Just after sunrise on New Year's Day, we're the only nutjobs on the road. There's nothing, including cell phone reception, for miles.
Some of my sculptures in the show IT"S PAINTING SO IT MUST BE GERMAN at Silvershot, Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
made of papier mache, wood, wire, more paper, fabric and threads, etc. More on desolation row at spectrescope.blogspot.com/
You may think I mean the empty yard, but, no, I mean what was here before. This is getting better. There is vegetation growing now. The smoke stack and tanks were a sulfuric acid plant up until the early 1980s. But, no, even that wasn't the worst. This was an old style copper smelter that burned wood as charcoal under the cupric ore beginning just before the Civil War. Until the 1980s, there was a five mile circle around this point as desolate as the moon.
This photograph was taken specifically for the Flickr Worcester Group's February competition.
The theme for the month is "Desolate".
Here we have a woman who has suffered loss - we do not know who, or how. The grave is already showing signs of age, so we know it was some time ago, but she stands there with a single red rose expressing her love for the one who is gone. Even after this time she is still wearing her "widow's weeds", her desolation is vast, her loss so profound. But the grave is unmarked, no headstone, so perhaps her love was unrequited, or secret. Perhaps his family never knew of her existence...

if i were desolation i would long for dormancy simply for the purpose of hope.
wow, that almost sounds depressing, but it is not meant to be. was just dwelling a bit this morning on hope and how important it is to us as human beings. imperfect people. hope of something. something real. something perfect. something absolute. what do i hope for this morning? for today. for tomorrow. beyond that ...

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody's shouting
Which side are you on?
And Ezra Pound and T.S Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
About Desolation Row.
1. barren or laid waste; devastated: a treeless, desolate landscape.
2. deprived or destitute of inhabitants; deserted; uninhabited.
3. solitary; lonely: a desolate place.
4. having the feeling of being abandoned by friends or by hope; forlorn.
5. dreary; dismal; gloomy: desolate prospects.
Precisely how I felt when taking this picture.
