Comparisons of ceiling bounce (L) and all-round diffuser lighting (R).
White balance was mistakenly set to tungsten but this wasn't too important as the main intention was to compare intensities and coverage of:
- flash bounced off the ceiling (left column)
- flash through the Light Laxative bottle, equivalent in spread to Omnibounce/Lambency lighting (right column)
The top picture is taken with ambient light (halogen spotlights behind the camera plus the candlelight itself). It was deliberately 1-2 stops underexposed so that the flash would later dominate.
Following on down, each pair of pictures is shot with the flash at 1/32, 1/26, 1/8 and 1/4 strength. The flash was placed off-camera about 2m (6ft) to the right. The white ceiling was about 1.5m (5ft) above flash and subject. Triggering was from the built-in flash set to 1/128 strength.
I was surprised that the bottle wasn't absorbing too much of the light. What it lost in the vertical bounce off the white ceiling, it gained in the sideways throw.

I've been using a diffuser on my L1 because it provides even light for close up inspection and technical work. The nice thing is I can pop off the diffuser and light someone up (like some punk kids in the bushes) at a moments notice with no problems. Highly recommended if you need a floody beam from a TIR light.
A much better solution to your diffuser needs. It actually holds better than the custom sb600 overpriced crap I just bought :(
I made a diffuser for my 400D's pop-up flash by cutting slits into an empty film canister...it works quite well in reducing the intensity of the flash and hence preserving the warmth of the picture. Thanks Christopher Saw for the idea! I recommend everyone without a proper diffuser to try this out, it's great fun!

anyhow I thought I would start to try out some of the examples in the book. this is direct reflection vs diffused reflection. in the first the detail on the black door stop is far more distinguishable, in the second the texture of the frame is far more detailed.

This simple diffuser is made from scrap material and just snaps on to the DCR250 lens. Simple and easy diffuser for my macro shots.
Found these bottles at The Container Store (generic for travel). Just looked like the right size for a flash diffuser. I chose to cut off as little as possible but you could make the diffuser somewhat shorter to your liking. Bottle cost about $2.99 and fits the inside retainer of the Vivtar 285HV perfectly.
Here is the cut off DIY bottle diffuser on the Vivtar 285HV flash. Put a small bead of gaffer tape at the bottom to make it stay in. Stuck it on the long sides (top and bottom) to make it snap in and stay.
