The open flower part measured petal tip to petal tip across its widest diameter is only 3/8" wide!

From the tips of the petals to the back of the flower where the stem begins is only 5/16" deep!

The whole shooting match including the spire is only 6/8" long!

.

Some of these photographs appear to be close-ups of regular-sized flowers; they are not. All of these photos are micro (macro) photographs of the super-tiny blooms that blossom on common weeds.

Weed flowers...wild flowers...whichever appellation you want to bestow on them nonetheless these almost microscopic beauties are the flowers that bloom on the weeds in my yard.

Many people also assume that these flowers are, for example, squash or zucchini-sized flowers, or that they are flowers 1" in diameter or larger and are perhaps on stems a foot tall or so. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Most of these flowers when measured petal tip to petal tip at their widest diameters measure 1/4" (6mm) across…or less...the entire bloom is that small. And the average stem height is only a few inches tall, if that.

The smallest weed flower I've shot yet is a small ring of flowers that measured less than 1/32" (.7mm) in diameter which encircled a spire which measured about 1/64" (0.3mm) in diameter.

For some photos I’ve included references to common objects such as the head of a paper match, or the head of a pin, which dwarfs some of these tiny flowers! On some others I’ve listed a description of the actual size of each object in the photo.

So far I've made over 700 photographs of over 50 varieties of weed flowers.

I hope that seeing the variety, beauty, and intricate complexity of this small world astonishes and pleases you as much as it has me.

Thanks for looking.

Hibiscus mutabilis, is an old-fashioned perennial or shrub hibiscus known as the "Confederate Rose" or the cotton rosemallow, is a plant noted for its flowers. Flowers are double and are 4 to 6 inches in diameter; they open white turn pink, and change to deep red by evening. Bloom season usually lasts from summer through fall. Propagation by cuttings root easiest in early spring, but cuttings can be taken at almost any time. When it does not freeze, the Confederate rose can reach heights of 12 to 15 feet with a woody trunk; however, a multi-trunk bush 6 to 8 ft tall is more typical. Once a very common plant throughout the South, Confederate rose is an interesting and attractive plant that grows in full sun or partial shade, and prefers rich, well-drained soil. Who wouldn’t want a flower like this? Although there are many forms, with either single or double flowers, the classic version looks like this. Showy blooms, 4 to 6 in wide, appear in fall. They open white, fade to pink as they age, and finally end up red. You’ll often see all three colors on the same plant. Cool, yes? Native to China, Confederate rose isn’t a rose, but a species of hibiscus. According to legend, it gets its name from the flowers soaking up the blood shed on Confederate battlefields. Felder Rushing, co-author of "Passalong Plants" – arguably the most influential book on Southern gardening ever published –recalls that ladies in Mobile, Alabama gave these flowers to Confederate soldiers returning home from the war. (At 160 years old, Felder is still the world’s oldest lady.) Some folks call the plant “cotton rose” because its leaves resemble cotton foliage and its round flower buds remind them of cotton bolls. This makes sense, because cotton and Confederate rose both belong to the mallow family, the Malvaceae. With a diameter of 100 meters, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully steerable radio telescopes on earth. Since operations started in 1972, the technology has been continually improved (i.e. new surface for the antenna-dish, better reception of high-quality data, extremely low noise electronics) making it one of the most advanced modern telescopes worldwide.

The telescope is employed to observe pulsars, cold gas- and dust clusters, the sites of star formation, jets of matter emitted by black holes and the nuclei (centres) of distant far-off galaxies.

Effelsberg is an important part of the worldwide network of radio telescopes. The combination of different telescopes in interferometric mode makes possible to obtain the sharpest images of the universe.

From Wikipedia:

The "Mark I" telescope, now known as the Lovell Telescope, was the largest steerable dish radio telescope in the world, 76.2 metres (250 ft) in diameter, when it was completed in 1957;[15] it is now the third largest, after the Green Bank and Effelsberg telescopes.[16] Part of the gun turret mechanisms from the battleships HMS Revenge and Royal Sovereign were reused in the motor system for the telescope.[17] The telescope became operational in mid-1957, just in time for the launch of Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. The telescope was the only one in the world able to track Sputnik's booster rocket by radar;[18] first locating it just before midnight on 12 October 1957.[19][20]

In the following years, the telescope was used to track a variety of space probes. Between 11 March and 12 June 1960, it tracked the Pioneer 5 probe. The telescope was also used to send commands to the probe, including the one to separate the probe from its carrier rocket and the ones to turn on the more powerful transmitter when the probe was eight million miles away. It also received data from the probe, being the only telescope in the world capable of doing so at the time.[21] In February 1966, Jodrell Bank tracked the USSR unmanned moon lander Luna 9 and listened in on its facsimile transmission of photographs from the moon's surface. The photos were sent to the British press and published before the Soviets themselves had made the photos public.[22]

In 1969, the Soviet Union's Luna 15 was also tracked. A recording of the moment when Jodrell Bank's scientists observed the mission was released on 3 July 2009.[23]

With the personal support of Sir Bernard Lovell, the telescope also tracked Russian satellites. Satellite and space probe observations were shared with the US Department of Defense satellite tracking research and development activity at Project Space Track.

Despite the publicity surrounding the telescope's tracking of space probes, this only took up a fraction of its observing time, with the remainder used for scientific observations. These include using radar to measure the distance to the Moon and to Venus;[24][25] observations of astrophysical masers around star-forming regions and giant stars;[26] observations of pulsars (including the discovery of millisecond pulsars[27] and the first pulsar in a globular cluster);[28] observations of quasars and gravitational lenses (including the detection of the first gravitational lens[29] and the first einstein ring).[30] The telescope has also been used for SETI observations.[31]

The Jodrell Bank Observatory (originally the Jodrell Bank Experimental Station, then the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories from 1966 to 1999; /ˈdʒɒdrəl/) is a British observatory that hosts a number of radio telescopes, and is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.

The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes located at the observatory; the Mark II, as well as 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is also the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The site of the observatory, which includes the Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, is located in the civil parish of Lower Withington (the rest being in Goostrey civil parish), near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. It is reached from the A535. An excellent view of the telescope can be seen by travelling by train, as the main line between Manchester and Crewe passes right by the site, with Goostrey station being only a short distance away.

These are 24" diameter fabric expansion joints with an overall face to face dimension of 12". Each expansion joint weighs 300 lb. Installed in the inlet and exhaust piping of a hot air blower, they can withstand temperatures of up to 850F. These expansion joints were fabricated in three layers that consisted of aluminized fiberglass, ceramic fiber, and silica treated fabrics. The flanges were fabricated from carbon steel with special hex nuts welded to the inside of the bolt holes. The stud bolts are in place to assure correct alignment of the bolts to the flange bolt holes. Visual inspection and trial fitting of the stud bolts were performed to assure quality and performance.

This 2.5-kilometer diameter crater observed by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been significantly altered from the usual bowl-shaped appearance we associate with craters. Material has covered significant portions of the ejecta and filled in the crater. This fill material has since been subject to erosion — like boulders weathering out of the slopes — and the crater rim is also highly irregular.

This crater is located in Elysium Planitia, an area dominated by volcanic processes. It is likely that the crater fill material is volcanic in origin, and possible that the rim was etched by lava, either flowing into the crater or spilling over after the crater filled completely. However, there are also signs of erosion by wind, like the parallel ridges in the rim breaches and between high-standing regions of the crater fill. It is likely that the current appearance of this crater is due to a combination of surface processes.

Goodyear Corsair FG-1D (G-FGID)

When the Chance Vought FG-1D Corsair was introduced in 1940 it boasted the most powerful engine along with the largest diameter propeller of any fighter aircraft in history. The result of this engine and propeller combination was the first fighter to exceed 400mph. Corsairs were built right up to 1952, giving the type the honour of having the longest production run of any American piston-engined fighter.

The first service engagement for the Corsair was with the US Marine Corps operating from makeshift land bases across the Pacific, and it was not until later that she was operated from aircraft carriers initially with the British Fleet Air Arm. The Corsair proved to be a formidable air superiority fighter during World War II when she was the scourge of the skies across the Pacific, and continued to deliver sterling service in later years during the Korean War.

Our Corsair was built under licence by the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation at their facility in Akron, Ohio and allocated Bu No 88297. She was accepted by the US Navy on 9th April 1945 and delivered a mere two days later. She was initially dispatched to Guam in the Pacific, being allocated to the Aircraft Pool Airwing 2. The next piece of her known history has her at a Repair Depot in the Philippines, possibly Samar, for repairs in October 1945 and following this was returned ‘State-side’. Our Corsair then spent a number of years being allocated to various US Naval Air Reserve squadrons as well as varying periods of storage until she was eventually put up for disposal in March 1956 with a total of 1652 flying hours on the airframe. She was purchased by ALU-MET Smelters in January 1959 and languished in their yard until being rescued a year later by legendary stunt-pilot Frank Tallman. In his book The Great Planes, Frank Tallman calls her his all-time favourite aircraft.

Frank Tallman parted with the Corsair in 1966, and she passed through a number of other civilian owners until joining The Fighter Collection fleet in 1986.

The Fighter Collection’s Corsair is an extremely original example of the type as she has never been restored and has the distinction of being one of the few still flying with fabric wings.

Our Corsair is painted in the colours of a British Fleet Air Arm machine, KD345 of 1850 Squadron during December 1945, when they were embarked on HMS Vengeance of the British Pacific Fleet.

North American TF-51D Mustang 44-84847, Miss Velma, (N251RJ)

Built too late to see combat service in World War Two, P-51D 44-84847 was one of the last Mustangs constructed at North American Aviation’s Dallas, Texas, plant. Details of her post war service career are limited, but there is photographic evidence, from September 1951, of her serving with the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Kimpo, South Korea, during the Korean War.

By late 1951 the 45th TRS were replacing their aging Mustangs with RF-80 Shooting Star jets, and so 44-84847 was shipped back the US to serve with the Air National Guard until around 1956. Around this time she slips off the radar until January 1999 when she re-appears in North Dakota as a restoration project. The airframe joined The Fighter Collection fleet the following year and was moved to Chino, California for a full restoration with the decision made to modify her to two-seat TF-51D configuration.

The restoration culminated in a first flight in May 2007 with Steve Hinton at the controls. Following this our Mustang was painted in the 55th Fighter Group scheme of Capt Frank Birtciel’s P-51D 44-14561, Miss Velma. Following the successful completion of her flight testing, Miss Velma was fitted with external drop tanks and flew across the Atlantic to the UK, where she arrived at Duxford on the 4th July 2007

NAA P-51D “Ferocious Frankie”

The P-51 was the most successful long-range fighter escort of World War II, but it was not an instant success. Designed for the British in only 120 days to meet their requirement to purchase more fighters, the first Mustangs were built with Allison engines; while remarkable at low altitudes, these variants were considered under-powered and disappointing at higher altitudes. Happily, in late 1942 the aircraft was transformed when, in the UK, Rolls Royce Merlin engines were tested in place of the Allison. The Merlin, as used in the Spitfire, was then license-built by Packard in the USA and in 1943 was installed in the P-51B & C models. This near perfect marriage of engine and platform made the 1944 P-51D, with its bubble canopy and six-guns, one of the most iconic and potent fighters of all time.

The P-51D’s range was an incredible 2,055m (3,327km), thanks to its huge fuel capacity of 1,000 litres internally and 815 litres in drop tanks. Equally impressive was a level maximum speed of 437mph (703kph) at 25,000 feet, a max diving speed of 505mph (818kph) and a service ceiling of 41,900 feet (12,800m).

The OFMC Mustang was built at the North American Aviation Factory at Inglewood, California and accepted by the USAAF on 27/02/1945. One month later it was sent to the 8th Air Force, via Newark and Liverpool docks, serving at Leiston in Suffolk among other stations. The aircraft stayed in England for only 11 months before returning to Newark in January 1946. Briefly kept in storage, in January 1947 it was sent to the Royal Canadian Air Force, operating from Suffield, Alberta. In 1953 with only total 433 flying hours it was completely overhauled in Winnipeg and with only an additional 81 hours time thereafter, was put into outside storage in Carberry Manitoba. Happily, in 1957, it was sold into private hands and registered as N6340T. The aircraft was bought for $5,400 in 1962 with a total of 511 airframe hours. Flying in the Unlimited Race at Reno in 1974, the effectively stock (original) aircraft finished second with an average speed of 384mph.

In April 1980 the aircraft flew across the Atlantic to new owners, The Fighter Collection. Re-sprayed, it became known as Candyman / Moose, with the name on one side of the fuselage and the Moose’s head on the other. The Mustang was first displayed in the UK at Biggin Hill in 1981, flown by Ray Hanna, the OFMC’s founder.

In 1989, after filming in ‘Memphis Belle’, the aircraft was given a complete overhaul by The Fighter Collection at Duxford. The airframe was remarkably free of corrosion and damage, but a full strip down and component overhaul was undertaken. An overhauled original flying panel was installed. The rear fuel tank in the fuselage was removed and a wartime style modification made to fit a ‘dickey’ seat. This ‘mod’ in 1944 allowed Eisenhower to survey the D-day beaches from the back of a Mustang. A special 1760hp Merlin engine currently powers the aircraft.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXb G-ASJV

• Aircraft Type: Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXb

• Operator: The Old Flying Machine Company

• Year of Manufacture: 1943

• Powered by: Rolls-Royce Merlin

• Colour Scheme: 222 Sqn. RAF 1943

Air tested by the legendary Alex Henshaw in early August 1943, the illustrious history of this much loved aircraft then continued service with 222 Sqn. MH434 was was flown in combat by South African pilot Flt. Lt. Henry Lardner-Burke, DFC, with seven and a half kills, three damaged. On the 27th August 1943 in the St Omar area over France, Lardner-Burke shot down a Focke-Wulf FW-190 and damaged a second during a mission to escort USAAF B-17 bombers. On the 5th September 1943 Lardner-Burke and MH434 shot down another FW-190 in the Nieuport area, and on the 8th September 1943 claimed a half share in the downing of a Messerschmitt Bf-109G in Northern France. Later flown by Flt. Sgt. (later Wing Co) Bill Burge who declared it to be ‘the perfect Spitfire’. Post war service was seen with both the Dutch and Belgian air forces before finally returning home to civilian life. Ray Hanna began his outstanding partnership with MH434 in 1970 and it has been operated by his OFMCo since 1983. She remains the jewel in the company’s crown.

The outer shell of the fruit, its exocarp, is firm (softens during ripening), typically 4-6 cm in diameter, and contains astringent phytochemicals which discourage infestation by insects, fungi, plant viruses and bacteria. The same phytochemicals are pigments giving the exocarp its characteristic purple color, including phenolic acids. These pigments have antioxidant properties which afford the fruit further protection from ultraviolet radiation and free radicals generated during photosynthesis. Isolation of exocarp pigments has permitted their identity to be revealed as xanthones, mainly garcinol and mangostin[1], which, as phenolics, make the exocarp highly astringent and inedible.

Cutting through the shell, one finds edible flesh, botanically defined as an aril, shaped like a peeled tangerine but bright white, about 3-5 cm in diameter, nested in a deep red outer pod. Depending on the fruit size and ripeness, there might be seeds in the aril segments. The seeds, however, are not palatable unless roasted. The number of aril pods is directly related to the number of petals on the bottom of the pericarp. On average, a mangosteen has 5 aril segments (round up figure). The plant does not start producing fruit until around 15 years old, which is somewhat an impediment to cultivation.

The vertical centrifuge is made up of the screen which diameter range from 700 to 1,000 mm , the rotor body (including the blade), transmission, body, lubrication system, etc.

Application of Vertical Centrifuge

The vertical centrifuge is fit for material dehydration, generally used for coal, salt and other materials.

Working Principle of Vertical Centrifuge

Wet materials are feed into the mouth of centrifuge, then are accelerated by the rotated distribution cone and move rapidly towards the space between screen and rotor. With the centrifugal force, the smaller particles of material get closed to the screen surface, liquid and part of the particle size of less than 0.5mm of material get across the material space and screen gap, then are thrown out of the screen, the larger particles of materials soon slipped into spiral nesting mouth along the screw blade with the action of gravity and centrifugal force fine material attached to the screen surface are discharged by the scraper centrifuge through blade action, while the liquid through the screen and fine materials are thrown into the water tank then outflow through the drain, so as to achieve a solid-liquid separation.

Technical Performance Parameters of Vertical Centrifuge

Installation and Testing of Vertical Centrifuge

When the centrifuge is assembled completely in the manufactory, the test should be carried out in air operations. It should be sent out to the users in the form of machine after it is up to the requirements, the users can directly follow the steps to install the equipment when they get receipt of it.

1. Installation Step

1) Check whether the basis of surface is level, if it is uneven, adjust the leveling pad. Check the ground pin-hole size and pore size of the centre. Check whether the basis of elevation to meet the requirements.

2) Mount the shock absorber to the ground pin holes, install the nut first but not tightened until the machine is in the right place, then solid-tight.

3) Hoisting the machine in the place, tighten anchor bolts, tighten the upper pairs of nuts before the measurement with the caliper pad diameter, it is required that the diameter of compact size should be increased 2~3mm than the first fasten one.

2. Test Step

1) Checked before testing items

a. All bolts connections should be tighten.

b. There is no equipments which have effects on the machine operation.

c. Make sure the pulley can be moved with both hands so that the machine can be rotated flexibly with non-stuck and abnormal noise.

d. Make the belt hang right.

e. Indicator within the oil tank should be located in the groove between the upper and lower limits.

2) Commissioning and inspection of the project

Meet the above requirements, follow these steps, and start running in the air for 8 hours.

a. Open the oil pump motor.

b. Observe the oil supply situation, make sure everything is ok, open the console.

c. While there is no abnormal noise, stable operation, measure the amplitude of the centrifuges in the horizontal plane and make sure that it is less than 0.3mm.

d. Measure the oil temperature every 30 minutes, ensure the oil temperature rising is no more than environmental temperature-30℃.

3) Loading Test

When all functioning of the machine working in the air is normal, then gradually feeding at the same time pay attention to the functioning of the device, while there is no abnormal phenomenon, the handling capacity can be increased to 150~200t/h, the handling capacity of the material easily dehydrated can be larger, difficult to dehydration material handling capacity can be smaller. Add enough materials, it may take the measurement as the following items, when all meet the requirements, the equipment can be put into use.

a. Checked by commissioning and inspection items

b. Measuring capacity

c. Moisture measurement products

d. Measurement original compound, the content of grain size of less than 0.5mm

e. Measurement of centrifugal fluid solids

f. Measuring power consumption

Operation and Maintenance of Vertical Centrifuge

1. Operation

1) Pre-drive checks

a. Check the machine whether in full state and the connectors are loosening.

b. Check whether the material plug the machine and the oil spill out of the pipeline.

c. Moving the pulley, check whether the machine is resisted and the belt tensioning situation.

d. Check whether the oil level inside the tank between the upper and lower limits of the oil indicator, enable the pipeline junction leakage are prohibited.

2) Driving

a. Activate the pump motor, to observe the oil flow table. After the oil flow through 1~2 minutes, then start the main motor.

b. When the machine is running in the normal condition, begin to feed, the charging capacity should be gradually increased.

3) Parking

a. Stop feeding, get the closure of the host after 2~3 minutes.

b. Shut main motor down after half a minute, and then close the pump motor.

2. Maintenance

Centrifuge normal maintenance plays an important role in preventing accidents and injury in the weight of link components in the device’s using, and the systems should be required to perform.

1) Lined lid is easy to wear and tear, open the lid or observe the lid abrasion situation from the observation hole, if the abrasion is serious, it should be replaced promptly.

2) Distribution cone is mounted on the top of the rotor body, contacted with material directly and easy to wear and tear. Every time when you change the screen and scraper, pay attention to check the distribution of the remaining tapered wall thickness, if it is too thin, take replacement timely.

3) Screen is the key part of the centrifuge, it is forbidden that there is no wire, wood, bolts and debris in the machine while it is used. For a long time using, if a little screen surface was damage, it allowed to be repaired by welding, but if the gap in the screen is as large as 0.75mm wear or screen seriously worn, the screen should be replaced. Likewise, if the mesh repair welding area is too large, re-do before the use of dynamic balance.

4) Spiral scraper, it should be paid attention to adjust the gap between blade and the screen surface when it is working, usually 0.3~1.5mm. If the gap is too large, it can mount the adjustment pads on the top of the rotor body underside for each additional pad, the gap decreased 0.34mm. If the adjustment of all cushion mount to the lower part, the gap remains large, replace the blade. It should pay attention to the pairs of containers while changing scraper, mount the weight of two scraper into a symmetrical position to keep the rotor body balancing performance. After replacement of the scraper, the machine should be conduct and test run in the air operation. If the rotor vibration is too large, it would have to do the rotor body balancing.

5)Export the protection lining, materials get through the lower scraper with the influence of centrifugal force, the material is left out in the protection of lining, and then fall until the belt exit cone machine, it should pay attention to the protection liner wear circumstances from the hole observed when it is used. When serious damage happened, replace it timely.

6) The export cone is at bottom of the machine, when material falls, the cone inner surface is often worn in use, and the lining should be checked regularly. If there is some damage, it must be promptly replaced.

7) The differential is a driving part of the machine, it should be aware of the lubrication conditions when it is used. It should pay attention to whether the oil is spilled, oil flow table is oil flow and the differential pulley-side and the upper part of bell-shaped cast-side sealing department have leaked oil. Enable that there is not any unusual noise in the working differential.

8) Lubrication system. It should be always checked the oil spill situation, pressure gauge and oil flow sheets. Oil filters in the filter and the oil tank strainer should be periodically cleaned or replaced. The oil level in the fuel tank must be within the upper and the lower limits shown in the table.

9) Cleaning the materials inside the machine regularly, rinsing the materials between the hood and lining surplus with red bell-shaped water, cleaning the appearance of the machines and the places around the equipment, make sure it is working in good condition.
