Well, today was a happy day for me. My iPad Mini Retina finally arrived no thanks to the hijinks of UPS Canada. I'm hoping to replace my laptop for a lot of photo editing with this little gizmo.

The FuMG 41/42 Mammut was a long-range, phased array, early warning radar built by Germany in the latter days of World War II. Developed by the GEMA company, it consisted of six or eight Freya antenna arrays, switched together and coupled to two Freya devices. The arrays were fixed and the beam could be electronically steered on a 100° arc in front and behind the antenna, leaving 80° blind arcs on each side. It was the world's first phased array radar and was able to detect targets flying at an altitude of 8,000m at a range of 300km.

The British intelligence codename, "hoarding", was probably related to the shape of the large array. As late in the war as April 20th, 1945, intelligence reports reflected the erroneous opinion that only development prototypes existed but no operational stations had been fielded

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today urged West Virginia drivers to use hands-free devices while driving and commended the West Virginia Division of Highways for raising awareness of our state's new law which makes it a crime to text or talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving.

Students from George Washington High School attended the press conference and signed the Safe Driver's Pledge.

As part of the governor's "Drive. Hands-Free." public safety campaign, motorists traveling through the Mountain State today will now see the message "Drive. Hands-Free. Don't Text and Drive." on all interstate and turnpike message boards between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

"In a moment of distraction, life can change in an instant. Please, don't let your last words be a text," said Gov. Tomblin. "Young drivers, talk to your parents. And parents, talk to your kids. Sit down together and take my safe driver's pledge. Together, we will make our roads safer."

Gov. Tomblin's safe driver pledge is available at www.governor.wv.gov. West Virginia is one of many states using highway signs today to encourage cell phone users to make a lifelong commitment to safety by pledging to not text and drive.

"Texting and driving is a deadly combination and, thanks to the leadership of Governor Tomblin and the West Virginia Legislature, it is now against the law," said West Virginia Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox. "We have been working diligently to remind the traveling public of its dangers in an effort to help curb this epidemic."

As of July 1, 2012 it is a primary driving offense to text while driving and a secondary driving offense to talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving in West Virginia. Beginning July 1, 2013, talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving becomes a primary offense-enabling police officers to pull you over and ticket you for the infraction.

Gov. Markell kicked off the statewide expansion of Motivate the First State, an online health-and-fitness-tracking portal that offers 139 activities to log, with remarks April 22 at the Dover YMCA and a walk with 50 first-graders from nearby South Dover Elementary School.

Gov. Markell said expanding Motivate the First State from mainly Sussex County and the YMCA network will help to push Delaware toward being a healthier state. About two-thirds of Delaware adults are an unhealthy weight, either obese or overweight, and about half of our state’s residents don’t regular physical activity. “Government can’t solve this problem. It just can’t,” the Governor said. “In the end, it comes down to each one of us.”

In the 2015 pilot, 2,600 Delawareans logged nearly 100,00 activities, 3.8 million minutes of physical activities and generated $39,948 for the YMCA of Delaware, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and Special Olympics Delaware. “This campaign allows all Delawareans, including those with special needs and limited movement, to help others by logging their healthy behaviors,” DHSS Secretary Rita Landgraf said. Healthy behaviors include drinking water, brushing teeth, volunteering, gardening, applying sunscreen, walking, cycling, yoga and using a wheelchair.

“How do we make being physically active more fun?” said Jason Danner, campaign director. “Physical activity is a gigantic part of what all three of these organizations do. We are eager to include more corporate partners so that we can reach more Delawareans.”

Delaware is the first state to have a statewide activity-tracking portal, said Rick Sutton, founder and CEO of Plus3.com, which powers the website. The more time and activities you log at www.MotivatetheFirstState.com, the more micro-payments go to three statewide health-related charities. An individual’s Motivate the First State account also can be synced to Garmin and fitbit devices.

To join Motivate the First State either as an individual or as a team, go to www.MotivatetheFirstState.com

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

San Francisco, CA - October 2017

Both of my grandfathers are now sadly departed, but both were and are my heroes.

Before WWII my paternal grandfather, Sam Bellamy, played proffessional football (soccer to our American cousins) for Birmingham City football club, having been born, and grown up next to their St Andrews stadium. (Which led to my father, brother, myself and my nephew all being ardent 'Blues' fans.)

He joined the British Army in 1939, and was present in Portsmouth for the return of the British Expiditionary Force (BEF) from Dunkirk in 1940, and was then posted to North Africa, and worked as a bomb-disposal/booby-trap disposal expert, mainly disarming Italian booby traps on captured amunition.

It was while his unit was attempting to disarm one such device, that a bomb went off, and i believe killed some of my Grandfathers comrades, and also wounded him in the process.

He took many of these photographs while recovering at a US Red Cross hospital (before the USA had entered the war) in Jeruselum.

The rest of the war was then spent delivering supplies to the Russians through Persia (Iran) and to India for the war against Japan.

My Maternal Grandfather, was James 'Steve' Blackburn, who was from Sunderland in the north east of England, and started the war in the REME (Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers) and after being posted to North Africa, he volunteered for the LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) who are widely regarded as the first modern 'Elite' unit, and who spent many months of the war behind enemy lines on recce missions, as well as delivering the fledgling SAS (Special Air Service) to their targets sometimes thousands of miles behine enemy lines.

The LRDG's motto was 'Non Vi Sed Arte', which means 'Not by Strength, by Guile'

The early recruitment drive for the LRDG read thus "Only men who do not mind a hard life, with scanty food, little water and lots of discomfort, men who possess stamina and initiative, need apply." I think that says it all about the type of men that went on to spend more time behind enemy lines than any other 'regular' unit.

The German general Rommel, said of the LRDG and SAS "They caused us more damage than any other British unit of equal strength."

I had to Photograph all of these, as they are in a fragile condition at my fathers house, and i wouldnt dare place them in a scanner for fear of the book falling apart.

I use my computer, my iPhone, my mouse and my hand every day!

An interference jamming device, this unit is designed to block enemy aircraft, or ground based launcher units from getting target lock on the Goliath. Capable of jamming up to three targets simultaneously, but due to the sheer size of the Goliath, this unit will struggle to create an effective block when dealing with more than three.

Called a TripSaver, the electrical device works like a circuit breaker in a home with the added benefit of automatically reenergizing a power line within seconds to keep the lights on for customers.

This is a photograph is one of a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2013 which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 14th August 2013 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands. The race offers prizes in all categories. Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. Due to the slightly late start and the fading light it was difficult to capture as many photographs as normal and we ended up with many blurs and mistakes. This photograph belongs to a larger set of photographs from the race event which are accessible at this link [http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157635070120285/]

Event Management and Race Timing were provided by PRECISION TIMING: See their website at [www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer] and their Facebook Page at [www.facebook.com/davidprecisiontiming?fref=ts]

The Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the final major race in summer road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh.

Overall Race Summary

Participants: There was about 470 participants which is a significant increase on previous years.

Weather: This was a warm humid night. There was little or no breeze which made for very favourable conditions for 5KM racing.

Course: The race begins near the Church and ino the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a magnificent scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 800M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish at the GAA grounds.

Location Map: See the links below: goo.gl/maps/J6HUl (Google Satellite Imagery)

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments provided for participants in the GAA hall afterwards.

Ishoro Honda's 1962 film King Kong vs Godzilla is the first to tell the story of an encounter between these two monsters.

Godzilla has been frozen in an iceberg but is awoken through nuclear heat. At the same time an evil Japanese busines man transports King Kong to Japan from the Pacific island where he has been considered a monkey god.

The two monsters meet twice, King Kong eventually saving Japan by drowning Godzilla before escaping to sea, swimming towards his beloved island.

The film's special effects have a certain period charm, as have the various communications devices used in this film.

"If you are looking for something different with a great story line, I would suggest reading these books. They are very well written and draw the reader into the story, possibly against their will." -- Rachel Baker, Old Musty Books

"Without sensationalized graphic violence or the glamorized pornography of pulp romance novels, Ms. Malcohn achieves what good science fiction/fantasy is intended to do. She has created a believable world, with characters with whom you can empathize, in a good story that is well and eloquently told." -- David Roth, Examiner

"I give this one an enthusiastic recommendation. Interesting characters, interesting moral quandary, and lots of responses to it. I was expecting one of two easy answers, but Malcohn quite bravely avoided them both....Well worth full paperback price, and I'm quite glad to have it for free." -- Bard Bloom, on LiveJournal

"This is a dark series with a hidden deeper meaning. Malcohn's books are a look at the world we live in. This is not an easy read but it is an important read.... Reading the Deviations series is time well spent." -- Debra, at Goodreads

"Rather than stuff judgments of right and wrong down the reader's throat, Malcohn asks questions, and leads the reader to find his own answers. Further, she develops the ideas of right and wrong from her characters' points of view, and the points of view of her various cultures. ... Get the whole series, and allot a large chunk of time for reading them, because once you pick them up you won't want to put them down." -- Windborn, at HubPages

"[T]he social commentary that is woven throughout the story is thought provoking and makes you reevaluate what you think you know about yourself and society at large." -- Lakisha S, at Manybooks

"If you're looking for a tale that clearly defines good guys and bad guys, this is not your read. But if you're looking for a story filled with immense heart, rich character development, vivid world building and -oh, by the way- is nothing short of great, old fashioned storytelling, you cannot do better than Malcohn's 'Deviations' series." -- K.L. Nappier, at Manybooks

"The series is really good. While reading, I could see myself in the story. It was almost as if I could feel, smell, and touch the other characters. That has not happened for me in a novel in quiet a while." -- David Bennett, at Smashwords

"Read this book. Do read this book....There are echoes here of the impact of modern imperialism in the 'real' world. Malcohn's World is also, of course, our own post-imperial, war-torn world in a era of dawning austerity." -- apidi, at Manybooks

"Love this book [Covenant] and the entire series." -- Ian, at, Manybooks

"Loved this series. Really takes you to a different place. Not for the faint of heart. Once I read the first one....I had to read the rest!" -- holbritter, at Manybooks

"The world is rich, believable and consistent. The situation is brimming with potential. And I, for one, have never read anything quite like it." -- Scott T. Barnes, editor, New Myths

VAâs annual Brain Trust summit offers platform for innovations in brain health and head trauma

From a software platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual reality device that assists Veterans with behavioral health issues, 15 competitors pitched a diversity of ideas during demo day at the Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit, hosted by VA on May 18 in Boston. The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. âWe have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,â said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. âToday, the impossible gets challenged.âAfter reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. âWe feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,â said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. âThe King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. âAs a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimerâs disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsonâs disease. â  During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VAâs Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a âState of the Scienceâ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. An Advanced Photon Source employee uses a rod to explain how electrons in the APS ring pass through radio-frequency cavities to receive a boost of power. A series of these cavities is used to accelerate the electrons to nearly the speed of light before they are sent through insertion devices to produce X-ray light.

Three M.A.D. (Magnetic Acoustic Devices) from HPV Technologies (www.getmad.us), during a demo for military, law enforcement, and government tech experts from the US and abroad, at Edwards Air Force Base in Palmdale (Sep 1, 2005). The devices are capable of broadcasting a highly focused, "laser-like" beam of sound in such a way that it is intelligible for a mile or more. The event was organized by the LA Sherriff's Department, which is considering using the devices for civil unrest and disaster communications. A donated device will be shipped to authorities in Mississippi for those purposes this week.

The 12th running of the Fields of Athenry 10km took place on St. Stephen's Day, December 26th 2013 at 11:00 in Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland. Due to the very icy and frosty conditions for health and safety considerations the race start was delayed by a half an hour and started at the slightly later time of 11:30. The winter sun began to rise high into the sky and the earlier icy roads thawed sufficiently to allow for road racing and avoid a potential abandonment of the event. This worked out perfectly and the conditions were perfect for road racing. This follows on from the near apocalyptic rain conditions for the race last year.

This is one of the leading 10KM road races in Ireland. It is hard to believe that the race is "only" twelve years old. It's superb organisation, atmosphere, and great race history gives it the characteristic of a race that is many years older. The credit for this goes to the wonderful athletics club in Athenry AC and the Race Director for 2013 Frank Burke and his team of volunteers. The attention to every detail in the race which this year attracted over 1,200 participants means that the race has earned it's stripes as one of the leading road races in Ireland. This year the race coupled with Athenry Tidy Towns Committee. A contribution from the proceeds from this year's race will be made to support the work of the Tidy Town Committee.

The race started at the Railway station and then took in a loop of the famous fields of Athenry where it turns left and begins it's return to the town, passing the soccer club, over the railway lines, and finishing under the medival arch in Athenry town for a fittingly atmospheric finish to the race. Race HQ is in the Presentation College in Athenry. Post race showers, prize giving ceremony, and refreshments were provided in the College after the race.

We have a very extensive set of photographs from this year's event. The link to the full set of photographs on this Flickr photostream is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/11553763974/. There are some photographs of the race start and photographs of the race finish from the 1st across the line until the 55 minutes finish time.

Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
