POLITYKA:
Ta muzyka pokazuje, jak owocne może być spotkanie dwóch wrażliwych, otwartych, choć na pozór odmiennych od siebie osób. Obydwaj - Holender Michel Banabila i ukrywający się pod pseudoniemem „Zenial" Polak Łukasz Szałankiewicz - upodobali sobie muzyczne dialogi w obrębie eksperymentalnej muzyki elektronicznej.
Zenial uczynił z tego bodaj swą główną metodę twórczą. Od lat współpracuje z wieloma artystami - nie tylko dźwiękowymi - z różnych krajów i generacji. I jak pokazują dokumentacje płytowe oraz koncerty, nieźle na tym wychodzi: wzbogaca swój i tak wyraźny - mroczny, abstrakcyjny, a jednak bogaty w nastroje - styl, nadaje muzyce energii i dramaturgii. Sytuacja nierzadko w dużej mierze improwizowanego spotkania wyostrza zmysły, rodzi czujność, wysubtelnia muzykę - prowokuje wyważenie środków. Dziesięć lat w postawie nie zasypującego gruszek w popiele eksperymentatora, poszukiwacza ciekawych dźwięków sprawiło, że właśnie teraz, koło trzydziestki, jego muzyka zyskuje smaczną dojrzałość.
Dobrze widać to w zestawieniu z koncepcją muzyki Banabili, o wiele bardziej gładkiej, melodyjnej, ilustracyjnej. W kompozycji z takim partnerem Zenialowe mroki, hałasy i niepokoje nabrały nowych, bardziej złożonych, a zarazem mniej oczywistych wymiarów. Paleta brzmień i kolorów poszerzyła się nie tylko o szarawe, ale też o zupełnie jasne nastroje, jak choćby w utworach „Twardowski", czy „Oh No Uaredaro!". Szałankiewicz odkrywa ich niepokojące, drugie oblicze. Piszę „Szałankiewicz", bo to jego muzyczny świat tu dominuje. Bez Banabili jednak nie przekroczyłby własnych ograniczeń.
Nie grozi nam nuda, muzykę niesie żrące napięcie, dobrze rozplanowana, działająca na wyobraźnię dramaturgia, jak w najlepszych filmach Hitchcocka. Czasami dostajemy chwilę, by odsapnąć, lecz zaraz znów chwyta nas za gardło psychotyczna aura. Suspens przychodzi na sam koniec: płyta kulminuje, napięcie narasta, zagęszcza się, różnicuje, i gdy staje się nieznośne, muzyka urywa się. To jak jazda nocą w „Zagubionej autostradzie": niby nie ma ostrych zakrętów, ale są strachy i zagadki. I bar z pizzą po lewej.
Muzycy dobrze brzmią w tym symbiotycznym zestawieniu, a wybrane przez nich pole analogowej elektroniki to trafny wybór, bo rosną tu kwiatki o cokolwiek nieoczywistych kolorach i można z nich - jak widać - skomponować całkiem niebagatelny bukiecik. (Joanna Wojdas)

This album contains a selection of Spanish secular music from the baroque period. The ensemble is small and intimate with Montserrat Figueras, soprano, together with a fine quartet of musicians: Ton Koopman on harpsichord, Hopkinson Smith on guitar and theorbo, Christophe Coin, on viol, and, of course, Jordi Savall on viol as well.. "Lou Rawls Live" was recorded in front of a 'live' studio audience in 1966. A then 33-year-old singer, Lou Rawls belts out AND croons with a smooth baritone, a story-telling cadence, and a firm, bluesy command. There's his Hollywood-smooth "Shadow of Your Smile, a smirky "Girl from Ipanema," a jazzy "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good" ("that's Duke Ellington, folks"), and a gritty-as-gneiss "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water." And, in his extended spoken monologue, "Street Corner Hustler's Blues," Mr. Rawls out-beats the beats, daddy-o. The studio quartet is tight and crisp: among the group, the great Herb Ellis is on guitar. It's my bad that I had never before heard 'Lou Rawls Live!' Thanks to a thrift store, that's no more my loss.

"It was a night to remember. The handsome young star was a big-time success on records and in personal appearances. He had been called by one critic, 'the greatest soul-jazz singer of the '60s;' by another, 'the entertainer with the finest phrasing since Sinatra;' by still another 'a bluesman who carries on the traditions of Nat Cole and Ray Charles.' And, as Low Rawls spontaneously demonstrated on this night, he is all this and more. He is an artist whose deep-moving performances take the audience with him wherever he goes ...from the bittersweet rhythms of his famous 'Tobacco Road' to the hauntingly romantic melodies of his eloquent 'The Shadow of Your Smile.'
The assembled audience was the challenging kind singers dream of. These were fellow jazz musicians, recording engineers, people 'in the business,' their wives and friends. They are hard to impress but when they are impressed, a performance becomes an event. And that's exactly what happened. Low Rawls' first session before a 'live' audience was an event long to be remembered by everyone there.
As the slim, tastefully-dressed figure stepped to the mike, Lou's group took up their instruments: James Bond, bass; Earl Palmer, drums; Tommy Strode, piano, piano; Herb Ellis, guitar. Their contributions from first set to last were to prove just what great backing is and what it means to a star.
But it was Lou Rawl's night all the way. He rocked the room with his big-beat rendering of those 'Going to Chicago Blues.' He edged his soulful blues with sadness (listen to St.James Infirmary'). And he chortled right through 'World of Trouble' happily he had the audience stomping for more.
That's how things developed through set after set on that memorable night ...a mutual love affair between the gifted young star and the audience who came to hear him. During an intermission, Lou is quoted as saying: 'I try to build my repertoire so it will complement the atmosphere. I'm trying to reach everyone, young and old alike.' He need have no doubts. The sensational LOU RAWLS LIVE! does just that!"
