A very difficult species to find because of their nomadic life style constantly looking for a bumper crop of pine cones. Regardless of the time of year when a bumper crop is located they will nest and raise a brood. It is not uncommon to find them singing and building nests in the middle of winter. They have been known to nest as far south as Georgia in their errant wanderings searching for that good cone crop. If we do find a good flock of them on a given year because of a good supply of food there is no guarantee they will return again another year.
Eight different forms of crossbills have been identified and all share the same colouring but differ in body size, bill shapes and sizes but they rarely interbreed.
This female is foraging in the salt on the shoulder of a parking lot.
As usual, I was caught with the wrong lens when we came across this flittery little group of Silvereyes at the Tinchi Tamba Wetlands. So this is a bit cropped. They were buzzing in and out of the Casuarinas in the wetlands and very hard to pin down.
They are one of those birds I remember from my childhood when my wonderful Dad who left us far to young would explain and open my eyes to the world.
The females, in general, are difficult to see, we could photograph this one because I needed to evacuate. It is a critical moment for them and it makes it easier for us to capture it. Image obtained in the Charcos del Rio Grande. Quesa (Valencia) Spain
Many people who have never been to NY state find it difficult to believe that any of it could look like this.
"A warm smile is the universal language of kindness." - William Arthur Ward (American motivational writer).
The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 28th of December is "smiley in selective colour", a theme chosen because this is the last theme of this year. Where does the time go? Now this theme sounds fairly easy in comparison to some we have had this year, but whereas some of those more difficult themes have been easy for me, this one was far more challenging. Why? Because I don't have a single smiley in the house, and I have no idea where to get one from. So, I decided the only solution was to draw my own, which I did with my beloved Derwent Studio pencils. I did that on purpose partially because I needed a smiley, but also, because the theme is selective colour, I wanted to show the name of the colours I used in the photo in the black and white portion of the photo. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile like my smiley!
As this is the last "Smile on Saturday" before the New Year, I should just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the group a very happy New Year. May the year ahead be filled with happiness and joy for you all.

Medium-sized woodpecker with bold black-and-white barring on back and a cream-colored belly. A patch of yellow on the lower belly can be difficult to see. Male has red crown and yellow nape. Female lacks red crown. Distinctive in range, but hybridizes with Red-crowned Woodpecker; hybrids best left unidentified. Found in open woodland, edges, and gardens.

Very pleased to see some Linnets appearing in the garden.
I have seen a male but so far only managed to photograph this female.
In this difficult time when nothing is as it usually is, watching the birds in the garden carrying on their normal lives is a huge boost.

Thank you very much for your comments and faves, regretfully, I am finding it increasingly difficult to reply to your comments, because of my very limited time on the internet, due to constant power interruptions in South Africa. I do read and appreciate every one of them, however! Thanks again!!
A juvenile, size 02-03mm, from the same place as where I found the springtails from 21-07-2019. This one found in a handful of mud...
Difficult birds to identify unless they are heard and this one never made a sound. I was thinking Least Flycatcher but the eye ring doesn't seem bold enough.
A difficult bird to get a clean shot, was quite lucky to sight two of them - a pair - on some nice perches. It belongs to the large cuckoo family, but non-parasitic, i.e. it doesn't lay its eggs in other birds nests. The bird is easily recognizable by the bluish eye from which it derives its name. I had seen this bird dart off into trees where there were other birds nests several times, but I am not sure if it is a nest raider. Incidentally the bird is only found in South India and Sri Lanka.
Thanks in advance for your views and / or feedback. Much appreciated.

Sometimes it is very difficult to try and capture the true beauty of your subject and the personality. I spent a day with her as I was fascinated by her and her beauty ! She was very coquette and seemed to know just how to attract her mate. I loved the time I spent with her and hope we will see some off spring shortly !!
Wishing you all a lovely and blessed evening !!
Another difficult bird to see and photograph... Always in the darkness of the tropical forest.

It is difficult to believe that you are in central Bangkok when you enter this station. It’s like time has stood still since days gone by.
And they still keep these amazing benches that are synonymous with State Railway of Thailand.
As there are big plans for Makkasan’s development there will certainly be changes in the future.
During my last trip in China, I tried to take as much portrait shots I could. However, it's always a little bit difficult to ask, and when people agree, you don't want to disturb them too much, so you have to be super effective and you can only take 2-3 pictures before saying "thank you" and letting them go. It was a very good exercise anyway ...
Here is a violonist that was playing in the little alley of Ciqikou, the ancient town of Chongqing ...
Gale force winds and intermittent rain, not a pleasant walk around RSPB Snettisham but managed to get some photos. Difficult condtions even with a tripod.
It is very difficult to cope with this feeling, not knowing where you belong and not being able to internalize the place you live in is one of the heaviest burdens, it is not good for mental health, it is very difficult to struggle alone, but the nature and animals that surround me are always good companions for me.
If you want to see the statue up close, you can visit it from here. Who knows, maybe it will awaken completely different feelings in you.

The body shape is there and the feather groupings are roughed in. There is a lot of finer work to do there.
Long billed birds are typically carved in three pieces: body, head/neck, and bill.
The body and head were carved out of Tupelo Wood after the profiles were cut with a band saw. Tupelo is light, very fine grained, and ideal for working with micro motor tools for shaping. The bill piece was cut out from Australian Leopard Wood. It is a straight grained, very dense and tough wood which makes it ideal for the most fragile part of the carving.
It is a difficult wood to work with using knives or power tools with bits. It will be shaped with a power sanding tool. The mandibles will be separated with a wood burner. it will be permanently attached to the head.once the body is complete. The next steps will be painting and creating a base.
Past couple of years was incredibly difficult for many of us, yet, as a human race, together we have marched on.
On the years ahead we will face many more challenges, but again, as a human race we will move forward.
The irony is that many in the privileged world is denying the opportunity they have in hand. Whereas, the underprivileged can only wait and watch and suffer.
Many of us will have to pay the price for their sins, perhaps not in this lifetime but the next. Many of them are already paying the price in this lifetime for the sins of ours.
From all of this, we will move on, at least for now. In all of this we forgot that Knowledge and Wisdom are not the same. Today we all know everything, yet be none the wiser.
No one has seen tomorrow, but we all know it will come. I wish we all could do something better today such that we have a better tomorrow.
I wish all of you a Very Happy New Year of 2022. Lets act together, however small it is, to make a better tomorrow.
With this I will post the last image of this year, which I was extremely fortunate to witness and capture. I have already posted a few of them before, but this one is the culmination of exposure blending of 51 images (17 images each of -1, 0, +1 EV).
Once again, Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.
This was last weekend before we got locked down in the UK and not a moment too soon. Some people were taking it as an extra bank holiday.
Having walked through a few forests they are really difficult things to photograph. There seems a massive difference between what your eye sees and what works well in a photograph. Most of the photographs end up a whole bunch of confusing brown and greens.
Difficult to accept that in a country as wealthy as ours that some actually seek out places such as this for shelter.
We don’t get many Northern Pintails in Southern Florida, so I spent a lot of time with a pair that is here visiting. A very pretty duck that I’ve found very difficult to get in flight because they don’t fly often and it’s very difficult to tell when they are about to do so. They give a lot of false tells, the male looking around as if he’s getting takeoff clearance but then goes back to feeding. One tip is to pay more attention to the female. The drake will go where she goes. (Anas acuta) (Sony a1M2, 400mm lens, f/2.8, 1/3200 second, ISO 2500)

An awesome and fascinating bird. While this bird can't walk on water it can walk under it. Its range is in the mountains of Western North and Central America. It is an elevational migrant only moving down a stream course if it becomes completely frozen over. They have feathered white eyelids and they build their nest in very difficult places for predators to access, sometimes even behind a waterfall. There are 5 subspecies of dippers found in the world and they are most closely related to the Thrushes.
It was very difficult for me to make this collab with a broken mouse. But I will never forget this day, I haven’t laughed as much as I did yesterday for a long time :D
I organized a small circus du soleil for the girls while we were taken this pic
Suki, thank you for not being afraid to say “hi” to me that day. You are the kindest girl I know. And thanks to you I stopped being afraid to communicate with people in SL! And if not you, I wouldn’t have met Juli, whom I seem to have known for many, many years, despite the fact that we only recently met. Sometimes I'm shocked how much we have common things in our lives.
don't forget to check Suki's and l o v e l y's versions <3

Always sad news to hear that one of our heritage railway's reluctantly have to cease trading. Hopefully this can get sorted and we can see scenes like GWR Collett 5643 leaving the Berwyn Station again

This sunrise was out of this world, I could hardly believe how stunning it was! It was such a needed treat after many weeks of doing little to no photography as well as some difficult weeks with my health. I am very thankful that after a 13 hour drive, 5 of which was in dangerous fog, we were able to make it in safely by the Lord's grace and then wake up to see this! The sky was colorful in all directions and it was not even possible to photograph all of it. I hope to see many more sunrises like this over the week!
Ptarmigan is a master of camouflage. It grows a new feathers to suit each season, so it is very difficult to detect in nature.
Christmas can be a difficult time for many people. There is such a big build up for it in many countries beforehand which makes it inevitable that there will be some disappointments. It can be greeted with mixed emotions, bringing to mind past or present sorrows as well as joys. Often at this time of year there have been major disasters around the world and today there are difficult conflicts and there's a lot of illness. Whilst thanking all my flickr friends for their friendship, comments and favours I have thoughts for those having to face very difficult things, I hope for at least moments of peace or joy to everyone this Christmas.
It will be difficult for you to believe that this is one of the most militarized zone in the world ! Where two nuclear power nations are locked in decades old conflict ! Here in Gurez valley India - Pakistan looks eye ball to eye ball !
"Sirji you are within enemy range , they are watching your movement . After eight pm do not venture out , Ambush laaga hai !" Hand finds the cold of steel ; seeking vain reassurance !
"Every bullet has a name written on it ; if your name is there, it will find you ! We can retaliate but we can't save you Sirji !" Life is too fragile in conflict zone !
They saw me! At a distance even difficult with 400mm, this semi wild herd at Hackwood Park in Basingstoke. The deer are in a huge enclosure with its own woodland and lake. Often it is impossible to see them but they came out into the sun for Christmas! We had a wonderful day but today we are back to high winds and heavy rain!!
