Wrinkled and browning plantings turn yellow and die in the last warm days before winter. The late afternoon light really gives it an autumn feel, too.The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. New York Botanical Gardens, The Bronx, NYC -- October 16, 2016
The Little Witch returned from an errand to find her kitchen in a state of disarray. She is happy to see a mantle surrounding her fireplace and wooden flooring going down, but it is quite a mess with chunks of dried glue all about, an enormous bottle of glue holding down some stubborn planks, and a rather ominous looking cutting tool on the floor. She wonders if it supposed to look like that?!
Progress this week:
1. Reattached the wall to the floor (it detached over this year in storage) and repainted some damaged areas
2. Finally attached the window and door to the wall
3. Added a mantle and hearth
4. Distressed the brick fireplace interior a bit
5. Started wood flooring
I should have done the floor before the mantle, but I was not sure I would do anything with the floor other than paint it or maybe do egg carton bricks. Last night I decided to go ahead and uses these remnant flooring pieces I had laying around.

"The Fifth Season " René Magritte, 1943 ; Oil on Canvas
Art Movement : Surrealism
Magritte Museum - Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
The painting presents two bowler-hatted artists crossing paths,or is it the same artist coming and going at the same time ...?
"All that I desire is to be enriched by intensely exciting new thoughts." René Magritte
The Fifth Season offers a new understanding of Magritte’s special position in the history of 20th-century art.His Art challenges the observer's perceptions of reality.Everything that is visible hides something that is invisible. When we look at a painting,we wonder about what is imagined and what is real.Is it about the reality of appearances or the appearance of reality? The painter himself gave the best answer :
"What’s genuinely real, there’s only a certain time when we get that feeling. And that’s what I try to express with my paintings."
René Magritte
The Belgian Surrealist René Magritte (1898–1967) was one of the most intriguing painters associated with the iconic Surrealist style. He balanced philosophy and fantasy to illuminate the gaps between what we see and what we know. His artful paradoxes reawaken age-old questions about what the senses apprehend,
what awareness and reflection contribute, and how we know. How do we understand and experience reality? How can painting help us contend with the ambiguities that surround us? Can art reflect these uncertain relationships in the world? Magritte’s work opened up these questions and many more that are still being examined. He playfully explored new styles, but his painting remained consistent in its cautionary message not to equate the observable world with the paradoxes within reality.
- For the Art Lovers -The painting next to "The Fifth Season" is :
"Flame" René Magritte, 1943 - Oil on Canvas, Surrealism
Beautiful painting! What connotations does "Flame" have for you? Any optimistic interpretations ? Alas.To me,Flame in a densely treed area reminds me of wildfires and the vicious circle that climate change worsens fires and fires worsen climate change.

Most Art in our current moment stands to address Climate Change in order to resonate deeply in our collective consciousness.Earth is changing face,we are under constant pressure of imminent disaster as our world is plagued by extended periods of climate disarray. It feels as if we should be prepared for "The Fifth Season ....
"I think we are responsible for the universe, but that doesn't mean we decide anything." Rene Magritte
This is not my typical subject matter, but I was fascinated and saddened that no sooner had our cherry tree burst into bloom than the beautiful blossoms began to drop. Wish I could hold onto Spring for as long as our Winter lasted!
A favorite book of mine has always been John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley: In Search of America. Perhaps, because of Steinbeck’s yearning for wanderlust in his early 50’s, the same time I realized how much I wanted to experience the beauty, meet the people and hear the stories of this amazing land we call home. When I think of Bannack Montana, I am reminded of the words from those pages “A journey is a person itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us”
When you visit Bannack, the old mining town, you immediately find the true meaning of these words and that of the “wild west”, when law and order seemed to be nonexistent. This well preserved town now sits empty, consumed only by the ghosts of days gone by.
On an earlier visit, a few years ago, to this location, I was cautioned that the current “residents” still run this town. On that stop I encountered a spirit in the Bannack Hotel Meade. He made his presence quite clear to me with cold drafts, the smell of sulfur, malfunctioning my camera, draining its batteries and sending me racing down the stairs and out of building faster than I had moved in quite some time! Following this confrontation, I became a bit terrified of the unknown, but intrigued and wanting to face my fears, I returned for a second visit. This time with a plan to spend the night.
I arrived early in the afternoon on a beautiful day and was a little relieved to find a park ranger ready to accompany a group of school kids on a tour of the town. I walked though photographing these amazing old structures trying to stay ahead of the visitors. I listened to my footsteps echoing through the spring air as I walked the old wooden boardwalk towards that dreaded Hotel to face my fear. Now standing at the front door, I found my hand shaking a bit as I turned the knob to gain access (to what seemed in my mind) to hell.
Once inside this grand old hotel, I started my ascent on the creaking old stairs, ever so cautiously, to the scene of my last meeting with “Mr. Not So Nice”. Once upstairs I rounded the corner to that long hallway where all the doors were open allowing the light to pour onto the floor, except the one door at the end of the hallway, which was shut tight, and the reason, on my first visit, I let my curiosity get the best of me. I had to know what was behind that door. Again in almost the same spot, came the cold draft, then the smell of sulfur. My heart racing, paralyzed for the moment, a couple of kids came running up the stairs and as quickly as Casper’s not so friendly cousin came, he was gone. No cold draft, no foul smell. Breathing a huge sigh of relief, I regained my composure as nothing had happened and greeted the kids. Bravely, I walked to the end of the hallway to find that the door nailed shut, simply lead to the old second story porch on the front of the hotel.
After spending a couple of more hours photographing this “ghost town”, I headed several hundred yards to the river to set up camp. Carefully preparing my accommodations for the evening, saying hello to the only other campers at the grounds, an older couple in a huge RV, I started a fire to cook my gourmet cuisine of beans and franks. After filling my belly, I noticed the sun making its way to the Montana horizon and grabbed my gear to photograph this amazing light casting upon the plains.
Climbing the grassy hill leading to town, I once again was feeling a little pensive, after realizing I was the lone breathing person in a town abandoned and now taking on a whole new vibe. Setting up my camera I turned my attention to the beautiful light and began to photograph this place ripped from the pages of history. As I made my way towards the end of town snapping the shutter of my camera, I found myself frequently looking over my shoulder expecting to see someone there. Shaking off this feeling each time, I went back to the task at hand.
I reached the end of the town, which was only about two to three blocks long, I turned and headed back to photograph the now even more dramatic light making its last attempt to spread its hues of gold and reach across the land before retiring for the evening. I began my quest to capture this new, ever changing light and shadows drawn from the old buildings, and it was then I realized that not only had the light changed but so had everything else! There WAS someone else in that town, but how, but who, could have possibly opened almost every door in town!! All the doors, that on my short journey to the end of town were closed tightly, were now all WIDE OPEN! Frozen in fear, trying to rationalize this happening, I struggled to peruse my original goal of photographing this light, when a wind from the west whisked though the streets, overwhelming me in panic. “What in the world was happening”? Did they expect me to go in one of those doors, only to have them slam shut, locking me in wild west hell for eternity? I think not. That is when I picked up my backpack, my tripod and ran (and I mean full on marathon running) back to my campsite where I pulled up the stakes on my tent, threw my gear in disarray in the trunk of my car and left nothing but the dust in my path behind me.
My journal entry from that evening was titled “A Change of Plans” and boy was it ever! I was now able to breath comfortably, as I found myself nestled in to an extremely busy KOA Campground next to 15 Texas A&M students who were enjoying their night with cold beers around a campfire swapping stories and laughter. I am usually the one who seeks out quiet, remote camping quarters, but this evening, the sounds of people, real, living humans, was such glorious music to my ears!
Now, because I am truly suffering from a bruised and batter ego over this event, I am sure that this is not the last time there will be an entry in my journal in regards to Bannack Montana. But I AM sure, that it will take a couple more years at least to rebuild the courage so injured in defeat, when I can finally make the photographs I have hoped for, documenting this forgotten town in the middle of nowhere, under the evening stars. So until that time, I will continue on my journeys in hopes that I will maintain some sort of control over the adventures rather than them directing me, but that remains to be seen.

Located on Loch Leven in Glencoe close to the Ballachulish Church that also has many MacInneses in its graveyard, this is the burial isle for the Stewarts of Ballachulish & Ardsheal, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, the Camerons of Callart, the Appin Stewarts as well as others from the Glencoe area. It is said that Alasdair MacDonald (MacIain of Glencoe) was buried here after the Glencoe massacre of 1692. The Glencoe Center is not far away which has highlights of this famous massacre.
The island is only accessible by boat. Some of the island is cared for, but many of the burial sites have fallen into disarray. Every year a volunteer group of people of MacInnes and MacDonald come to the island and clean as much of the overgrowth as they can. One of the Clan MacInnes officers has family buried on the island, and participates in this clean up.
Many of the stones and slabs are made of slate and come from the Ballachulish Slate Quarry. Some of these stones are extremely large, considering that they must be hand carried in boats and taken up some difficult terrain.
You will see the name both Munda or Munde. Eilean means island. Eilean Munde was named after St. Fintan Mundus of Argyle, an Irish disciple of St. Columba. St. Columba established the other well-known MacInnes burial site, Kiel Church. St. Mundus came from Iona in the 7th century and established several abbeys, including one on the island which is now in ruins. The church had burned in 1495 but rebuilt. The last service was in July of 1693. St. Mundus died in 962.
Fintan Munnu (Mundus appears to be Latinized) was of the Ui-Neill clan in Ireland and trained as a monk. His birth year is unknown, but he died in 635AD. He studied at Bangor and at Cluain-Innis. As a young monk, he arrived on Iona shortly after Columba died and was sent back to Ireland to found his own monastery as its Abbot. He arrived in Alba in about 600AD and founded several churches. His final parish was on Eilean Nam Munde (Isle of the Teacher) which later became known as Eilean Nam Mairbh (Isle of the Dead). The Irish Gaelic word munnu means “to learn” or “to teach”.
It is rumored that the island is guarded (or haunted?) by the spirit of the last person buried there who cannot enter Paradise until the next is buried.

This grand stair has seen the elevation and diminishment of strong climbers on the direct ascent that may become less steady and not so sure footed on their somewhat dizzying descent depending on their sociable reception of reverence, revelry and their aptitude for rambunctiousness. All that is sheer supposition of the progression of historical heights achieved and also of the downward floundering disarray of degradation in regression. All of this was swimming around my unsure head as my hips, knees and ankles offered to give way. The four broken toes were not to be considered as I tried to do this stair and the well within and without some justice in my pictures.
This stair is in Auchinleck House in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It will have seen and supported Dr. Samuel Johnson and James Boswell whilst about their ways to publishing, “A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland,” also, “The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides.” Dr. Samuel Johnson having risen to fame as The Man Of Letters of his age with critical acclaim and his outstanding lexicography work that would assure him a place in the Black Adder Pantheon of historical characters of true merit in the absolute finest of humours, “A Dictionary of the English Language. 1755, 1773.”
Blackadder, Ink and Incapability, Dr. Johnson being played perplexed over Sausage by Robbie Coltrane, Episode aired Sep 24, 1987, written by Richard Curtis, Ben Elton.
I happen to believe that I have failed in both pictures here produced together,
A staircase, no a challenge accepted and an achievement attempted
A stairwell staring back and questioning, “How you can picture it?”
I need to return and with crushed toes try much harder to achieve a result worthy of the Stair and of the Well both Inner and Outer.

The EMC 7243 was the last diesel engine shipped by the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Company. That was in October, 1956. It remained in service until 1996 when it was donated to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. It's sad to see it in such disarray, but, since it's in the possession of the LSRM, there's hope it will be returned to it's former glory.

I couldn't make up my mind, decide, or just choose...1. :\
Why! Why! I don't want, I don't wanna.
The only bad part about flying is having to come back down to the fucking world and yet... still I float.
At the time of Cardinal Wolsey's fall from favour in 1529, only the Great Hall was fully completed but its approaches were in a state of disarray and the staircase hall remained roofless until this wonderful fan-vault, with it's single central pillar was built in 1636, or thereabouts (there is some confusion over the exact year). It is thought it may be from an original design intended by Wolsey but now lost.
The present staircase itself (out of shot) wasn't built until 1801 and the tower that rises above not until the 1870's.
we all live our lives dangerously
in a state of jeopody
at the edge of calamity
you have discovered that the veil
that separates your ordered life from disarray is wafer thin
this is the ordinary truth of existance
from which none of of are exempt
in time we all find out we are not in control
we never were
we never will be

Exploring inside the old barn…scary! I found a large fox/coyote hole and some bones among the disarray and ruins. But standing there, the memories of my childhood standing in our barn came flooding back and just for an instant it felt as if I were there.

Blue is the sound of the
music in my heart.
As the guitar lets out the sounds
that rip the heavens apart.
The disarray of the beats,
match the thoughts in my mind
as the chords become art.
A picture flows from the
soul to start.
As every stroke becomes
a beat from the heart.
Blue is beautiful but tears
my thoughts apart.
When having a feeling affects
the rhythms of the heart.
I can not help but pour
my soul into my art.

UNTIL WE GET THE ENDING RIGHT AT LAST
As tender as Springtime first grown sprouts of greenest grass
as gentle as the new-born lambs that made us laugh
galloping across the meadows of wildflowers' historic past
this love you gave to me I thought would last
but no-one sees the future or where to follow
along the path so straight, but ever-narrow and often hollow
or part at crossroads in misdirection
and misinterpretation of the pointing arrow
from Cupid's bow we know full well
it doesn't always hit it's mark exactly if at all
but may land on blurred and vaguest outskirts
just outside our plans and fall
where the earth may be fertile or be fallow
or seperated by the highest wall
the wild deer's instincts are to gather together
like posies of velvet soft ivy with dogged edges
hidden beneath the sumptuous hedges
the buckwheat dries in shallow furrows
ploughed by the farmer and reflected in his brow
that may never see tomorrow
the lines so uniform underneath which his darkened eyes
like pools of blackened soil where stubble burning
leaves it's marks until it can recover
this love of ours that once discovered
deep desirous needs within each other;
that could complete us
yet leaves us weary now; so worn; so tired; defeated
frayed edges of ropes that bound you to me
disarrayed; dismayed atop the ledge of hope
that once you see
how deep the cut of separation feels;
you'll know and understand this need in me
and how the roughened coir that once was
smooth as velveteen soft-fingered
ribbons twirling through the tendrils of our hair
that in the winds of all the seasons
that stretched out wide and far before us
who could tell where you ceased to be and I began
so closely knit and woven; souls and hearts in unison
I heard my own and yours as one
and when yours skipped a beat
I picked up the slackened rhythm lost and found
within the sound of ever-loving new beginnings
everlasting thoughts and machinations of our minds
no need to speak or write our story down
it was our choice to live the lives we'd chosen for ourselves
in silent unknown sojourn we rejoiced
and didn't heed the words of anybody else
wrapped within the hidden sacred womb so safe from harm
our little world seemed big enough for us; so calm
but like a bubble silently rises high above the mountains
with no knowledge of it's fragile vulnerability
a poisoned arrow sprang from nowhere
and beat us way back down
we crashed to earth and were dispersed
before we hit the ground
were scattered like the biblical seeds;
some falling hard on stony ground
that harvested our organs
like greedy gorging snuffling hounds
once hunted foxes near to extinction
in England's green and pleasant lands
we survived and bound our wounds
with discontent; disparagement
and coldly battened down our hatches from ensuing storms
which led and let the pouring rain;
cold and treacherous muddied waters
flow through our veins with venom and with spite
to hide the fact that we had bled out
all the goodness we once felt
and looking back we cast an eye into the distance
and what can you see that I haven't already thought about
that crossroads had four roads leading us away and to us
but I chose one and so did you, so what would happen
if we retraced our steps one day
and took the other two just to see where we would end up
and maybe there might be a roundabout or one way street
where two lovers such as us were destined still to meet
and warmly take each other in our loving arms
to live once more within the sanctuary of a love which balms
and entwines our lives and loving hearts within
a different future where our promised happy ending
is built to last and no amount of arrows slung
can pierce the inner sanctum built therein
that houses love so pure and generous,
that no-one wishing ill intent
can penetrate or cause such discontent
that once we felt was destiny
but now we know that there can be
many different endings to our story
if we are brave enough to risk the journey
back into the distance of our past
and live and die and live again all over
until we get the ending right at last.

a circle
sometimes more earthy than other times
with cranes trapped screeching inside your neck
centipedes carving galleries in discarded embraces
Achilles grinning tingled by the sharp tip of an arrow
so spent
litanies gone by with nothing to show
except the dirt from your hands,
and the upset frown of rocks, disarrayed
shambled
and then
it emerges, steady, tall
gentle sway in a safe hull
floating smoothly on turbulent streams
perfect stillness amidst entropy
drop of rain above the sweltering ground

MM 4 October 2021: A Starr is Born
Macro Mondays theme: Star
Starr is the last of a series of Petite Blythe dolls created by Hasbro to go with their popular series of Littlest Pet Shop plastic animals. The star in her eye is the reason for her name. I currently own 31 of these (3 with stars) and 26 of the Takara Petite Blythes produced in Japan. Feel free to stop reading here.
The history of the Blythe doll is convoluted and fascinating and largely influenced by photographer Gina Garan. If you care about it, you probably know more than I do, so I won't spend too much time on it. I am not a serious collector, though I have a few dolls in all three sizes: the original 28 cm (1/6 scale) full-sized dolls, the 11.2 cm Petite Blythe from Takara and the Middie Blythe of about 20 cm. The first Petite dolls were keychains, and after a brief time the design was changed so the Petite eyes would close when the doll was laid down. In 2010, Hasbro (who still own the intellectual property of all the Blythe dolls) produced a popular commercial version of Petite Blythe as a part of their Littlest Pet Shop toy line. These dolls were designated B1-52, though B36-38 were not released. Starting with B48 the eyes had painted on eyelashes and the pupils have a star. From this number releases were split with Target releasing one version and another for the non-US market. B50 and B51 were not released in the US. B52 was released in the US as Rockin' Pets and abroad as Totally Talented Pet Band (mine). The star in her pupil goes along with the Generation 2 pets released during the same time frame that had various symbols in their eyes (star symbolising sassiness). By 2013, Hasbro abandoned the Takara/CWC petite connection and went with a singularly ugly moulded vinyl version to match the character in their rebooted animated TV series, essentially a glorified marketing tool for the animals. Takara/CWC continued to release their 200+ petite dolls through 2014.
Money and space have constrained my investment in the dolls that are essentially tiny models to photograph. While the Takara versions of the smaller dolls are often beautiful, the plastics used in the bodies tend to disintegrate over time. The sleeping eyes are a problem and fixed heads which can turn on only one plane. The Hasbro Littlest Pet Shop versions are moulded in very sturdy vinyl and their heads are designed to pop on off and can be positioned in some lovely angles. Their arms and legs, however, are jointed only at the shoulder and hips where the Takara legs are bendable. I dress the various dolls and freely switch heads to get the effect I need. I am currently working on a set of musician dolls crafted from wire and permanently fixed in chairs with Polly Pocket limbs arranged to hold instruments. I will then be able to switch heads accordingly. We had to move to a new home last November and my craft projects are in total disarray so it is hard to know when this dream will be realised. Some of the dolls have found their way into habitats on various shelves around the house.
If you have made it through this much text, bless you and thanks.

Although I have rescued a lot of cats and kittens and a good deal of them have been feral cats, I have only actually rescued 4 adult feral cats. The very first one was Maya, mother to Smokey and she did not adapt very well to house life. She was pining to go outside all night every night. At the time I didn't know about TNR and using hindsight I would probably have put her back after getting her spayed. However, I relocated her to a barn home and I hope she is having a great life there.
The next adult feral cat was Mystery just this past January. Though I probably could have tamed her eventually, I was able to find a home for her that wanted an outdoor cat and they would look after her food and shelter. Though a little nervous about relocating her, I couldn't put her back where she came from so I did send her to that farm. I do receive updates from time to time about her and she is doing very well. She has adapted to their farm and gets along well with the other outdoor cat, so I am glad to have helped her.
The third and fourth adults have been Shadow and MC. They have continued to astonish me with their ability to adapt to this new life. Although I tamed them outside before bringing them in, I still expected to have more challenges than I have encountered.
Yesterday I switched the bedrooms around so that the alley cats could sleep with me at night. That entire side of the house was in complete disarray for half the day, and I spring cleaned everything while I had the rooms ripped apart. So MC hid under the chair for the day. She stayed under there after I finished the rooms and when my dad came over for supper I thought she would take off for her room for sure. She stayed under the chair when he came. He lay down on the floor and reached under the chair and gave her a couple of pets and spoke to her.
I guess that was enough for MC. Having introduced himself, he was now her friend. Out she came from under the chair and attached herself to him. What?!!! I would not have believed it if I hadn't have seen it. This 4 year old alley cat that I could barely pet only while she was eating just 6 months ago was rubbing up against my dad and letting him pick her up and handle her! Amazing! She was a little nervous at first, but as the minutes passed she got more and more comfortable with him. I also pulled Shadow out just before my dad left and let him get petted by Dad too. He was quite nervous, but he let Dad pet him and he even purred.
I wasn't surprised when these cats took to my mom, as she is similar to me in stature and mannerisms and she also took care of them every day in the alley when I took a vacation at Christmas. But I was surprised about MC taking to my dad. She has seen him twice before, in her room, but she hid both times, and he is quite a bit larger and scarier looking to a cat than I am.
You just never know with these cats.
This was my favorite image from a test roll on a camera I just got done repairing. Having sat for many years with little use, my film cameras are all in a unique state of disarray and needed some help getting back up and running. This one, a Pentax K1000, had a mirror that would get stuck up every few exposures making composition and focus impossible. After some digging around the interwebs I found the culprit to be a pair of gears that needed some oil, and after that it seems to be working great!
Not knowing how well it would perform in colder weather I took a digital camera along on this hike as well to have something to compare against. You can see the digital version here:

I was lining up this shot of the empty deckchairs on the shingle at Beer when the cloud came over.
There was a sudden gust of wind which blew all the chairs inside out and left them in a state of disarray!
This pic also looked like being in colour until the very last minute. The extra frame at top and bottom is also accidental but it kinda works so there it is :-)

If you just walked away
What could I really say?
Would it matter anyway?
Would it change how you feel?
I am the mess you chose
The closet you cannot close,
The devil in you I suppose
'Cause the wounds never heal.
But everything changes
If I could turn back the years
If you could learn to forgive me
Then I could learn to feel,
Sometimes the things I say
In moments of disarray
Succumbing to the games we play
To make sure that it's real.
When it's just me and you.
Who knows what we could do.
If we can just make it through
The toughest part of the day.
Stay here together
And we could
Conquer the world
If we could
Say that forever
Is more than just a word.
If you just walked away
What could I really say?
Would it matter anyway?.
It wouldn't change how you feel.
