The Western United States has to be one of the most desolate places that I have ever been to. It is hard to imagine how much of anything could survive here or what would want to attempt to survive here, yet there is actually a whole ecosystem that thrives here. There are Bison, Deer, Prairie Dogs, Birds, Snakes, and many desert flowers and the bees that pollinate them. Even in the most desolate of places, God put life. This should be an encouragement to us that even the most desolate of hearts can be filled with life and the darkest of souls can be filled with His Light that will drive out that darkness! Nothing is impossible for Him!

The southbound Trona Railway passes one of the few roads it encounters on the journey from the mines to the UP interchange at Searles.
Not the busy bustling hive of activity it was during its heyday, this is Dunaskin, Ayrshire where all that remains are the corroding derelict remains of some of Scotlands greatest industrial heritage.
Sometimes in far off lands, as far away as you can see, desolate places shrouded in mystery reveal themselves. And somehow, even in desolation I find allure, and beauty.
Taken in a desolate , old, shedding house in the old Portuguese colonial town of Goa, a part of Panjim the local city Center in the olden Portuguese era, a lot of these old building lie empty with no one to care for . Saw an opportunity for an amazing click , grabbed it.
Mill D North Fork to Desolation Lake; Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah; October 2017
I've never been able to figure out the origin of all the desolation names on the ridge between Big Cottonwood and Mill Creek Canyons, but there are a few: Desolation Lake, Desolation Peak, the Desolation Trail. These are from the end of the relatively easy seven mile round trip to Desolation Lake. I liked the how the contrast between the water of the lake, the early season snow, and the trees in these shots turned out.

Sunset in Monument Valley - September 2011...was hoping for a bit of drama in the sky, but no such luck....when you're on a schedule, you have to take what you can get :-)

Ratner Beach

I don't know the history of this area, and haven't been able to find anything online. On the beach below the Getty Villa in Malibu are the remains of pilings and concrete of what I believe was the site of a restaurant at one time.
It's a neat place to photograph, and I got a lot of interesting shots on Labor Day. This was taken at about 7:30 in the morning, shooting toward the sunrise to the southeast. The HDR has been highly stylized using Aurora HDR on top of Photomatix Pro.
Shipwreck Beach
Lana'i, HI

With an area of 141 square miles, Lana'i is the 6th largest of the 6 Hawai'ian islands tourists can visit. Lana'i City, the only town, located in the center of the island, doesn't have any stoplights and the overall speed limit is 20mph. (Strictly enforced.) There are only 30 miles of paved road. 3203 people live on Lana'i. There is a Four Seasons Resort located at Manele.
I rented a Jeep Wrangler 4X4 and visited three of the attractions listed on the map, then had an ice cream sundae at the 50's themed "Lana'i Bowl" in Dole Park.
To get to Shipwreck Beach, you have to take a dirt and sandy road all the way to the northeast shore of the island. The beach is named for a shipwreck rusting off the coast. (I'll post a photo of it later.)
This is a shot taken further up one of the paths at 10mm. I always love seeing wind twisted trees.
I foresee that man will resign himself each day to new abominations, and soon that only bandits and soldiers will be left.

One of my first images taken when arriving in Iceland earlier this year. The desolation of the farmhouses (many of which are abandoned) underscores the harsh nature of the working on the land. I hope this image captures that feeling.
