The wonderful Parque Tony Gallardo is devoted to 'local' plants. There's a smallish waterway and lots of marvellous plants and trees. Of course they attract manifold birds among which this pair of Glossy Ibises. Fantastic.

The park was named for the sculpting artist and socialist politician Antonio Gallardo Navarro (1929-1996), who was also a defender of the native culture of the Canary Islands.

I love Halloween. A single day devoted to celebrating darkness and scary things. But that day is preceded by a month-long build-up when all sorts of ghostly yard displays begin to pop up in the neighborhood. Some of them show wonderful creativity while others look more like someone going through the motions. As I drive (or walk) this time of year my eye is constantly being pulled this way and that taking in the displays. I often stop to photograph the most imaginative. My personal preference is pseudo realism but without the blood and gore often seen when people get carried away. But for me the best of the season is not decorated yards and houses. It's those houses that exhibit a sense of eerie darkness all year round. These places need no decorations. Their presence is felt the moment you see them. I'm drawn to places like this and never seem to outgrown the fascination. Autumn days greatly enhance the look of these structures; as leaves fly and shadows length, it takes very little imagination to sense fear and trepidation. This house is one of my local favorites and it never disappoints.

Photographed on Tequila Bay, private estate.

You are going to feel so much love and devotion that it is going to scare you.

You aren’t used to being the object of so much tenderness; and maybe you even think you don’t deserve it.

But you do.

You know you do.

Embrace it with open arms and let it wash over you.

* The Mind’s Journal*

Long experience has taught me that people who do not like geraniums have something morally unsound about them. Sooner or later you will find them out; you will discover that they drink, or steal books, or speak sharply to cats. Never trust a man or a woman who is not passionately devoted to geraniums.

The funerary chapel contains prefigurations of the Virgin and Themes of Resurrection and Judgment. Like the narthexes, the program of the parekklesion is divided between the Virgin and Christ. Here, however, the overriding theme is Salvation, befitting a funeral chapel. The western domed bay is devoted to the Virgin; the upper walls represent Old Testament prefigurations of the Virgin, emphasizing her role in Salvation. The eastern bay is devoted to the Last Judgment. The complex program of the chapel culminates in the conch of the apse, where the Anastasis (Harrowing of Hell) is represented, flanked by scenes of resurrection. Unlike the narthexes and the naos, the parekkelsion is decorated with frescoes

CHORA MONASTERY

In the northwest part of the historical center of Constantinople and in a small distance from the Byzantine gate of Edirne, Chora Monastery is located. Its name comes from the use of the word “chora” (the lands/dwelling place) in the mosaic of Christ as “Chora of the Living” and in the mosaic of Panagia as “Chora of the Uncontainable” in the interior of the church.

From the old monastic complex, only the katholikon remains till today. Furthermore, we are not sure about its dedication to Christ or Panagia, or even to both of them.

Equally doubtful remains the foundation time of the monastery, since not only the years of Justinian I (527-565) have been suggested, but also the years of Heraclius (610-641). However, there is certainty that during the 12th century a grand church is being built, while in the beginning of the 14th century it is widely renovated. This was the extended renovation program, funded by the logothetes tou genikou, Theodore Metochites, who associated his name to the monument, thus sealing the greatest period in all of its history. The construction of the double narthex and the south chapel, which were decorated with mosaics and frescoes respectively, is attributed to Metochites. These works comprise the greatest expression of the Palaiologan art during the artistically rich reign of Andronicus II (1282-1328) and they are still admired by all.

On the day of the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the monastery was one of the first religious monuments to undergo the plunder. Later, at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, Chora was transformed into a mosque named Kariye.

The restoration of the monument, the reveal but also the cleaning of the mosaics was made in two periods, the first one in the beginning and the second in the mid-20th century.

The Chora Monastery operated as a museum (Kariye Müzesi) from 1945 to 2020, when it was converted back into a mosque by decision of the Turkish authorities.

Lee, it seemed, had been keeping himself busy over the last few months. Well, depending upon your definition of “busy” he had anyway. In his case he’d devoted much of his time to box sets and peanut flavour M&Ms. To think that he was once the scourge of the local five a side football circuit with those razor sharp flailing elbows and darting runs down the left wing. When we cycled from Roscoff to Chinon, he sailed up steep hillsides in the Loire Valley as if they weren’t there. In Scotland he marched to the top of the Devil’s Staircase without pausing for breath. I was pretty fit at the time too, but I could never keep up with him when a slope reared up in front of us. We nicknamed him “Stannah” in deference to his supreme climbing capabilities, after a well known manufacturer of stairlifts. Today, all of that seemed a distant memory as he stared bleakly ahead at the lofty summit of Ger Tor. He looked at us as if he needed to summon up the product after which he’d been named to help him to the top. We hadn't told him the worst of it yet. Ger Tor was only the halfway point.

By the time we arrived at the granite boulders on top of Ger Tor, we were all huffing and puffing to varying degrees. Far below us lay Tavy Cleave, cutting through the valley in lazy white curves. The sunlight would never reach the river at this time of day. We'd have to be here a lot earlier to make it sparkle through our lenses. But we had another view in mind, and for that we needed to push on up to Hare Tor, which now straddled the landscape like a colossus to the north. Dave had hatched a plan that held much promise, and today was the only day upon which we could mount our drive for the high ground. Come here on Tuesday or Wednesday and we’d probably be Swiss cheese within minutes. The military use the area for exercise on dates that are published on their website, and they like to practise with live ammunition. When you see a sign that tells you not to pick up any interesting looking objects because they might just explode and take your head off, it kind of focuses your attention. That would be a bad hair day for certain - if you had any hair left, that is. But on Monday the red flags weren’t flying. We could wander around to our hearts’ content without being shot at.

After a brief, chocolate fuelled rest on top of Ger Tor, I was ready to press on. I left Dave to break the news to Lee that we needed to stand on top of “that one over there” to get our shots this evening, so I didn’t see the wounded expression on his face. After all, it was Dave’s idea to do this. I just agreed that it looked like a very good plan as long as we didn’t mind a bit of oxygen deficit and accepted that we’d probably get caught in the odd spell of hard rain while out on open ground along the way. For a solid half mile we pushed on across boggy terrain, past curious black bullocks that stopped grazing to stare at the three unwise men who were out on the moor on this showery Monday evening. We’d already been soaked at least twice today and were getting used to it. But there was no denying the fact that this was a testing hike. A good two miles each way - or is that a bad two miles? - with a couple of sharp inclines and a flattish squelchy section in between. He who dares will probably feel a bit worn out later on, but then again, with all of those passing showers that had filled the day from end to end, maybe it would be worth the walk.

So many times you put in a huge amount of effort with no guarantee of a reward. How many times have we made that journey, walked up that hill or stood on that clifftop to watch the light get snuffed out at the vital moment? But on those rare occasions, just often enough to keep us hoping, we get that moment of light we all dream of. This was one of those happy days when the plan came together and we fired our shutters in triumph. These are the ones we remember for a long time afterwards and we all knew it as we grinned and watched the fleeting light racing across the wilderness. Just a few seconds and it was gone. There was a long walk back to the car, but it was all downhill, and we were smiling. Even Lee, who seemed to have put the trauma of the endless uphill trudge behind him. He'd earned his M&Ms today.

Symbolism.

Cyclamen symbolises the empathetic, devoted heart, and was therefore planted beside old monasteries, ribats [ Islamic monasteries ] , a sort of fortress........ and churchyards in the countries around the Mediterranean. In Japan, the cyclamen is the holy flower of love.

I was lucky to be given two plants by a friend to plant.

Thousands of candles are thrown into the blazing fire.

The whole event is a strange Mise-en-scène in which religious piety coexists with aesthetics of dirt and neglect.

What is prominently present is a cynical practice of constant fundraising.

A devoted Priestess of Death, she walks where the living dare not, guided by whispers of bones and echoes of forgotten souls.

Originally a chapel stood here devoted to St Nicholas and the Virgin but in the later Middle Ages it was transformed into this huge church. The tower, though, dates form 1711/14. Two previous structures had been destroyed, the first by a fierce storm. The second fell down spontaneously possibly through the use of inferior construction materials. The ochre-yellow is the original color of the timbers of the tower applied during a restoration in the early 1980s.

" The sun is gone and the flowers rot

Words are spaces between us

And I should have been drown in the rivers I found of token lost

And I should have been down when you made me insecure

So break me down if it makes you feel right

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

You can break me down if it takes all your might

'Cause I'm so much more that meets the eye

And I'm the one you can never trust

'Cause wounds are ways to reveal us

And yeah, I could have tried and devoted my life to both of us

But what a waste of my time when the world we had was yours

So break me down if it makes you feel right

(So break me down)

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

(So break me down)

You can break me down if it takes all your might

'Cause I am so much more than all your lies

Hate me, break me down

(So break me down)

Down! (So break me down)

So break me down if it makes you feel right

(So break me down)

And hate me now if it keeps you alright

(So break me down)

You can break me down if it takes all your might

'Cause I am so much more that meets the eye ... "

The legacy of the Rev Gilbert White surrounds his beloved village of Selborne. This groundbreaking 18th century parson devoted much of his life to the study of the flora and fauna of the countryside of his home, just as the Industrial Revolution began to change Britain forever.

Much of the gentle landscape around Selborne is managed traditionally. Mixed woodlands, open commons and wild flower meadows form a landscape that can't be so different from the days Rev White strolled these same ancient footpaths.

Returning northwards from the wooded slopes of Noar Hill and the end of my muggy, humid seven mile walk in sight. Selborne Hill on the left and the village hidden in the trees on the right.

The still, humid conditions and the wildlife friendly environment meant that there were more butterflies and bugs than I've ever seen on one walk. I wish I'd had more time to stand and stare than pound along, but I had a train to catch from Basingstoke.

I found more wildlife there. An hour to kill at 5pm so I retreated to the seating outside the station and within minutes three rats had run within feet of me. Two other people near me were so intent on their phones they never noticed.

A rather dodgy sky replacement I'm afraid; the real sky, not helped by a wild-fire on nearby MOD land, was the colour of the sky next to the horizon on the right.

The eyelids are heavy.

A thought-find has burst in,

Tearing the veil of sleep.

The rivers are dry.

But the fishing boat

Again is full of poems.

Life has changed its channel.

Only dreams of the past.

Became a piece of art

Forgotten ferry.

An artificial construct devoted to deities known only to itself, searching for new disciples to convert

A mother loon sticks very close to her baby when not hunting for food. On this magical July morning in 2019 I was treated to a private show as this female and her mate devoted 100% of their time feeding and protecting their lone chick. Common loon adults will tend to their young for the first three months of its life before it becomes independent. My epic, loony adventure is chronicled in an article and video on my website at www.terifranzenphotography.com/the-call-of-the-loons/

A wonderful collab with this man again, Thank you Torsten.

His version

On display Here

"I'm devoted to destruction

A full dosage of detrimental dysfunction

I'm dying slow but the devil tryna rush me

See I'm a fool for pain, I'm a dummy

Might cut my head off right after I slit my throat

Tongue kiss a shark, got jealous bitches up in the boat

Eating peanut butter and jelly fishes on toast

And if I get stung I get stoked, might choke

Like I chewed a chunk of charcoal

Naked in the North Pole

That's why my heart cold, full of sorrow, the lost soul

And only Lord knows when I'm coming to the crossroads

So I don't fear sh! t but tomorrow"
