Sometimes it is very difficult to try and capture the true beauty of your subject and the personality. I spent a day with her as I was fascinated by her and her beauty ! She was very coquette and seemed to know just how to attract her mate. I loved the time I spent with her and hope we will see some off spring shortly !!

Wishing you all a lovely and blessed evening !!

The common name of this species of fungus that typically appears as a round piece of black coal-lik ball attached to a dying or dead tree trunks and branches is King Alfred’s cakes. This name originates from legend that King Alfred (who ruled in 9th century) was mistaken for a soldier by a peasant woman in the house were he was seeking a refuge after the battle. She asked him to look after cakes baking on the fire but he fell asleep…, well, another name for these fungi are coal fungi. Whether this story is true or not difficult to say because it was first told 100 years after the King lived, but the name sticks to the fungus forever.

The scientific name of this common and widespread saprotrophic fungus is Daldinia concentrica. The genus Daldinia is named in honour of Agostino Daldini, a Swiss clergyman and botanist. The specific epithet ‘concentrica’ is self-explanatory if you look at the image above showing concentric rings of the fungal body. This is where black spores are matured and then driven up to the surface and expelled outside through tiny openings. The concentric rings are thought to reflect seasonal growth like tree rings - so it is likely to be about 12 years old. Majority of trees were planted here in 2000. This fungus, when dry, can be used as tinder to light fires, hence another name the tinder bracket.

This specimen was neatly sliced in half by a chainsaw I think when this ash tree trunk was fell down and cleared of branches; a cut through the branch seen on the left. Massive clearance is taken place in this Community Woodland as part of removal ash trees infected with dieback fungus, as well as general maintenance. Primrose Hill Community woodland.

Happy Easter everyone. I thought this might be an uplifting song for Easter morning in the light of the challenges our world faces right now - continuing COVID, the war in Ukraine threatening to get even worse and difficult economic times. There is a small explanation of what the song is about at the end of the lyrics. The shot was taken at Bribie Island in SE Queensland. The link will take you to the youtube video. This song was used as the closing theme in the very funny movie "Bridesmaids" which also had some great messages.

Hold On Lyrics (With thanks to Genius)

I know this pain (I know this pain)

Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?

No one can change your life except for you

Don't ever let anyone step all over you

Just open your heart and your mind

Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

Can you hold on for one more day?

Things'll go your way

Hold on for one more day

You could sustain

Or are you comfortable with the pain?

You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness

You got yourself into your own mess

Lettin' your worries pass you by

Don't you think it's worth your time

To change your mind?

Ooh, no

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

Can you hold on for one more day?

Things'll go your way

Hold on for one more day

I know that there is pain

But you hold on for one more day and

Break free from the chains

Yeah, I know that there is pain

But you hold on for one more day and you

Break free, break from the chains

Someday, somebody's gonna make you wanna

Turn around and say goodbye

Until then, baby, are you gonna let them

Hold you down and make you cry?

Don't you know?

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day, yeah

If you hold on

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day

If you hold on

Can you hold on?

Hold on, baby

Won't you tell me now?

Hold on for one more day 'cause

It's gonna go your way

Don't you know things can change?

Things'll go your way

If you hold on for one more day, yeah

Can't you change it this time?

The song emphasizes the importance of persevering in spite of obstacles and not let the situation consume you. Everything will be alright in the end.

This was a difficult compromise :-) I think Macro Mondays has challenged all of us members throughout the year. I chose to focus on some elements I used for the "Relaxation" theme (surfboards, see here: www.flickr.com/photos/134352553@N04/35597512936/) and a new take on the "Musical instruments" theme (piano instead of guitar, see here: www.flickr.com/photos/134352553@N04/24270050178/).

To me, using creativity to figure out what to do is quite different from the "busy" daily life. It is like diving into a paradise where heavenly music plays and "forces" you to relax... agree?

MG Tower was another difficult to access tower, but despite the tough to get to location, MG was lensed by a plethora of railfans over the years. Over three quarters of a century after its construction, MG still stands west of the Horseshoe Curve, long since closed. On this snowy day in February of 1985, though, MG was very much alive! A westbound with helpers on the rear is seen exiting MG's interlocking limits as another westbound is about to take a clear signal lined by the operator.

Shadows are now cast across the garden by the larger trees nearby. The newly planted flowers are taking on their true shape and texture. Skellig Michael, is a twin-pinnacled crag 11.6 kilometres west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The island is named after the archangel Michael, with "Skellig" derived from the Irish language word sceilig, meaning a splinter of stone. Its twin island, Little Skellig (Sceilig Bheag), is smaller and inaccessible (landing is not permitted). The two islands rose c. 374–360 million years ago during a period of mountain formation, along with the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range. Later, they were separated from the mainland by rising water levels.

Skellig Michael consists of approximately 22 hectares of rock, with its highest point, known as the Spit, 218 m above sea level. The island is defined by its twin peaks and intervening valley (known as Christ's Saddle), which make its landscape steep and inhospitable. It is best known for its Gaelic monastery, founded between the 6th and 8th centuries, and its variety of inhabiting species, which include gannets, puffins, a colony of razorbills and a population of approximately fifty grey seals. The island is of special interest to archaeologists, as the monastic settlement is in unusually good condition. The monastery is situated at an elevation of 170 to 180 m, Christ's Saddle at 129 m, and the flagstaff area at 37 m above sea level.

The monastery can be approached by narrow and steep flights of stone steps which ascend from three landing points. The hermitage on the south peak contains a dangerous approach and is largely closed to the public. Because of the often difficult crossing from the mainland and the exposed nature of the landing spots, the island is accessible only during summer months. UNESCO designated Skellig Michael a World Heritage Site in 1996.

There was just a small slot across the Lake to the south. I was thinking that the clouds that were moving in would slide over and block off the gap before sunrise. That seems to be what often happens. On Tuesday, the clouds took their time and the sun was able to shine through the slot for the sunrise.

Lake levels are low enough (about 7 inches less than last year) to walk the shoreline in places where it previously was very difficult to do without getting wet.

We have had no extended period of cold weather at the south end of Lake Michigan this winter. The only places with ice seem to be up in the quiet water parts of Green Bay.

Thanks for looking!

Taken with a vintage 500mm mirror lens on my Micro 4/3 Olympus camera, making the effective focal length 1000mm. To get these flowers in the frame for this composition I had to stand around 8 to 10 meters away from them and the only crop I applied was to get it into a square format. A lens that is a nightmare to use but honestly, so much fun to try to tame the beast. Don't even bother trying to focus the thing at anything less than 1/1000 sec shutter speed. It's like a gifted but very difficult child, hard to control but in the end, worth all the effort.

And not a donut in sight! (Mirror lenses are notorious for producing donut shaped bokeh balls.)

A difficult year is coming to an end, certainly for all people on earth, may the coming year bring us some simplicity back.

Red-winged Blackbird watching me closely!

Posing nicely in the late afternoon light, while keeping a wary eye on me - I must have been close to the nest.

I find Red-winged Blackbirds to be very difficult to capture due to the very dark feathers - here everything was well setup to capture those details - I did very very little post processing to this image, unlike my usual bending ;)

This kind of shows off the very nice bokeh that this 400mm f/4.5 can produce - I hope you like it!

Difficult Life

If you're going through a hard time right now, I encourage you to worship God first before you plunge yourself into your daily life. I know the world expects and demands much from you. The pressure is intense. You forget to pray. Remember that before you can drive a car you must fill it up with gasoline. Only then can you go on your daily journey.

You try to read all the road signs, but sometimes you run into obstacles on your way or you fail to see you're going down a dead end. Such obstacles can make you nervous or even sick. They can lead you to stress, anger, or despair, and before you know it you're driving way too fast and in the wrong direction.

The obstacles will not disappear, but when you pray and trust in the Lord, He will be your guide. By listening to His voice you will gain insight. Recovery always takes time. Keep praying for insight and wisdom, keep reading your Bible daily, and slowly you'll be able to see the road better and know where you are going. There is no shadow in life that can stop His light!
