This little chap has been hanging around my desk for what seems like eons. I love him – who wouldn't with that smile – but I was always unsure of how to photograph him in full storm/potato-trooper getup. Anyway, I came up with the idea of showing the face behind the mask. Henchmen never get the credit they deserve so here's my tribute to all the baddies in all the films who've never had a chance to show their faces before they're blown to smithereens!
Perspex base over burgundy card with black cloth background set six feet behind. Reflector (a piece of A4 paper) to camera right.
Bit of work in PS to get rid of some distracting reflections where my background cloth wasn't big enough to cover the entire frame.... but we'll keep that between ourselves!

I'm pretty much drugged up these couple days. Battling migraines and the onset of flu with panadol and clarinase. So, I'm feeling kinda lightheaded today.
I'm such a junkie.
Another one from the garden. I don't like the focus here, but I think the background made it worth posting :-) Hand held without flash.
Metacolus unifasciatus (Hymenoptera, Pteromalidae) female. Body length: 5 mm
This small parasitic wasp was photographed on dry white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) trunk. Handheld shot lit with diffused flash from above.

An IKEA bendable chopping board (1.99 euros a couple)
I've read something similar in a strobist article and I've to try how it works.
The diffuser is only half illuminated to put the bowl with beans in a darker place...
Sample of a polypropylene frost look material for the diffuser. Smooth on one side, frosted on the other. Not sure how many layers will be required, but it looks good as far as I can tell.
Update: Ordered a sheet (1300x1000x1.2mm) of the same material really cheap. Enough for as many as 12 layers. Not that I would need that many.
So I read on the net about diffusing the light from the flash on a camera to create a softer light!
I found this white box, which is made from plastic. It's the lid off of one of the many wonderful potions on my wife's dressing table!
It fits perfectly over the flash on my 1000D and gives some nice results!
