Finally have some art for the dining room. Print from pushmepullyou design. Frame from American Frame. Thrift bowl and antique buffet.

Always having lived in apartments, decorating our first home has been a challenge. I like to keep things simple, yet colorful and inviting. It takes time to get things to feel right, never having had this much freedom with my living spaces before. When things come together, I feel super proud. But it's definitely difficult -- most rooms in my house look nothing like this, yet.

Used Percolator and then PhotoForge 2.

The Rottderdam had two dining rooms. When it was in transatlantic service, one was for first class and the other for tourist class. The dining room was on one of the lower decks, and had no windows, as was the custom on transatlantic ships.

Cruise ships are one class for dining and most other activiites, though there are great differences in the cabins. Now (2009), most cruise ships have specialty dining rooms at extra cost, in addition to the main dining room.

Interior architecture by Paul Seuntjens

All decked out for Christmas.

Prior to the construction of Waddesdon Manor, no house existed on the site. Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted a house in the style of the great Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley.[25] Ferdinand chose as his architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur.[26] Destailleur was already experienced in working in this style, having overseen the restoration of many châteaux in that region, in particular that of the Château de Mouchy.

Through Destailleur's vision, Waddesdon embodied an eclectic style based on the châteaux so admired by his patron, Baron Ferdinand. The towers at Waddesdon were based on those of the Château de Maintenon, and the twin staircase towers, on the north facade, were inspired by the staircase tower at the Château de Chambord.[27] However, following the theme of unparalleled luxury at Waddesdon, the windows of the towers at Waddesdon were glazed, unlike those of the staircase at Chambord. They are also far more ornate.

The structural design of Waddesdon was not all retrospective. Hidden from view were the most modern innovations of the late 19th century including a steel frame, which took the strain of walls on the upper floors, which consequently permitted the layout of these floors to differ completely from the lower floors.[28] The house also had hot and cold running water in its bathrooms, central heating, and an electric bell system to summon the numerous servants. The building contractor was Edward Conder & Son.[29]

After the Manor was completed in 1883, Ferdinand quickly decided it was too small. The Bachelors' Wing to the east was extended after 1885 and the Morning Room, built in late-Gothic style, was added to the west after 1888.[30] The stables to the west of the Manor were built in 1884. Ferdinand and his stud groom devised the plan, working with Conder. Destailleur designed the façades in a French 17th-century style.[31]

Wine Cellars[edit]

Wine Cellars

The Wine Cellars in the Manor were created during the Centenary Restoration and opened in 1994. They are modeled on the private cellars at Château Lafite Rothschild. More than 15,000 bottles are stored in the Cellars, some 150 years old, the majority from the Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild estates. It is the largest private collection of Rothschild wines in the world. There are also wine labels designed by artists such as Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.[32]

Only in California would you come across a place like this in the middle of a desert only to discover it's a film set (and it was packed with people standing around waiting to film something, I guess).

Description and Synopsis:

The book’s cover, printed in black with a heart-shaped image at its center, depicts a group of people seated at a table, One of the people reads from a large piece of paper as everyone else listens. The books contains a series of interrelated stories from different characters’ perspectives. The book begins with an explanation of its content: “We were three, quiet, lonely old men, and she was a lively, handsome young woman named Jessie; and we were at our wit’s end what to do with her” (Collins). The narrator goes on to explain that he and his brothers (the other old men) want to detain their young guest long enough for her to meet the narrator’s son, George. They plan to stall her departure by telling her stories. The cover, thus, likely depicts the three old men reading one of these stories to Jessie.

Further Notes:

Wilkie Collins was a prominent Victorian novelist best known for writing The Woman in White and The Moonstone. Collins lived most of his life in and around London and is remembered for his unconventional lifestyle and behavior. He was born with mild physical deformities and experienced chronic health problems as an adult; such health issues informed his depictions of many of his characters. After getting positive reviews on his first published novel, Antonina, Collins pursued a writing career. He befriended Charles Dickens, who encouraged Collins to write for Household Words, All the Year Round, and Bentley’s Miscellany. Collins also befriended other major writers and artists of the day. Collins never married, and instead lived with two women in separate houses. His critical views on the problematic roles of sex, marriage, and divorce in Victorian society are evident in his writing. A critical reevaluation of Collins’ oeuvre emerged during the late twentieth century (Peters).

My dentist has bird feeders outside his office windows. Fortunately his office is closed on the weekends, as it would be a little unsettling for his patients to see a guy lurking around the windows with a camera. Downy woodpecker, Amherst, NH.

It´s a lovely, sunny room, but the yellow paint the previous owner chose KILLS ME. I need to get rid of it as soon as I have gotten rid of the HIDEOUS NEON GREEN library. I have a hard life, I know.

(Also, not my furniture. Just to be clear.)

One of the things to do when visiting Atlanta is to go on a tour of the CNN centre. I was there on the day that all the action was in Washington, when they were debating President Obama's Healthcare bill, which later in the evening, was passed by The House of Representatives. An historic day for the country, remains to be seen how it all works out.

Although USA is the richest and most powerful country in the world, there is too much poverty, poverty which is very evident in the city centres. Many Americans proclaim themselves to be religious, Christina, Muslim or Jewish or Hindu and so on and I wonder how they can be comfortable living in a country where poor people are so much denied access to medical care and why there is so much opposition to a move by the recently elected President to provide this.

Examples of the hand crafted Arita porcelain plate ware from Kyushu, Japan that are used exclusively for the restaurant’s kaiseki meal are on display around the dining room.
