Rather a difficult challenge to make a macro of a calendar ... we have a large wall one, small one-day-a-page ones, and everything else is digital! So I decided to play around with a sheet of the 2021 months ... and ended up with a 3cm cube. ;o)

Emerald Damselfly Damselflies are very difficult to ID accurately so we have made a best guess on their names to the best of our ability, we are happy to be corrected by anyone with more knowledge. (Gordon & Maureen)
Damselflies are insects in the sub-order Zygoptera (meaning "paired-wings"). All four wings are near enough equal in size and shape. They are usually small, weakly flying insects that stay close to the water margins or water surface. When at rest, most species hold their wings along the length of their abdomen. The Emerald Damselflies are an exception and usually hold their wings partly open when at rest. They are therefore known as Spreadwings in North America. The eyes are always separated, never touching. The larvae have external plates (lamellae) at the end of the abdomen, which act as accessory gills.
In Great Britain and Ireland there are about 20 species that may be encountered and a few that are now extinct. These species fall into 4 families and 9 genera.

Medium-size, fairly common woodcreeper of tropical lowlands. Favors forest edge, open woodland, hedges with tall trees. Feeds on trunks and larger branches, often spiraling up one trunk and flying low to the next tree. Note the relatively slender and slightly decurved bill, distinct but fine pale streaking on the head and back. Easily confused with larger Ivory-billed Woodcreeper, which is more of a forest bird and has a bigger and straighter bill. (eBird)

Another from the archives. We've seen this interesting woodcreeper from Belize all the way to Ecuador, but the only photo comes from one of our first encounters. Like woodpeckers and treecreepers, woodcreepers cling to the trees and tend to blend right in, making them difficult to see and harder to photograph. This one, though, lived on the grounds of our lodge so I had a couple of opportunities to photograph him.

Figwort Weevil (Cionus scrophulariae.) 4/5 mm long. Difficult to get sharp, blowing in wind. Oh, and they fly!
UPdate: They are ON a 'Cape Figwort' 😮
I think that the black shape is larvae. (bottom right of top left frame).

I shot this photograph using only my hands. I love shooting hand held, but it sure is difficult to shoot macro images as you need to be stable and patience for a long time.
Difficult not to take a photo of this fine building when the light is shining on it. And the rendering and sharpness from the Flexaret is wonderful.

I find it difficult to pass up an opportunity to view Beautiful surroundings while sipping my cocktail of choice. One evening, while visiting Yokohama, Japan, the Mrs. and I discovered a delightful location, and I enjoyed a Vodka Martini; “up” “no vermouth” “shaken well” with a “twist.” Doesn’t get much better. Well, I guess it could… if I was pushing 46 instead of 76 :-)
The Yokohama Port has served as a gateway to the greater Tokyo area and has welcomed countless cruise ships since its opening in 1859 as Japan's first modern international trading port. Lying as many as 11 nautical miles closer to the Pacific than the Tokyo Port, it allows cruise ships to save on pilot charges and fuel, and passengers can spend a greater amount of time for sightseeing.
As the port is conveniently set in the heart of Yokohama, shopping and tourist destinations are a walk away. Since the Yokohama Port is situated at the center of Tokyo Bay, public transportations offer easy access to Tokyo and farther on to Mt. Fuji and Kamakura, which are ideal day trip destinations.

I was stood on Eastbourne Pier with the wind whistling all around making it difficult for me to hold my camera steady.
When I spotted these two figures on the deserted beach. The girl was approximately in her early to mid twenties wearing a flimsy summerlike dress. The male was approximately three times her age, in his early to mid sixties wearing a dirty white raincoat.
The girl hurriedly approached the waters edge and stopped. The male slowly followed her and stopped directly behind her. The girl turned briefly to face him, whether or not words were exchanged I do not know, I was too far away. But in an instant the young girl turned away from him and entered the water. He stood motionless watching as she ventured further and deeper into the water until she disappeared out of sight beneath the crashing waves. He slowly turned and walked away without a backward glance.
What had I just witnessed? The girl had disappeared into the sea and he had disappeared mingling amongst the myriad of people on the crowded promenade. Should I call the Police and tell them what I had just seen, or should I too walk away and disappear?
If I call the Police would they believe me, more to the point, do you believe me.
What would you have done?
All will be revealed tomorrow.

Saltator atripennis
(Black-winged Saltator / Saltador de alas negras)
The Black-winged Saltator is a fairly common resident of humid montane forest on the west slope of the Andes from southern Ecuador to northern Colombia. It is more difficult to see than some other species of saltator, perhaps due to its preference for the canopy and its avoidance of clearings.

Poike, the oldest volcano:
The Poike volcano was the first piece of land that emerged from the sea and, together with subsequent volcanic eruptions, formed the present territory of Easter Island. Its somewhat remote and isolated location and its difficult access make Poike a little-visited place. However, this mysterious territory contains secret corners and ancient legends that invite to discover it calmly and to know better the past of the island.
Poike, the first volcano on the island:
The name of Poike, usually translated by “hill”, seems to come from the Rapanui expression “Po” (night); “ike” (break) which means “place where the night breaks” because it is the first place on the island that receives the first rays of the rising sun.
Indeed, the Poike is located at the eastern end of Easter Island, and is the oldest of the three main volcanoes on the island, next to the Rano Kau and the Ma’unga Terevaka, which originated their formation. It is estimated that this first eruptive center emerged from the sea about 3 million years ago creating the so-called Poike Peninsula, although its activity was maintained until about 300 thousand years ago. Originally this peninsula was an island but later it was joined to the main body of the island, by lava flows coming from the Terevaka and other nearby volcanic centers.
The Poike is now an inactive volcano with a fairly symmetrical cone shape. The main crater has a circular shape and by its resemblance to a halo of sun or moon was called Pua Katiki, although in another version its name would mean “hill that serves to monitor the cattle.” Unlike other craters, this is totally dry and measures around 150 meters in diameter and about 10 meters deep. Inside a small eucalyptus forest grows that crowns the summit like a leafy green plume visible from afar.
From Pua Katiki, where the Poike reaches a maximum height of 460 meters, a wide plain of gentle slope is observed. which covers an area of about 4.5 km from east to west and 3.5 km from north to south. This large area, almost exclusively covered by a type of grass called here hoi (Sporobolus indicus), ends abruptly on 100-meter-high coastal cliffs formed by the continuous erosion of the sea on the Poike peninsula.
_______________________________________________
For some unknown reason, during the period of construction of the large statues, considered the golden age of the island, it is believed that the inhabitants of the Poike peninsula remained separate from the others and hardly participated in the work of carving in the quarries of Rano Raraku.
One proof of its isolation is that only two of the statues found in the Poike are made of the lapilli tuff of the Rano Raraku, while the rest of the statues were made of the white trachyte coming from the Poike deposits.

One of the most difficult photo of my life.
This species is so speed and elusive
My apologies to all my Flickr friends for my absence in this period. I'm in therapy for a cancer in the lung and my health isn't the best since some month.
Luckily for now I haven't metastasis in my body, so I place all my hope in the good success of the therapy. But way is still very long.
My special thanks to all the friends that have show me affection and nearness in this difficult moment. God bless you all.

While perusing some old photos uploaded ten years ago, I was amazed at all the noise I tolerated back in the day. Since I still love this photo, I decided to have another go by painting it and adding some noise reduction. Even though life is obviously a struggle for this Hellebore in the winter, it has a tiny bud which will develop soon into a flower.

Getting more and more difficult to find something to smile about in the era of lock-down and no visitors. This little fellow’s visits, however, bring a sense of joy as he flutters around looking for a tasty morsel.
Bewick’s Wrens are medium-sized wrens with a slender body and a strikingly long tail often held upright. They have slender, long bills that are slightly down-curved.
Bewick’s Wrens are subdued brown-and-gray wrens with a long, brow-like white stripe over the eye. The back and wings are plain brown; underparts gray-white; and the long tail is barred with black and tipped with white spots. Males and females look the same.
Bewick’s Wrens cock their long tails up over their backs, often flicking their tails from side to side or fanning them as they skulk through tangles of branches and leaves searching for insects. During breeding season, males sing vigorously from prominent perches.
Bewick’s Wrens favor dry bushy areas, chaparral, scrub, thickets in open country, and open woodlands near rivers and streams. They are at home in gardens, residential areas, and parks in cities and suburbs.

Notoriously difficult subjects these (or at least that's my experience), simply because they are so incredibly active & never seem to stop still. I was lucky here, as this one paused for a few seconds to preen, so I was able to bag a couple of shots.

Medium Egret (Ardea intermedia) - 20240325-04
Medium Egret: A stocky egret that is larger than Eastern Cattle and Little Egrets, but smaller than the Great Egret. Often confusing and difficult to identify, this bird is truly intermediate between potential confusion species. Things to look for include a yellow bill that is shorter than Great Egret but longer than Eastern Cattle Egret, a relatively rounded head, and shorter legs than Great Egret, approaching Eastern Cattle Egret. Like most egret species, associates with all types of water bodies including wet fields, often flocking with other egrets.
Great Egret: Large, lanky, long-necked white heron. Size and black legs help separate from other egrets. Widespread and fairly common across the globe. Bill color varies across range: always yellow in the Americas, black in breeding season elsewhere. Occurs in any shallow wetland, including ponds, marshes, and tidal mudflats. Slowly stalks prey in shallow water. Often seen singly, but sometimes gathers in large numbers where food is plentiful. Breeds in colonies, frequently mixed with other egrets and herons. (eBird)
---------------
Almost the first bird that we saw when we got to the wetland was the Medium Egret (here pictured with a Great Egret), a rare vagrant to Dubai! Thrilled to get this photo of the two passing each other, clearly demonstrating the massive size difference between the two. Both birds occur regularly in Singapore, so I had spent the previous week trying to differentiate them when seeing them from a distance.

With this Haiku poem I have paired it with Sinéad O'Connor's song "Nothing Compares 2 U". On listening to her sing this again recently after many years, the words below came to me. So this is part two of this work if you like.

Sinéad O'Connor - December 1966 - July 2023.
I would like to express my condolences to Sinéad O'Conner's family at this deeply difficult and sad time of Sinéad's passing. I share with those people who loved her music and indomitable spirit a heartfelt sadness that her bright spirit is not here to give us joy any longer. But I hope that her soul has now found the peace that she so longed for. May she rest in peace with her God. Her legacy will continue to comfort and delight us and we will remain forever grateful that this unique woman shared her talent and life with us. Thank you, dear Sinéad.
