power brakes cost $40.

From the Spanish explorer, to the blue highway wanderer from 1955 named after him. Virgil Exner a designer at Chrysler, used the long sweeping lines, innovative use of chrome, and interior surfaces to die for, to create this design that was way ahead of its time, and gave the Tri Fives a real run for their money. Due to his work, born was the term “The Big Three” as his work kept Chrysler on the map.

Conflict-induced population displacement, both internally within the DRC and refugee flows from neighbouring countries, has had a considerable negative environmental impact. Several major waves of population displacement have occurred since the mid-1990s, with many groups being displaced multiple times. Despite the formal end of the Second Congo War (1998-2002) with the signing of peace agreements between the DRC, Rwanda, Uganda and warring groups in 2002, more than 2.4 million people have been displaced from their homes since then, mainly in eastern DRC. More recently in 2009, fighting in western DRC has caused over 110,000 people to flee into the neighbouring Republic of Congo.

Displacement along a Small Fault at Pillar Point. This small, unnamed fault along Maverick's Beach at Pillar Point is parallel to, and about 500 yards west of, the much larger San Gregorio Fault. It is one of many thousands of small right-lateral-slip faults that are part of the San Andreas system. The fault plane, seen here in the Purisima Formation, is roughly perpendicular to the line of sight. The movement along the fault is primarily horizontal with a small component of vertical displacement. Note the seep where the fault intersects the beach at the base of Pillar Point Bluff, caused by the greater porosity in the fractured rock along the fault plane. Pillar Point. This photograph shows the effects of ground displacement caused by movement of the 'San Andreas' fault.....a "master" fault of an intricate fault network that cuts through rocks of the California coastal region. The entire San Andreas fault system is more than 800 miles long and extends to depths of at least 10 miles within the Earth. This photo was taken at an old abandoned military structure called 'Battery Mendel', that was built as a coastal fortification along the shore of the Marin Headlands, only a few miles east of the fault line.

The Marin Headlands is the site of a number of historic military settlements fortifications, including Fort Cronkhite, Fort Barry, a large number of bunkers and batteries, and the SF-88 Nike Missile silo. From the 1890s, the first military installations were built to prevent hostile ships from entering San Francisco Bay. The batteries here at Fort Barry are examples of fortifications from the pre-World War I period.

Battery Mendell, constructed in 1902, was the first of the batteries built at Fort Barry. An M1895A4 12-inch breech loading rifle was once mounted on a disappearing carriage in the now-grassy semicircular area you see in this photograph. The rifle remained there until 1943 when, after the threat of imminent invasion had passed, it was removed and scrapped. For decades after, the battery fell into disrepair and was a target for vandals and taggers. Today, thanks to the National Park Service, portions of it are being repaired and restored.

3 April 2014. El Fasher: A group of displaced women and children are pictured in their new settlement in Zam Zam camp for Internally Displaced People (IDP), North Darfur. According to the community leaders and the International Organization for Migration, for the last two weeks more than 7,000 people have settled in this new area in Zam Zam IDP camp, coming from their own villages between the outskirts of El Fasher and Korma.

According to OCHA, a new wave of violence across all Darfur has forced an estimated 200,000 people to flee their homes since the beginning of this year.

September 2009, Medina Khaiwan, Yemen. The ICRC and the Yemen Red Crescent distribute relief goods to displaced people.

All too often, the authorities are unable or unwilling to meet their obligations to protect and assist IDPs. When this happens, humanitarian organizations have a role to play in ensuring the survival of the displaced people.

National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are well placed to help IDPs, because they have their roots in communities, mostly cover an entire national territory, and have privileged access to the authorities. In many instances, National Societies from other countries also contribute to Movement's response, focusing on providing direct services and material aid.
