Vijayadashami, also known as Dashahara, Dussehra, Dashain (in Nepal), Navratri or Durgotsav is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated in various forms, across India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

The name Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara literally means remover of ten referring to Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana. The day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons Mahishasur. The name Vijayadashami is also derived from the Sanskrit words "Vijaya-dashmi" literally meaning the victory on the dashmi (Dashmi being the tenth lunar day of the Hindu calendar month).

As the name suggests Vijayadashmi or Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar which corresponds to September or October of the Gregorian calendar. The first nine days are celebrated as Maha Navratri or Sharada Navratri (the most important Navratri) and culminates on the tenth day as Dasara.

In India, the harvest season begins at this time and so the Mother Goddess is invoked to start the new harvest season and reactivate the vigor and fertility of the soil. This is done through religious performances and rituals which are thought to invoke cosmic forces that rejuvenate the soil. Many people of the Hindu faith observe through social gatherings and food offerings to the gods at home and in temples throughout Nepal and India.

Thankful - for his devotion, encouragement, delivery, love <3

I spent this past weekend working on a team for the "Guerilla Film Festival" A 48 hour mission to write, create, edit and submit a film., Once you start your 48 hrs, the organization gives you a genre and a line that must be used in the film. Our genre was Classic Sci-Fi, and our line was " I don't want to be part of any Geinea Pigging" We finished the filming last night at 3:30 in the morning, and the producer finished editing and uploading the movie this afternoon with about an hour left in our 48. All of the films have been uploaded to youtube and will be available for viewing in a day or two., Once I have a link, I will share for all to see.

My job was Slate Man, and crew member, Not an actor. Slate man slaps the little board with "scene 1, act 2", and crew member does all of the off camera work in preparing props and spaces for the scenes. I can't wait to share the film,, Look for another pic tomorrow with a link.

In the church of St James. And in Polish św. Jakuba, or more formal "Bazylika archikatedralna św. Jakuba w Szczecinie" - and it's a cathedral. The church is now catholic, but for a long period it was evangelical. It is a piece of what in German is known as Backsteinsgotik, built in the Gothic style in the 13th century. It was badly damaged in the 17th century, and again during the second world war when all altars and interior artwork were destroyed, but also the western tower - hence the modern expression there.

Despite his size, this little kid was very enthusiastic about the entire ordeal.

The stupa in Bodnath is very important for many bouddhist, Tamang, Tibetan, or from a different tribe. They come here and turn around the stupa, again and again, always clockwise. It's called Kora. Kora may be performed while spinning prayer wheels, chanting mantra, counting mala, or repeatedly prostrating oneself, like this lady on the photo.

The beauty of the images moves me to contemplation, as a meadow delights the eyes and subtly infuses the soul with the glory of God.

So our mission,

to bring a melody,

Ringin’ voices sing sweet harmony

For you here’s a song, to make your day brighter.

One that will last, you long thru troubled days.

Giving your heart the light to brighten.

All of the dark that falls in your way

You need devotion.

bless the children

Deliverance from the fruits of evil

In everyone’s life,

there’s a need to be happy.

Let the sun shine, a smile your way.

Open your heart, feel a touch of devotion.

Maybe this song, will help uplift your day.

Make a better way

You need devotion

"A man can’t plow a field by turning it over in his mind."

- old Welsh saying

~~~
"A man can’t plow a field just by thinking about it, he must go out to the field and get to work. Yet if he is fully present to the work and acts with mindfulness and loving attention — that is, if he brings his whole self along — then even as he turns over the rich soil beneath his plow, he turns it over in his mind and heart as well. The act of tilling the soil becomes an act of tilling the soul."
- from "Turning the Soil of Soul: Ritual as Celebration"
~~~

At first, I only wanted to find some small thing that represented the meaning of "devotion" in my life. Devotion gives me a sense of empowerment, a sense of connection and gratitude that keeps me going. But then I asked myself: what is it that empowers my devotion? What helps me to "do devotion better"?

Just yesterday, I finished a piece on ritual as celebration that has gone up over on the Patheos CUUPS blog, Nature's Path. In my life, learning and curiosity empower my acts of devotion. Knowledge shapes my practice as a I search and research for those threads that weave us into the world.

My Word of the Day altar is set up on the windowsill next to my desk, and there on my desk was a perfect example: Catherine Bell's Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions. When we see the diversity available to us, we're empowered to explore beyond the simple forms that we've inherited by default.
