Morning view of the northernmost city in Switzerland in autumn, after the mist burned off. I can't help but think of the 1980's movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" in which Michael Caine played Dr. Schaffhausen from Liechtenstein to trick Steve Martin's character. A UH-1Y kicks up a massive cloud of dust while landing at a Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP) site deep in the desert during an assault support tactics training event. Without the ability to refuel in the air, the 'Yankee' and its AH-1Z stablemate rely heavily on FARP sites to minimize breaks in station time while supporting Marines on the ground.
Shot for my article on how MAWTS-1 is training the next generation of UH-1Y Weapons and Tactics Instructors in the February 2022 issue of Combat Aircraft Journal.
The fight was long but together we succeeded.
The fire is out but the damage is done.
And now comes the time to rebuild.
Dirty, exhausted, tired but, proud of the work we did.
We are firefighters.
