Silent Devices perform live opening for The Rumble Strips at The Musician, Leicester, Leicestershire, UK, 2009-03-19
Concrete device near Dungeness to listen for aircraft approaching the south coast of UK from the Channel. This was being tested before radar was developed.
OMG, this device is even more dangerous than the first! I had to beat a guy in a Tom Cruise mask to within an inch of his life (later, I finished him) to get it. And what do I plan to do with it? Not sure yet. Maybe I’ll bury it for future generations to find and UNLEASH on each other. Or maybe I’ll stand it up on my desk and stare longingly at it.

he workshop on dyeing T-shirts with pine bark is designed with the aim of preserving and transferring knowledge about the traditional skill of dyeing fishing nets with natural pigment, which will be applied in this case to dyeing white cotton T-shirts. This process was widespread and common along the Croatian coast until the mid-20th century when the arrival of synthetic nets in our markets diminished its importance and gradually led to its oblivion.
Greasing of nets served a dual purpose: to impregnate the nets and make them more resistant to the effects of the sea and salt, but also to dye them in a dark red color to make them as inconspicuous and effective as possible in the sea. The process we will reconstruct in the workshop begins with grinding pine bark with wooden hammers and collecting and sieving the ground bark to extract the fine dust, which is then boiled in seawater. After boiling, the mixture is filtered through fine fabric, and the dye is ready for application.

Inspired by Oblique Strategies, a series of card prompts to overcome creative blocks, Abandon Normal Devices invited AND artists from the last decade to devise a new collection of strategies reflecting on our altered world and the way we are now required to exist and behave.
The newly commissioned artworks by Rafaël Rozendaal are a meditation on technology, time and observation. The hyper reduction of horizons in fluro pastels are the artist’s impressions of distant views – as seen through our devices – intensified and transmuted by technology.
Lithographically printed on high-quality 400gsm uncoated stock and sized at 70 x 98mm, they will fit seamlessly with existing Oblique Strategies packs. Cards can be purchased as singles* or as a limited edition complete series of 10, which are packaged in a bespoke 175gsm G.F Smith envelope. Domestic and global shipping is included in the price.
