Today there were many people feeding the seals and I checked a number of tourist guides (in Easons) and many of them suggest "feeding the seals" in Howth as a recommended activity.
The most famous visitor to Howth may have been King George IV of England, who visited Ireland in 1821 and is chiefly remembered because he staggered off the boat in a highly inebriated state. He did manage to leave his footprints at the point where he stepped ashore on the West Pier.

Despite the health difficulties and stressful drama over the last few months, including getting laid off and venturing out on my own, it seems the big 39 has arrived.

Park Avenue Trail
Length: 2 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy.

After several technical difficulties, I'm finally back on schedule to begin painting! Haven't painted in quite some time so it's nice to mix things up a bit. Speaking about mixing up, that's what I've been doing over the past couple days - mixing paint! LOL!
Already have a few coats of gray acrylic (primer) applied to the Newborn heads. Jeunet only needs one but I always like to have two worked up just in case.

I recently stumbled upon this wonderful body of work by photographer Travis Ruse that occupied some Ad space at the Bryant Park station. The MTA's statement on their website for the project reads as such: Travis Ruse is a chronicler of his daily subway commute, using his camera to record a daily journal of images: the people and scenes from his Brooklyn to Manhattan commute. For more than two years Ruse used the opportunity provided by his 45-minute commute via three train lines to create a series of vivid photographs. His lens captures those at rest, reading, waiting anxiously, workers traveling in groups, or hurriedly racing to the train - all the scenes of the subway captured through the eye of an artist who uses the available light in a split second, to isolate the humanity - and even the joy - in being part of the masses in mass transit. Delicate Arch trail.

Difficulty: Moderate
Description: Delicate Arch is the most recognizable arch in Arches National Park, and perhaps anywhere in the world. It also happens to be located along one of the most dynamic hiking trails within Arches National Park. More than 480 feet above the parking lot and trailhead in the valley below, Delicate Arch is hidden in a bowl at the top of one of the park’s famous sandstone fins. Delicate Arch is freestanding, and magnificently alone in the natural sandstone bowl, standing out against the multitude of horizontal planes around it. The arch was once part of the upper section of the fin, until erosion took its toll upon the sandstone throughout the years, and now Delicate Arch is all that remains of that Entrada sandstone formation.
The Delicate Arch Trailhead is located on the Wolfe Ranch turnoff, which is 11.5 miles up the Arches Entrance Road. The right turn to Delicate Arch is advertised at the turnoff, and the trailhead is on the left side of the road, at the ranch. The trail is rugged and steep, especially near the end as it mounts the sloped side of the sandstone fin. Along the way, visitors will pass a pioneer homestead, Ute Indian petroglyphs, an overgrown streambed, throngs of juniper, a smaller arch, and the famous slickrock for which the Moab area is world-famous.

The trail starts at a fairly large parking lot off the side of the road, passes the old Wolfe Homestead, and then crosses a bridge over Salt Wash.
Wolfe Ranch
This homestead was built by a disabled Civil War vet, John Wesley Wolfe, in 1888 and inhabited until 1910, when the aging owner moved back to Ohio.
Ute Petroglyphs
This panel of rock art is attributed to the Ute culture. In includes a number of bighorn sheep, horses and dogs.

Frame Arch is next to invisible when compared with the splendor of Delicate Arch just around the corner; most hikers barely even recognize the arch on its own merits. However, Frame Arch is famous for being the perfect window through which to photograph Delicate Arch, and many people use it to frame their shots of its more photogenic sibling, as its name suggests.

I was chopping down some elephant grass in the front yard, and after my Craftsman handsaw had difficulty cutting it, I tried using my Fiskars (AKA Gerber) Brush Hook machete, and a chop deflected it up off the hard grass, and into my hand before I could react. I had a lanyard on the sharp knife to act as a mechanical advantage as a longer lever for greater force; with a half grip on the very end of the handle with the 550 cord lanyard around the wrist aiding in the retention of the chopper.
The bad news is, this also caused me to be unable to release the knife as it deflected, and the momentum continued it into my hand, before I could react it had hit me.
I was unable to stop, much like when you think you can brace yourself for a car impact, but later when it happens you find out that you can't.
I felt the impact, which was a numbing in my hand. I was afraid to look at first, and I hoped I had been hit below the blade at the top of the handle, because it was numb and didn't hurt very bad.
I looked and saw that I'd been cut, realizing the straite edge at the bottom of the blade did it. If it had been closer to the end when it impacted, it would have been a force multiplier for greater damage. Worse still at the very end, where the hook is. It has a curved edge, and causes a shearing affect as it cuts, because the curve causes all the energy to be focused on a smaller area which moves as the curve forces it to as it chops, much like a kurkri.

This was a single exposure F/2.0 @ 1/40s ISO 80 (chosen by histogram without flash) using my small Leica compact. It was taken early Friday morning about 7:50 AM. I tried just a little TTL flash (Flash-EV -1 2/3). In Adobe's raw converter, mostly exposure, fill light, black point, and saturation, plus some slight exposure gradients. Next in CS5, addressed noise and sharpening with Topaz plug-ins, then cloned out a couple defects. During most of my photographic life, I previously shunned use of a flash, but recently, the more I experiment, I'm beginning to think it has it's uses. Rough and Perfect Ashlar
A rough and perfect ashlar are stones which symbolize Man's moral and spiritual life.
Cutting stone to uniform shapes and sizes requires the skill and experience of a true craftsman with many years of experience.
This is why, historically, only large edifices (buildings) were made of ashlars (rather than brick or wood), due to the necessity (and difficulty) of assembling the many skilled craftsman needed to complete the many subsets of knowledge such as how to build a stone archway, how to lay foundation stone, and how to lay stone, one atop another to great heights...not to mention the artisans who sculpted the stones into ornamental shapes.
In days of old, apprentice masons cut and raised the Rough Ashlars from the stone quarry under the supervision of more experienced craftsman, called Fellowcrafts.
The work was accomplished under the watchful eye of the Master masons of the craft...those who had proved their ability to make their Master's piece to the satisfaction of their superiors.
In Freemasonry, there are 2 forms of ashlars.
Rough Ashlar
In operative Freemasonry, the rough ashlar represents a rough, unprepared or undressed stone. In speculative Freemasonry, a rough ashlar is an allegory to the uninitiated Freemason prior to his discovering enlightenment.
Perfect Ashlar
Operatively, the Perfect ashlar represents the dressed stone (after it has been made uniform and smoothed) by use of the working tools, the common gavel, (mallet) and chisel. (The chisel may be found in English Freemasonry, but is not used in the United States as a Freemason symbol.)
Only after the stone has been dressed by an experienced stonemason, can it be suitable to be placed into the architectural structure or building.
Speculatively, a Perfect Ashlar is an allegory to a Freemason who, through Masonic education, works to achieve an upstanding life and diligently strives to obtain enlightenment.
Rough and Perfect Ashlars
In the Fellowcraft Degree, we see the use of the Rough and Perfect Ashlars. The lesson to be learned is that by means of education and the acquirement of knowledge, a man improves the state of his spiritual and moral being.
Like man, each Rough Ashlar begins as an imperfect stone. With education, cultivation and brotherly love, man is shaped into a being which has been tried by the square of virtue and encircled by the compasses of his boundaries, given to us by our Creator.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar: Fitted For The Builder's Use
In ancient times, quarried stone which could be easily shaped into desired configurations, was called "freestone". Typical freestones are limestone and sandstone.
Then, as now, only after refining and smoothing these rough stones into their desired shape, were the stonemasons able to "fit them for the builder's use".
In the Fellowcraft degree, the Rough Ashlar represents a man's unrefined state and his need for improvement. He learns that the goal of being a better man includes spirituality of thought and striving for perfection of conduct. Via duties, expectations and obligations, he is charged to work toward these goals of self improvement.
As the Freemason "smoothes" his rough edges, internally and externally; he becomes a better man and, therefore, a better Freemason.
Once a man has perfected his ashlar to the best of his ability,... as Brothers to all mankind, it is his duty to help others become better men and better Freemasons.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar - The Potential For Change
All rough ashlars must have within them the potential to be made into a perfect ashlar.
The stone must be made of sound material and have a minimum of character flaws which may cause it to weaken the edifice (building). It must be capable of being worked into a perfect stone. This is why candidates for the degrees are asked many questions as to their qualifications and character about why they wish to become Freemasons.
The candidate must have the potential to both serve and support the Fraternity. He must be carefully inspected, just as each Rough Ashlar is inspected for quality in order to be able to "fit" him into Freemasonry's tenets and goals, which are compatible to God's laws.
An imperfect stone may be made perfect, however major flaws are difficult to overcome and when assembled into a structure, the entire structure can be weakened from its improper use. This is as true of men as it is of stones.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar - States of Metamorphose
Freemasonry has a glorious history. Flawed ashlars can bring negative feelings and reproach upon the Fraternity from non-Freemasons in the outside world and therefore, can have no place within its walls.
...That said,...let us not forget that perfect ashlars are not found lying about the stone quarry without benefit of their having been hammered, chiseled and polished into such a state of being.
It also holds true that "perfect" men are also such an anomaly without the benefit of brotherly love, guidance and light. There are very few Freemasons who have not been in both the rough and perfect ashlar state-of-being at some point in their lives.
Freemason Duties For the Future of the Craft
1. Freemasons must give serious consideration to our personal responsibility to educate other Brothers toward their self improvement.
Like the Good Samaritan in the Holy Books; it is in the giving and assistance to others in which you will find the true "jewels" of enlightenment. True Master Masons not only exemplify the tenets of the craft, but they teach what they learn.

3. Each Freemason is charged to extend the hand of brotherly love and affection to help new Freemasons become better men and strive to live on the square, stand upright with the plumb and take their true place as a man who would make his Creator (the Almighty), proud of him.
The lesson of the Rough and Perfect Ashlar applies to all men who are worthy,...who have a heartfelt wish to go from ignorance to knowledge,...from darkness to light...and from death to life.

I am experiencing difficulties photographing Elsie in the after school available light. Elsie seldom stays still and certainly not long enough for the shutter speeds this afternoon. Any suggestions welcome, but please bear in mind I'm not a camera wizard.
Peter and I bought this flashing wand in Bradford City square at the weekend. There were beautiful lights for Diwali (which I think is in November) and street sellers selling flashing sticks and wands. This wand was a great hit and stuffed toys that had been turned to stone by wicked Grangran, or thrown off cliffs by wicked Grangran were miraculously restored to life by the good fairy princess Elsie's new wand . . .
I'm sorry I'm behind with looking at everyone's photos, but will catch up in the next day or two . . .
Emerald Pool-Lower
Length: 1.2 mile roundtrip

Description: The Lower Pool is popular among hikers for its beauty and accessibility. The trail is short and gently sloped—with only 70 feet of elevation gain. Shaded by cottonwoods and other riverside greenery, the trail winds through one of Zion’s many hidden paradises, leading to a startlingly gorgeous canyon sanctuary. The Emerald Pools system has a few trail options for the three different levels of the Pools. All of them except for one start across the road from the Zion Lodge, where you go over a bridge to cross the North Fork of the Virgin River. Swimming is not permitted at Emerald Pools anymore.
Emerald Pools Trailhead
Two trails start at this spot, the Lower and the Middle. The trail to the lower Pool is fairly straightforward, just over half a mile long, meandering through the riparian habitat along the bottom of the river, even passing underneath the two waterfalls that come from the Middle Pool above.
Lower Pool
Despite the relative ease of the hike, hikers find themselves amid the classic towering rock formations of Zion—but surrounded by a paradise of green.
Middle Pool
Steeper and longer than the Lower Pool Trail, the trail to the Middle Pools begins in the same spot, but climbs higher up the slope, exploring yet another level of the exquisite Zion waterway.
Upper Pool
The Upper Pool is harder to reach than the other two, though worth the extra time that it will take to visit. Waterfalls, fast and powerful during the runoff months, add to the breathtaking backdrop of Zion Canyon.
I'm having difficulty with ID of this insect. If I saw it in the UK, I'd identify it as a High Brown Fritillary (Argynnis adippe) but since it was in mid-Italy - Umbria, I wonder if it be something different.
It shot off too fast for me to inspect the underside!

The only difficulty in the navigation is about four miles above Newcastle where there is a large expanse of water which is very shallow and the channel navigated by shipping very intricate, here the water when low sometimes shoals to less than six feet. The skippers of the steam boats now know its [linuiosities] so well that they venture thro it at half speed. The banks of the river are covered with thick bush except where clearances have been made for farms. The strong deep and thick bushes with their variety of foliage and beautiful blossums rising on the almost perpendicular banks of the stream form a particoloured screen to the deep smooth river, and produce an awful sensation of quiet on the mind of the stranger, where there is nothing to break the repose of the scene except occasionally a few black swans, or a solitary kangaroo half swimming half wading across the stream, but even these are gradually disappearing since our steamers have picked up a few of these solitaries in their aquatic excursions and taken them a much longer voyage than they at first contemplated when they entrusted themselves to this treacherous element.
From Maitland to Sydney a distance of about 129 miles by land there is now a road formed, which is unquestionably a most stupendous undertaking, nearly fifty miles of it runs thro a chain of mountains and the road is cut out of their sides occasionally in parts that are nearly perpendicular, for the lovers of the picturesque this road has a thousand charms, but it is to be feared that the years of uncaring toil and the immense sums which have been [expended] on it, have been spent in [vain] since Steam Navigation has opened so much speedier and convenient a course for this traffic of this district of the Colony.
Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, commanding general of Installation Management Command, was the honored speaker at the All-Veterans Memorial Service on Sunday, April 17, 2011. He and his wife, Mrs. Sarah Lynch, attended the event along with Command Sgt. Maj. Neil Ciotola, held at the Monument for the Battle of Hill 881 South on Veterans Square Auditorium Circle in downtown San Antonio, Texas.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 366 hosted the service on the last day of Fiesta, an 11-day “Party With a Purpose” that donates all proceeds to local charities. About 100 people attended the service, including members of the military from units and commands based in San Antonio, veterans, members of the Vietnamese-American Community and those simply wanting to say “thanks.”
Lynch told the story behind the monument dedicated to the Vietnam War’s Battle of Hill 881 South, an image of a radio operator treating a wounded comrade. The operator’s face is lifted toward the sky, searching for the medevac helicopter to help his friend, Lynch explained.
“I think a lot about freedom and about how somebody paid for it,” he said to the multitude of veterans and servicemembers in the crowd. “Those somebodies are here in the crowd today. I’m humbled to be in your presence.”
Pointing to the medals on his uniform, he said, “These trappings mean nothing to me. What’s important to me is recognizing those who serve. I want to thank you for your service.”
Lynch also took time to recognize the difficulties both Wounded Warriors and Gold Star Families face during recovery and asked that Americans take time thank them for their service. He reminded the crowd of the tragedy they have live through every day since the attack on Sept. 11 and that the Army will be fighting that war for another decade.
“We took the fight to there so we don’t have to fight on the streets of San Antonio,” he asserted as the crowd applauded. “We need your continued support.”
Trong Pham, chief engineer of the personnel system at Randolph Air Force Base, the “Expression of Gratitude” speaker at the service, represented the Vietnamese-American Community of San Antonio. Born and raised in Vietnam, he told the story of his escape from his home country in 1977 at age 19. His boat was lost on the South China Sea until he and the other refugees were rescued by American C-130 helicopters.
“I can’t express in words how much this event means to me,” he said. “This event reminded me of how fragile freedom is without sacrifice. We can’t enjoy the life we have here without our veterans.”
After arriving in America, Pham went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a master’s and a Ph.D. during his 25 years of service with the Air Force. He continued to serve after his time in the military, working in civil service.
The event ended with a 21-gun salute and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the foot of the memorial. Lt. Gen. Neil Ciotola took part in the Pilgrimage to the Alamo Monday, April 11 at 4 p.m. Since 1925, the Daughters of the Alamo have led this time-honored tradition to pay homage to the defenders of the fateful garrison.
A solemn procession of various civic organizations, patriotic groups and military units and commands silently carry wreaths six blocks from the Municipal Auditorium and lay them to rest in front of the Alamo. A voice calls out the names of the defenders who gave their lives for Texas independence.
Lt. Gen. Guy Swan, commanding general of U.S. Army North, gave remarks and the ceremony ended with taps.

The bird fell off the falconer's wrist, and he was having some difficulty returning it to its perch.
one difficulty in photographing the mechanical miniatures is that they tend to be in motion most of the time. nowhere is this more severe than in the "opium den" machine, which, plausibly, depicts the denizens as rapidly shaking, jittery maniacs. also for some reason there's a snake that comes through the wall, and some skeletons and zombies and things. anyway, that's why this is so blurry (though the snake managed to come through pretty sharp!)
Rough and Perfect Ashlar
A rough and perfect ashlar are stones which symbolize Man's moral and spiritual life.
Cutting stone to uniform shapes and sizes requires the skill and experience of a true craftsman with many years of experience.
This is why, historically, only large edifices (buildings) were made of ashlars (rather than brick or wood), due to the necessity (and difficulty) of assembling the many skilled craftsman needed to complete the many subsets of knowledge such as how to build a stone archway, how to lay foundation stone, and how to lay stone, one atop another to great heights...not to mention the artisans who sculpted the stones into ornamental shapes.
In days of old, apprentice masons cut and raised the Rough Ashlars from the stone quarry under the supervision of more experienced craftsman, called Fellowcrafts.
The work was accomplished under the watchful eye of the Master masons of the craft...those who had proved their ability to make their Master's piece to the satisfaction of their superiors.
In Freemasonry, there are 2 forms of ashlars.
Rough Ashlar
In operative Freemasonry, the rough ashlar represents a rough, unprepared or undressed stone. In speculative Freemasonry, a rough ashlar is an allegory to the uninitiated Freemason prior to his discovering enlightenment.
Perfect Ashlar
Operatively, the Perfect ashlar represents the dressed stone (after it has been made uniform and smoothed) by use of the working tools, the common gavel, (mallet) and chisel. (The chisel may be found in English Freemasonry, but is not used in the United States as a Freemason symbol.)
Only after the stone has been dressed by an experienced stonemason, can it be suitable to be placed into the architectural structure or building.
Speculatively, a Perfect Ashlar is an allegory to a Freemason who, through Masonic education, works to achieve an upstanding life and diligently strives to obtain enlightenment.
Rough and Perfect Ashlars
In the Fellowcraft Degree, we see the use of the Rough and Perfect Ashlars. The lesson to be learned is that by means of education and the acquirement of knowledge, a man improves the state of his spiritual and moral being.
Like man, each Rough Ashlar begins as an imperfect stone. With education, cultivation and brotherly love, man is shaped into a being which has been tried by the square of virtue and encircled by the compasses of his boundaries, given to us by our Creator.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar: Fitted For The Builder's Use
In ancient times, quarried stone which could be easily shaped into desired configurations, was called "freestone". Typical freestones are limestone and sandstone.
Then, as now, only after refining and smoothing these rough stones into their desired shape, were the stonemasons able to "fit them for the builder's use".
In the Fellowcraft degree, the Rough Ashlar represents a man's unrefined state and his need for improvement. He learns that the goal of being a better man includes spirituality of thought and striving for perfection of conduct. Via duties, expectations and obligations, he is charged to work toward these goals of self improvement.
As the Freemason "smoothes" his rough edges, internally and externally; he becomes a better man and, therefore, a better Freemason.
Once a man has perfected his ashlar to the best of his ability,... as Brothers to all mankind, it is his duty to help others become better men and better Freemasons.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar - The Potential For Change
All rough ashlars must have within them the potential to be made into a perfect ashlar.
The stone must be made of sound material and have a minimum of character flaws which may cause it to weaken the edifice (building). It must be capable of being worked into a perfect stone. This is why candidates for the degrees are asked many questions as to their qualifications and character about why they wish to become Freemasons.
The candidate must have the potential to both serve and support the Fraternity. He must be carefully inspected, just as each Rough Ashlar is inspected for quality in order to be able to "fit" him into Freemasonry's tenets and goals, which are compatible to God's laws.
An imperfect stone may be made perfect, however major flaws are difficult to overcome and when assembled into a structure, the entire structure can be weakened from its improper use. This is as true of men as it is of stones.
Rough and Perfect Ashlar - States of Metamorphose
Freemasonry has a glorious history. Flawed ashlars can bring negative feelings and reproach upon the Fraternity from non-Freemasons in the outside world and therefore, can have no place within its walls.
...That said,...let us not forget that perfect ashlars are not found lying about the stone quarry without benefit of their having been hammered, chiseled and polished into such a state of being.
It also holds true that "perfect" men are also such an anomaly without the benefit of brotherly love, guidance and light. There are very few Freemasons who have not been in both the rough and perfect ashlar state-of-being at some point in their lives.
Freemason Duties For the Future of the Craft
1. Freemasons must give serious consideration to our personal responsibility to educate other Brothers toward their self improvement.
Like the Good Samaritan in the Holy Books; it is in the giving and assistance to others in which you will find the true "jewels" of enlightenment. True Master Masons not only exemplify the tenets of the craft, but they teach what they learn.
2. Lodges should carefully judge the potential of each candidate, weighing both their character and their potential for change. For more information as to how to properly perform this duty, see my page Masonic Investigation Committee.
3. Each Freemason is charged to extend the hand of brotherly love and affection to help new Freemasons become better men and strive to live on the square, stand upright with the plumb and take their true place as a man who would make his Creator (the Almighty), proud of him.
The lesson of the Rough and Perfect Ashlar applies to all men who are worthy,...who have a heartfelt wish to go from ignorance to knowledge,...from darkness to light...and from death to life.
