My 'new' lens, front view with 77mm diameter (!!) UV filter. The 'official' name: Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX OS APO RF...I just call him Siggy :)

Slightly beaten up but gotten at a phenomenal price. I think the reason WHY I found it for less is because (aside from being discontinued) most people (including the seller) don't know that this lens, with OS (optical stabilization), focuses on ALL Nikon bodies despite lacking Sigma's HyperSonic Motor (HSM). The OS works pretty well, with two modes: (1) vertical and horizontal for static subjects and (2) vertical blur reduction, great for panning and other situations when horizontal movement is ok.

It is pretty heavy and conspicuous, but manageable without a tripod. I was cautious at first because of all the reviews claiming very slow autofocus speed, but I have found it to be just fine (and not that loud)...I think most people wrongly compare it both to fast wider angle lenses and its very expensive $1200+ counterparts. I'll concede it is a bit slow in 'low light', as so many reviews claim...but...what do you expect with a long focal length? ;)

So...sharpness is great from 80-300 and almost always acceptable even at 400mm. To get any better, you'd have to go pro with a Canon or Nikon prime. I greatly prefer Sigma's old skin blend to the new sparkly composite that their new lenses are recognized for, but that's a personal preference. It was peeling when it arrived and the heat has made it worse, but so it goes.

Sorry for the rant; I love reviewing new equipment! Questions are welcome too xD

Cup holders are great and the headrest is the best. No neck cramps with those. Mesh bottom let you put your sandals in there while you are cruising down the river. The plastic is very thick, which reduces the chance for punctures or rips. This one has a Boston valve which is quite large, but it is designed to let air in and not out. The handles and cup holders are sturdy and also helpful. The webbing under the seat also helps you feel secure and helps you keep any extra gear in the tube with you (as long as the gear is waterproof or OK to get wet, of course).

This precious leafless angraecoid is quite rare in cultivation. It is native to Uganda, Rwanda, Príncipe Island, Cameroon and Gabon where it grows as an epiphyte on forest undergrowth in dense upland forest between 1600-1950m elevation.

This impressive specimen is grown in a private collection (not my plant) under intermediate conditions: average daytime temperature in summer 80-83°F/26-28°C, average year-round night temperature 55°F/13°C with bright light in winter (2000fc) and low light in summer (800-1000fc).

With a diameter of 100 meters, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully steerable radio telescopes on earth. Since operations started in 1972, the technology has been continually improved (i.e. new surface for the antenna-dish, better reception of high-quality data, extremely low noise electronics) making it one of the most advanced modern telescopes worldwide.

The telescope is employed to observe pulsars, cold gas- and dust clusters, the sites of star formation, jets of matter emitted by black holes and the nuclei (centres) of distant far-off galaxies.

Effelsberg is an important part of the worldwide network of radio telescopes. The combination of different telescopes in interferometric mode makes possible to obtain the sharpest images of the universe.

Vallis Schröteri, Latin for Schroter's Valley, is a sinuous valley located on a rise of continental ground called the Aristarchus plateau. At the southern edge of the plateau are the craters Aristarchus and Herodotus. North is to the left in this image. Move cursor over image for notes.

This is the largest sinuous rille on the Moon. It begins at a 3.7 mile diameter crater located 15.5 miles to the north of Herodotus. (The start of the rille has been termed the "Cobra's Head" due to its resemblance to a snake.) From the crater it follows a meandering path, first to the north, then setting a course toward the northeast, before finally bending back to the south until it reaches a half-mile high precipice at the edge of the Oceanus Procellarum. The rille has a maximum width of about 6.2 miles, then gradually narrows to less than a half mile near its terminus. The origins of this rile are believed to be volcanic. The interior floor has been resurfaced and is very level.

Constellation is a meditation on the breadth and wonder of Alaskan wildlife, inspired by the dynamism and formal elegance of Athabascan fish traps.

Suspended in the main lobby of the new Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center are dozens of fine cables holding hundreds of radiant golden sculptures depicting native fauna.

Compositionally, the sculpture articulates a virtual core sample taken through a particularly rich area ecosystem. Crustaceans and fish varieties comprise the lower zones of the artwork. Above these are successive overlapping layers of shoreline and arboreal species, and above these a broad mix of avian life. Made of translucent cast resin, these components “capture the light” both optically and metaphorically.

Underneath this implied column, inlaid bronze leaves create a corona in the floor. The result is a visual cue, an invitation to stand beneath the artwork and gaze up through a glowing natural vortex.

If our Earth were a blue marble, about one inch in diameter, our moon would be about the size of a pea, about one quarter inch in diameter, and it would orbit our blue planet at a distance of about 30 inches...two and a half feet away from our one-inch marble.

Using this scale (in which one inch equals about 8,000 miles), our Sun would be a big ball slightly larger than 9 feet in diameter, and our little blue marble Earth would circle this ball at an average distance of about 970 feet, or more than three football fields.

With our 9-foot ball as the Sun at its center, our Solar System would be a circle a little more than 20 miles in diameter. It would only be 11 miles across if we just included the orbit of Neptune, the farthest planet; however, we must include the Kuiper Belt, a circling field of objects beyond the orbits of the eight planets in our system (recall that, in 2006, Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet; it is the largest object in the Kuiper Belt).

Rafflesia, Its diameter can reach 1.4 meters long. It is the largest flower in the world. When Rafflesia blooms, it smells like carrion, and it is pollinated by attracting toilet flies and beetles. Rafflesia flower buds need to wait 2-3 months to bloom... photos from Malaysian friend "Fion Kor"

The open flower part measured petal tip to petal tip across its widest diameter is only 3/8" wide!

From the tips of the petals to the back of the flower where the stem begins is only 5/16" deep!

The whole shooting match including the spire is only 6/8" long!

.

Some of these photographs appear to be close-ups of regular-sized flowers; they are not. All of these photos are micro (macro) photographs of the super-tiny blooms that blossom on common weeds.

Weed flowers...wild flowers...whichever appellation you want to bestow on them nonetheless these almost microscopic beauties are the flowers that bloom on the weeds in my yard.

Many people also assume that these flowers are, for example, squash or zucchini-sized flowers, or that they are flowers 1" in diameter or larger and are perhaps on stems a foot tall or so. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Most of these flowers when measured petal tip to petal tip at their widest diameters measure 1/4" (6mm) across…or less...the entire bloom is that small. And the average stem height is only a few inches tall, if that.

The smallest weed flower I've shot yet is a small ring of flowers that measured less than 1/32" (.7mm) in diameter which encircled a spire which measured about 1/64" (0.3mm) in diameter.

For some photos I’ve included references to common objects such as the head of a paper match, or the head of a pin, which dwarfs some of these tiny flowers! On some others I’ve listed a description of the actual size of each object in the photo.

So far I've made over 700 photographs of over 50 varieties of weed flowers.

I hope that seeing the variety, beauty, and intricate complexity of this small world astonishes and pleases you as much as it has me.

Thanks for looking.
