In Development, she works with black and white archival images of several pieces of architecture in Downtown Los Angeles from the 19th and 20th centuries. Yim also visits these same sites to photograph them with the same angles in color. She composites these images together and enhances the feel of the transformation through digital manipulation. Physical changes in buildings and signs, overlapping vehicles of different times, conflicts of differently dressed crowds of people and modern day colors pushing through the black and white all highlight the rapid changes over time and serve as a recording of this developing society. Her photographs show how this generation has situated themselves in these same spaces and adapted their functionality, exploring thoughtless or neglectful attitudes towards urban redevelopment. She reveals this ambivalent struggle to preserve or to let go of the past, careful not to force a single truthful viewpoint on the treatment of heritage and culture, requesting her viewers to be mindful of changing times and define their own attitudes towards it.
