My seldom used, but appreciated, German-English dictionary.
120 Pictures in 2020: #75 Mustard yellow
I took many photos of the massive Webster's Dictionary that has been in my family for a long time. It was a challenging subject because of its shape, because of the lens I had on the camera and because of my preconceived ideas of what the photo should look like. The photo I have chosen for today was a surprise result of shooting every angle of the book I could compose. I hope it portrays some of the characteristics of the book in a somewhat abstract form.
For the Small Print group - the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary - 16 volumes reduced to two with four tiny pages per page. Not quite on group theme perhaps, but hey, that's some small print!

I guess it's time to Mark this downā
Listening to āThatās What Living is to Meā performed by Jimmy Buffett on his album, āLive in Anguilla.ā The first time I heard this song decades ago, the reference to Twain made me smile.
I made up my mind to become an engineer when I was about 9 or 10 years aged. I didnāt know what discipline, but I knew I was going to be an engineer. I have little tolerance for someone in college who tells me that they donāt know what they want to choose for their major. I tell them, āSounds like youāre majoring in wasting your parentsā money!ā
Had I not decided to be an engineer, I would have majored in literature or something that would allow me to write. I used to be fairly proficient at writing despite that when I was at A&M in the 80s, engineering majors didnāt even have to take English.
When I was a senior first lieutenant and junior captain at White Sands Missile Range, I wound up leading a technical writing/publishing section at an Army Technical Command. Other than assignments involved with actual soldiers, that was one of my more enjoyable assignments. I had a team of technical writers, editors, and graphic arts civilians and contractors working for me. Luckily, I was proficient at the writing and editing part of my job.
I can thank my parents for my limited proficiency at the English language and writing skills. I remember when I was in elementary school, my parents bought a large chalkboard on wheels. Every weeknight, the chalkboard was wheeled into the living room and I was drilled for two hours on English and Math. Thatās what great parents do, they teach their kids at home to make up for average teaching in the classroom.
Iāll be the first to admit that my spelling isnāt always the best. I still have the little Oxford mini dictionary that I carried with me to ROTC Advanced Camp and throughout my Army career. Even on deployments.
āI have no respect for a man who can spell a word only one way.ā ā Mark Twain
Dictionary, Thesaurus, Crossword Dictionary. Everyday recipe books, butterfly and gardening books. Old magazines and I see a plastic bag with some stored seeds. The folders hold special recipes from family and friends. The large orange book is my cooking bible by Stephanie Alexander. Precious.
Thanks to Edi 07 for the beautiful texture!
BTW: Every time I looked at this photo I thought that "coffie" looked somehow wrong. Now I realised that it IS wrong... It's "coffee" of course. Stupid me! :-(
Ah, perhaps THE most cherished possession of mine...
As you might know, most Japanese students have an electronic dictionary but I had adamantly refused to get one, just because I was thinking I should eat better food if I had enough money to get a dictionary. But when I found this one, a TRIlingual (and more!) dictionary, I surenderred unconditionally and never regretted once.
