Marie had left the lookout the previous day - she was called out to East Washington to help out with firewatching there.
We had the place to ourselves.
(the cabin was locked, of course. last year, I was sharing this peak with about 20 people. the solitude this year was most welcome)

Their were a few beached fishing boats on the beach at Bulverhythe. This stretch of coast is very bare, windswept and barren as can be seen from these photos. It's very desolate, especially at this time of year!
What we came to Southend for... winter desolation. Shot on a Voigtlander Bessaflex TM, CZJ Flektogon 35/2.4 and Tri-X film.

History: From the road leading to the Valley of Desolation the monument of Commandant Scheepers is visible. He was one of the Boer commando leaders during the Anglo Boer War. He was executed on the 18th of January 1902 at 15:30pm on the Murraysburg road. The monument is situated about 3km outside of town on the left-hand side of the road.

Desolation Lake from the North, Wasatch Mountains, Utah. Why anyone would call this turquoise gem desolate is beyond me. This lake has no outlet, and only snow melt for an inlet, so its depth varies greatly from year to year and season to season. It has no fish, but lots of big Tiger Salamander live in it. Near high mark because of the deep snow pack this year.
