Direct Pipe® in action
The process combines the advantages of microtunnelling and horizontal drilling technology (HDD). In just one work step, a prefabricated pipe can be installed without a trench and the required borehole can be created at the same time. This ensures that pipelines with lengths of over 1,500 meters can be laid quickly and very economically.
A clever combination of two technologies
The soil is excavated from the starting pit with a liquid-assisted Herrenknecht microtunnelling machine (AVN). It transports the spoil over a conveyor circuit within the prefabricated pipeline to a separation plant. The pipeline, which is laid out on roller blocks above ground and welded to the machine, is pushed into the borehole created at the same time as drilling. A pipe thruster provides the necessary propulsive power. It presses the microtunnelling machine together with the pipeline with a thrust of up to 750 tons in strokes of 5 meters. The force is transmitted to the pipeline via the clamping unit of the pipe thruster and via this to the drill head of the machine. During the advance, the face can be driven using fluid-supported tunneling technology even with heterogeneous, permeable soils are permanently and reliably controlled. Gradients and slopes as well as precise cornering in the course of the route can be carried out with control systems (UNS).
El científico británico, sir Phillip Campbell, fue recibido por autoridades de la institución, investigadores destacados y directivos de universidades. En la oportunidad, también, sostuvo un encuentro con estudiantes de posgrado en el marco de ”Ciencia en CONICYT”, una serie de actividades de divulgación programadas con motivo de la conmemoración de nuestros 50 años.
El astrofísico y editor en jefe de la revista Nature, sir Phillip Campbell, fue recibido por el Presidente del Consejo de CONICYT, doctor Mario Hamuy, en una reunión que contó con la asistencia de la embajadora del Reino Unido en Chile, Fiona Clouder; el Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas, doctor Juan Asenjo; el vicerrector de Investigación de la Universidad de Chile, doctor Flavio Salazar; la directora de Investigación de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, María Elena Boisier; y los miembros del Consejo de CONICYT Alejandra Mizala, Haroldo Salvo y Andrés Stutzin, entre otros participantes.
En su primera visita en Chile, en el contexto de su participación en el Congreso del Futuro, sir Campbell realizó una charla dirigida a investigadores, estudiantes de doctorado y funcionarios de la institución, en la que desarrolló su enfoque personal en torno a diversos temas relacionados con la evolución de la ciencia y sus impactos en la sociedad. La actividad permitió a los participantes dialogar de una forma cercana con el destacado investigador.
El doctor Mario Hamuy expresó que “es un placer recibir al destacado editor en CONICYT, dando el puntapié inicial a la celebración de estos 50 años de apoyo a la ciencia. Phillip Campbell hizo un espacio en su agenda y vino a nuestra institución a conversar con los científicos y a dar una charla pública muy interesante”.
El presidente del Consejo CONICYT agregó que “tuvimos oportunidad de conocer la perspectiva de una persona que ha estado ligada a la revista Nature por 40 años, lo que le ha permitido ver cómo evolucionan las distintas disciplinas, las maneras de evaluar los artículos. Además, nos comentó sobre los impactos de los papers que se publican en la revista, la más prestigiosa en el mundo de la ciencia. Es un privilegio haber podido contar con su presencia en Chile y en CONICYT”.
El doctor Campbell se graduó en ingeniería aeronáutica en la Universidad de Bristol en 1972, obtuvo el Master of Science en Astrofísica en Queen Mary College de Londres y el Ph.D. en Física Atmosférica en la Universidad de Leicester. Actualmente es el editor jefe de la revista científica Nature y Director de Nature Publishing Group desde 1995. Conduce un equipo de 90 editorialistas alrededor del mundo y es el responsable directo del contenido de la publicación. Además, ha trabajado en la Oficina Británica de Ciencia e Innovación, en la Comisión Europea y en los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de EEUU.
