The back of MacArthur Mill is difficult to photograph, for the sightlines are obscured by trees. However, I found a spot by the channel to photograph the scene before the trees would leaf-out.

I called this a channel and not the river because it is human-engineered. It created an island with the river flowing on the other side of the mill. You can see the split in the previously-posted photo that I will put in comments.

By the way, apparently the river has seldom flowed higher than it has this year.

8-10 mm. Completely reddish brown colored blowhead fly with yellow head. The different species from this genus are difficult to distinguish. Only the females can be determined with certainty, based on the shape of the cleat. The ordinary crooked body has a light that is flattened and barely protruding.

Similar species

Looks a lot like the mystical crook body, but can be distinguished by the flattened cleat. Species from the genus Myopa are also colored red-brown, but have a white head.

Biotope

The species parasitizes on bumblebees and can therefore be found everywhere where bumblebees can be found: from gardens and city parks to moors and bogs.

Appearance

A general species that is spread all over the Netherlands. Flight time late May to early September.

Herkenning

8-10 mm.

Difficult to find but wonderful when you do...

A difficult shot as you may infer from the settings I had to use. Happy with the outcome under the circumstances. I could barely see him at first.... And of course, anything that was sunlit was horribly overexposed! Thanks to modern cameras and computer software, we can find / enjoy the thrills hidden in the branches!

This section along the shoreline south of Lost Villages Museum, Long Sault, Ontario. Open water on the St. Lawrence River that can be accessible for our canoe. Unfortunately snow falling the next 4 days making it difficult to paddle. Soon ice will form here too soon.

Below, where I scootered to view this. There is a long walk to the shoreline from Lost Villages, where my scooter is viewed below…

It has always been difficult to go back to where I was when I hiberate for a long time.

So bear with my recovery.

I will only feel confident if I could start annoying people who hate HDRs. If that starts again, that means I'm back.

I think this is where I feel the independence if I am aggressive with my HDRs. And if I fall back to my mentality that whether you like it or not, I'll just publish and show it to the world, I know I'm in the groove.

I'm on my way to get back my KK Touch and thus, I can finally finish my HDR book. I want to publish it in a month. Help me by supporting me.

BTW, look, no people. But there were people in the original shot. Okay. It is not magic. It is simply Photoshop CS5 new content aware thing. It's included in the HDR book. Very simple to remove the people and any unwanted objects like signs and wires with the new Photoshop CS5.

And also, if you look closely at this HDR, focus on the picture, can't you see that it is in 3D? Let me know if you managed to view this in 3D.

Very dark afternoon,,,quite difficult get good shots.

There was just a small slot across the Lake to the south. I was thinking that the clouds that were moving in would slide over and block off the gap before sunrise. That seems to be what often happens. On Tuesday, the clouds took their time and the sun was able to shine through the slot for the sunrise.

Lake levels are low enough (about 7 inches less than last year) to walk the shoreline in places where it previously was very difficult to do without getting wet.

We have had no extended period of cold weather at the south end of Lake Michigan this winter. The only places with ice seem to be up in the quiet water parts of Green Bay.

Thanks for looking!

Taken with a vintage 500mm mirror lens on my Micro 4/3 Olympus camera, making the effective focal length 1000mm. To get these flowers in the frame for this composition I had to stand around 8 to 10 meters away from them and the only crop I applied was to get it into a square format. A lens that is a nightmare to use but honestly, so much fun to try to tame the beast. Don't even bother trying to focus the thing at anything less than 1/1000 sec shutter speed. It's like a gifted but very difficult child, hard to control but in the end, worth all the effort.

And not a donut in sight! (Mirror lenses are notorious for producing donut shaped bokeh balls.)

Difficult Life

If you're going through a hard time right now, I encourage you to worship God first before you plunge yourself into your daily life. I know the world expects and demands much from you. The pressure is intense. You forget to pray. Remember that before you can drive a car you must fill it up with gasoline. Only then can you go on your daily journey.

You try to read all the road signs, but sometimes you run into obstacles on your way or you fail to see you're going down a dead end. Such obstacles can make you nervous or even sick. They can lead you to stress, anger, or despair, and before you know it you're driving way too fast and in the wrong direction.

The obstacles will not disappear, but when you pray and trust in the Lord, He will be your guide. By listening to His voice you will gain insight. Recovery always takes time. Keep praying for insight and wisdom, keep reading your Bible daily, and slowly you'll be able to see the road better and know where you are going. There is no shadow in life that can stop His light!

This is probably the most difficult photo manipulation I've ever done.. I was about to give up but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Very difficult shooting conditions make for less that an ideal image, but the noteworthy trait of these snakes are the vertically elliptical eye pupils. Cochise County, Arizona.

I find siskins difficult to capture -- they are small and highly active. A fast shutter speed was used to freeze movement.

Here the bird is perched high in an alder (the German name meaning alder finch is appropriate). The English name siskin is actually derived from the German dialect words Sisschen, Zeischen, which are diminutive forms of Middle High German zîsec and Middle Low German ziseke, sisek, words, which are apparently of Slavic origin.

The strong black and yellow head markings indicate that this is a male; the female is more subdued in colour, with a streaked head.

Widespread breeding species in mixed and coniferous woodlands in Europe with a disjunct population in the Far East.

Gasteruptiid Wasp (family Gasteruptiidae (subfamily Gasteruptiinae)) male

I find these Wasps difficult to capture, they seem to be always on the move. This one stopped for a minute. I have inverted the image as it was hanging down and I thought it looked better this way.

Jack Snipes are usually among Britain's most difficult birds to see, and especially to photograph. They are winter visitors from northern Scandinavia and Russia and usually stay hidden in dense vegetation and don't usually fly unless you almost tread on them. But when they have just flown across the North Sea they are desperate to find food, and sometimes they land without finding a proper place to feed and hide. This individual at Kilnsea was seen to fly in and land actually in the first bit of fresh water it could find, which was little more than a garden pond. It walked round the edge of the tiny pond more concerned with feeding than hiding and offering rare close photo-opportunities of this normally invisible species. It had a mesmerising bouncing motion as it walked and fed, but I have not managed to find an explanation of why they bounce but here's a great video of one bouncing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=61Lahe1D_pQ I think that the reason they bounce is because the worms they feed on will move deep if they detect predator footsteps nearby, but the worms might habituate to the constant bouncing movement as they would if wind were causing the vegetation to move.

So how do you identify this as a Jack Snipe rather than a Common Snipe? Well it is only about half the size (weight 55g v 110g) and its bill is noticeably shorter. It also has a diagnostic black eyebrow in the middle of the broad pale stripe above the eye, sometimes called a split supercilium. The crown is not visible from this angle but Jack Snipes are the only Snipe in the world with a dark centre to its crown. All other Snipes have a pale central crown stripe. Here's a Common Snipe for comparison: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/35032486981/in/photolist

Airborne moisture and a hazy horizon made it difficult to get a sharp and clear image of the Milky Way rising when I visited Cuttagee Beach, Australia, in late April this year.

Despite those challenges, I caught some of the majesty of our home galaxy’s core region as it climbed the sky. A prominent feature of this region of the sky is the Lagoon Nebula, aka M8, an interstellar cloud that shows in my photo as a distinctly pink blob about one-third of the way up from the bottom of the shot. At the bottom right, you can see a reflection of the yellowed glow of the Milky Way’s core area.

Due to how much the hazy conditions dimmed the sky, I pushed my camera’s sensitivity setting, the ISO, up beyond what I normally use for nightscape photos. I shot nine images in succession using my Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera and a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 lens @ f2.2, with an exposure time of 8.0 seconds @ ISO 12800. The nine single shots were then edited in Adobe Lightroom and stacked using Starry Landscape Stacker.

It’s remarkably difficult to capture the full on fury of a storm in a single image. There are so many things happening at once that it becomes hard to focus- from technical aspects such as composition and camera stability in the face of violent and unpredictable gusts to the obvious dangers of shooting coastal scenes on an incoming tide. This is storm Atiyah, which brought 80mph winds and huge seas to the west coast of Britain in early December 2019. Shot about an hour or so from high tide on the rocks below the sea wall at Porthcawl, it was probably the most scared I’ve been in the last 6 years of photography. And despite being confidant that the sea direction and wind was pushing the huge swells just in front of me, 25 years of windsurfing have taught me to have absolute respect for the sheer unpredictability of the sea.

This may not be a pretty landscape but it’s one for all of you Flickr friends who have supported my stream over the years.

After the many green and brown tones of the last pictures, today there is a bit of blue in the stream to make a change for the eyes. The photo of the common toad after spawning is older, this year I missed the spawning week completely because it took place much earlier due to the warmer weather. The fact that these times shift so much is a (new) difficulty when photographing animals/birds and makes planning shots more difficult when you are away from the location.

Hello to all my Flickr friends. It has been a difficult few weeks since my last upload. This was sadly due to losing my brother at the end of November after a long battle with cancer, so please forgive me for not being on Flickr.

I hope that you all had a great Christmas, and i would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the wonderful comments and support over the last 12 mouths.

Best wishes to you all for 2025.

Regards, Ray.

Hurricane season has been especially difficult in my area this year. The beauty of the habitat was destroyed! However, the actual habitat remains. The birds still have food, shelter, and water.

It will not take me 22 years to rebuild the beauty of the habitat again. It's going to be different and will take me some time to get used to. However, barring additional hurricanes, it will be beautiful again by this time next year.

I believe I will add an additional water feature and more snags for perches. Large palm trees will be delivered and planted after Thanksgiving. They will provide shade for the Crepe Myrtle that is loaded with orchids. They can never replace the beautiful Live Oak that was destroyed but it is what it is.

I am grateful, my home was untouched, when the oak fell it went the other way. Although, I now have a lot of repairs to the pond. The pond took a direct hit. All of the Koi managed to remain unharmed. That's another blessing. I am sure they are not extremely happy with the modification at the moment. The bog was completely destroyed. I have people coming to see how to repair and rebuild. The Koi have gotten very large, I believe I will have the pond expanded and they will be very happy.

Most of my little feathered friends have gotten used to the changes. They are all still coming for their fast food. That of course includes what I put out as well as caterpillars they find.

Today's featured backyard beauty is young Phil, a lovely, Red-bellied woodpecker. There are three Red-bellied beauties visiting daily.

Okay, I believe I am rambling so I will simply say, have a great day and happy snapping.

It was rather difficult to find any information about the person who gave their name to Camellia japonica 'Lavinia Maggi' (or just 'Contessa Lavinia Maggi'). It appears that a certain Onofrio Maggi cultivated this camellia some time in the middle of the 19th century. We know this, because the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) awarded it a First Class Certificate (FCC) in 1862. I believe, after some searching, that this was Onofrio Maggi di Gradella (1809 - 1880). This Onofrio had a daughter Lavinia (1862 - 1935), of whom all I know that she was married to two men of the local nobility, Carlo Guaineri and Francesco Dionisi Piomarta, and had one son with her second husband, the marchese Ottavio Dionisi Piomarta. None of these seem to have had any greater historical significance.

A difficult long exposure to achieve with strong wind gusts doing their best to disturb the camera setup!
