August 3, 2019. Malden, MA.
A rally led by residents of 33 Park St. fighting massive rent hikes from their new landlord of almost 50%. Andreas Tsitos bought the 36-unit building in early 2019, and he immediately raised rents. The current residents are not able to afford the rent hikes and have organized a tenant association. Tsitos's company, United Properties, owns 800 rental units, many in the City of Malden.
The mayor of Malden, Gary Christenson, as well as Malden City Councilor Stephen Winslow will joined the rally in solidarity with the renters, supporting their call for affordable and stable housing.
Dianne Richardson has been living in the building for 13 years. She's one of the tenants who received an unaffordable rent hike. Addressing her new landlord, she says, "United Properties, you did not buy a vacant building. You disrupted a community of people, and you upended our lives, causing untold stress, anxiety and worse."
"We are not just a collection of rent checks," adds Richardson. "We are human beings. See us."
A word from the 33 Park St. tenant association about their struggle: "Our historic apartment building in the heart of Malden was bought earlier this year by a real estate developer who now owns half of the city. Our new landlord has jacked up the rent by almost 50%, effectively driving out a majority of the long-term tenants, including the superintendent who had lived here and maintained the residence for more than 30 years. Those of us who are staying have decided to push back against this unfair and exorbitant increase in our rents. We are unable to find comparable housing options in Malden because the landlord has a monopoly on the rental market. But we are the working-class people that make Malden a thriving, diverse, and interesting community, and we refuse to give up our homes without a fight.
