Deutschland / Nordrhein-Westfalen - Ruhr
Neheim
The Ruhr is a river in western Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia), a right tributary (east-side) of the Rhine.
Description and history
The source of the Ruhr is near the town of Winterberg in the mountainous Sauerland region, at an elevation of approximately 670 metres (2,200 ft). It flows into the lower Rhine at an elevation of only 17 metres (56 ft) in the municipal area of Duisburg. Its total length is 219 km (136 mi), its average discharge is 79 cubic metres per second (2,800 cu ft/s) at Mülheim near its mouth. Thus, its discharge is, for example, comparable to that of the river Ems in Northern Germany or the River Thames in the United Kingdom.
The Ruhr first passes the towns of Meschede, Arnsberg, Wickede, Fröndenberg, Holzwickede, Iserlohn, and Schwerte. Then the river marks the southern limit of the Ruhr area, passing Hagen, Dortmund, Herdecke, Wetter, Witten, Bochum, Hattingen, Essen, Mülheim, and Duisburg.
The Ruhr area was Germany's primary industrial area during the early- to mid-20th century. Most factories were located there. The occupation of the Ruhr from 1923 to 1924 by French forces, due to the Weimar Republic's failure to continue paying reparations from World War I, provoked passive resistance, which saw production in the factories grind to a halt. As a result, the German hyperinflation crisis grew even worse.
During World War II, two of the dams on the Ruhr, the Möhne Dam and the Sorpe Dam were targets for Operation Chastise, in which special "bouncing bombs" were developed to take out the dams and flood the valley, with the hope of seriously affecting the German industries there. The story was told in a 1951 book and the popular 1955 film made from it, The Dam Busters.

Colour Takes the Lead
Those who have followed me for a while know I tend to be a black and white kind of photographer. I’ve been trying to shoot more colour lately but black and white is still my comfort zone, it’s just how I tend to see the world. When I lift a camera to my eye, I’m usually looking for tone, textures, contrast, and light, not colour. I notice how tones play off one another, how shadows create depth, and how highlights draw attention. Colour, to me, often feels like a distraction from those things.
But every so often, I come across a scene where colour isn’t the distraction. It’s the story itself. To take it away would be to remove what gives the image life. Today’s photo is one of those moments.
The fruit stand’s bright oranges, reds, and greens immediately draw the eye. Even the burgundy canopy of Periska Foods adds to the rhythm of colour running through the frame. Then, up above, the “Art Classes Available” sign seems almost too perfect, as if reminding me that colour itself can be an art form. And finally, there’s the gentleman in the foreground, his distinctive hair adding one last splash of character.
In this image, colour isn’t just part of the composition. It is the subject.

Description of L.A.'s wonderful and famed Bradbury Building in the heart of downtown! Where Blade Runner was filmed as well as 500 Days of Summer among others!
Today I was visiting the Auschwitz/Birkenau museum. This is just one of many pictures I took. It was a experience that I will not forget in a while. Auschwitz 1 was really powerful to see and it was very intact. Birkenau was huge! I have seen many pictures of Birkenau, but it was amazing to be there and see it myself.
Hello! I've been only posting Lego related content on Flickr for a while now and I figured I'd share a different type of image. If you think this awesome then you should check out my instagram! I post about 5 times a week there for several reasons. 1. the community is larger 2. the layout is better for me. 3. And easier to post. If you want to consistent images from me then go check it out! Description:
The Ring Nebula (also catalogued as Messier 57, M57 or NGC 6720) is a planetary nebula in the mildly northern constellation of Lyra. Such nebulae are formed by a starburst – ionized gas has expelled into the surrounding interstellar medium by a star to form a vast luminous envelope containing the star in its last stages of its evolution before becoming a white dwarf.
This nebula was discovered by the French astronomer Charles Messier while searching for comets in late January 1779. Messier's report of his independent discovery of Comet Bode reached fellow French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix two weeks later, who then independently rediscovered the nebula while following the comet. Darquier later reported that it was "...as large as Jupiter and resembles a planet which is fading" (which may have contributed to the use of the persistent "planetary nebula" terminology).

The catalogue description gives us "A woman and two men pushing and pulling a cart with a child on it along a cobblestone street, possibly in France, Rue de Riosspelk". Well you all know that we like to have a good foreign shot from time to time, what can you tell us about this cracking photo from the Dillons?
+++ UPDATE +++
Well, this was our very first photograph ever that featured a dog pulling a cart! Lovely that after all these years, we're still finding unexpected gems in our photos. derangedlemur and Niall McAuley weren't long in narrowing this “Out Foreign” Dillon family photograph to Belgium, then to Brussels. And with Sharon Corbet’s help, we found ourselves located on the Rue aux Laines.

Description of Historic Place
The Victoria Park Square Heritage Conservation District is situated in the downtown area of the City of Brantford. The district encompasses Victoria Park Square and all the buildings on Market, George, Wellington and Darling Streets that front the Square. The buildings were constructed between 1861 and 1970 and are a mixture of local government facilities, churches, offices, and banks all arranged around a central park.
Heritage Value
Victoria Park Square is the visual focus of the district. The Victorian Formal Park was first landscaped in 1861 based on plans by John Turner. Turner's plans, in keeping with Upper Canada's link to Britain, were based on the configuration of the Union Jack, with four paths intersecting at the centre of the park. Victoria Park Square is a significant gathering place for local citizens. At the turn of the century, when Brantford was a well-developed industrial town and the hub of regional trade, the park was frequently used as an informal meeting place and a centre for leisure activities. The square was also intimately connected to the adjacent churches, as the congregations would linger after services or gather to enjoy church-sponsored activities.
Three buildings that John Turner designed overlook the park: St. Andrew's United Church (1859), Brant Community Church (1883), and his most significant building, the Brant County Court House (1852). The scale of the courthouse makes it the most prominent in the area, exhibiting a grandeur found throughout the square. The district also includes Brantford City Hall (1966); Brant County Registry Office (1920); Andrew Carnegie Library (1902-04); Central Presbyterian Church (1960); John Lind Building; Wyatt Purcell Building (circa 1970); Bank of Montréal (1913-14); Toronto Dominion Bank (1857-59); Canada Trust (1964-67); Canadian Foresters (1952); and Bell Canada (1949).
The Victoria Park Square Heritage Conservation District is a fine example of a traditional Town Square. The buildings form a harmonious streetscape around the park. The situation of each building around the Union Jack design of Victoria Park Square forms a rare composition and creates a sense of formality. The entrances of three of the surrounding buildings, the Andrew Carnegie Library, the Brant County Court House, and the Brantford City Hall Complex, are on the axis of the radiating Union Jack Plan. The Joseph Brant Memorial in the centre of the park creates ties to the fountain at City Hall and to the Statue of Alexander Graham Bell at the Bell Building.
Each building in the district reflects a particular period of architecture in Ontario. For example, the City Hall Complex exhibits Modernism through its free form design, simplicity, and forceful use of concrete. Other styles that are represented include Beaux Arts, Gothic Revival and Neo-Classical. The towers of the three churches in the district add to the sense of grandeur and provide a visual boundary for the square. Overall, the buildings in the square exhibit very formal and symmetrical designs.
Character-Defining Elements
Character defining elements that contribute to the heritage value of Victoria Park Square Heritage Conservation District include the:
- Union Jack design of the centrally located park
- harmonious streetscape created by the formality, grandeur, and symmetry of
the buildings
- buildings that reflect particular architectural time periods in Ontario, including Modern, Beaux Arts, Gothic Revival and Neo-Classical
- layout of the buildings on the axis of the Union Jack design
- use of statues to connect the buildings visually

Last year the Alice River was as dry as a dead dingo's donga. This year there was some rain and the river is hosting more water birds.
Scientific Name: Pelecanus conspicillatus
Description: There are seven species of pelicans in the world, all of which are similar in shape and, with one exception, are primarily white in colour. Males are larger than females. The most characteristic feature of pelicans is the elongated bill with its massive throat pouch. The Australian Pelican's bill is 40 cm - 50 cm long and is larger in males than females. Pelicans have large wings and a wingspan of 2.3 m - 2.5 m. Pelicans have an extremely light skeleton, weighing less than 10% of their total body weight.
Distribution: The Australian Pelican is found throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and western Indonesia, with occasional reports in New Zealand and various western Pacific islands.
Habitat: Pelicans are widespread on freshwater, estuarine and marine wetlands and waterways including lakes, swamps, rivers, coastal islands and shores.
Seasonal movements: Pelicans are highly mobile, searching out suitable areas of water and an adequate supply of food. Pelicans are not capable of sustained flapping flight, but can remain in the air for 24 hours, covering hundreds of kilometres. They are excellent soarers and can use thermals to rise to considerable altitudes. Flight at 1,000m is common, and heights of 3 000 m have been recorded. By moving from one thermal to the next, pelicans can travel long distances with a minimum of effort, reaching air speeds of up to 56 km/hour.
Feeding: The bill and pouch of pelicans play an important role in feeding. The bill is sensitive and this helps locate fish in murky water. It also has a hook at the end of the upper mandible, probably for gripping slippery food items. When food is caught, the pelican manipulates it in its bill until the prey typically has its head pointing down the pelican's throat. Then with a jerk of the head the pelican swallows the prey. The bill is delicately built. The lower jaw consists of two thin and weakly articulated bones from which the pouch hangs. When fully extended, the bill can hold up to 13 litres. The pouch does not function as a place to hold food for any length of time. Instead it serves as a short-term collecting organ. Pelicans plunge their bills into the water, using their pouches as nets. Once something is caught, a pelican draws its pouch to its breast. This empties the water and allows the bird to manoeuvre the prey into a swallowing position. The pouch can also serve as a net to catch food thrown by humans, and there are sightings of pelicans drinking by opening their bill to collect rainwater.
The Australian Pelican may feed alone, but more often feeds as a cooperative group. Sometimes these groups are quite large. One group numbered over 1,900 birds. A flock of pelicans works together, driving fish into a concentrated mass using their bills and sometimes by beating their wings. The fish are herded into shallow water or surrounded in ever decreasing circles.
Breeding: Breeding depends on environmental conditions, particularly rainfall. Pelicans are colonial breeders with up to 40 000 individuals grouping on islands or secluded shores. Breeding begins with courtship. The female leads potential mates (two to eight or more) around the colony. As the males follow her in these walks, they threaten each other while swinging their open bills from side to side trying to attract the female's attention. The males may also pick up small objects, like sticks or dry fish, which they toss in the air and catch again, repeating the sequence several times. Both sexes perform "pouch-rippling" in which they clap their bills shut several times a second and the pouch ripples like a flag in a strong breeze. As the courtship parade progresses, the males drop out one by one. Finally, after pursuits on land, water or in the air, only a single male is left. The female leads him to a potential nest site. During the courtship period, the bill and pouch of the birds change colour dramatically. The forward half of the pouch becomes bright salmon pink, while the skin of the pouch in the throat region turns chrome yellow. Parts of the top and base of the bill change to cobalt blue, and a black diagonal strip appears from the base to the tip. This colour change is of short duration, the intensity usually subsiding by the time incubation starts. The nest consists of a scrape in the ground prepared by the female. She digs the scrape with her bill and feet, and lines it with any scraps of vegetation or feathers within reach of the nest. Within three days egg-laying begins and eggs are laid two to three days apart. Both parents share incubation and the eggs are incubated on their feet. The first-hatched chick is substantially larger than its siblings. It receives most of the food and may even attack and kill its nest mates. A newly hatched pelican has a large bill, bulging eyes, and skin that looks like small-grained bubble plastic. The skin around the face is mottled with varying degrees of black and the colour of the eyes varies from white to dark brown. This individual variation helps the parents to recognise their chick from hundreds of others. The chicks leave their nests to form creches of up to 100 birds. They remain in creches for about two months, by the end of which they have learnt to fly and are fairly independent. Wild birds may live between ten and possibly 25 years or more.

My dear Sprinkles. He is a sweetheart of a pup and has delighted us for around 10 years since we adopted him. Unfortunately early summer he was diagnosed with a tumor. When I heard that,I desperately hoped we would have the whole summer with him, to spoil him . I am greatful we got that ! While we can see him not doing as well some days now as things are progressing, he is comfortable and happy and I'm greatful for every day I now have with him. He really is the best boy around.

The Wild Duck Cluster (also known as Messier 11, or NGC 6705) is an open cluster of stars in the constellation Scutum (the Shield). It was discovered by Gottfried Kirch in 1681. Charles Messier included it in his catalogue of diffuse objects in 1764. Its popular name derives from the brighter stars forming a triangle which could resemble a flying flock of ducks (or, from other angles, one swimming duck). The cluster is located just to the east of the Scutum Star Cloud midpoint.
The Wild Duck Cluster is one of the richest and most compact of the known open clusters. It is one of the most massive open clusters known, and it has been extensively studied. Its age has been estimated to about 316 million years. The core radius is 1.23 pc (4.0 ly) while the tidal radius is 29 pc (95 ly). Estimates for the cluster's mass range from 3,700 M☉ to 11,000 M☉, depending on the method chosen. The brightest cluster member is visual magnitude 8, and it has 870 members of at least magnitude 16.5. It has an integrated absolute magnitude of –6.5, and a visual extinction of 1.3. The cluster is located 6.8 kpc (22,000 ly) from the Galactic Center, close to the galactic plane, and is not far from its birthplace.

I am adding the description that I wrote under a different, previously posted image taken on the same walk.
"Three days ago, on 17 August 2016, I drove my painfully noisy vehicle for just a very short distance, as far as a local park. Each year, I tend to visit the area to look for any mushrooms, and I knew that I just couldn't miss a quick visit. Found a few fungi to photograph, so I was happy. Then I remembered that I had found mushrooms in a different part of the park in other years, so yesterday, I risked an even shorter drive to see what I could find. Everywhere was very dry and I saw quite a few shrivelled fungi. Luckily, I came across a few that were fresher and worth photographing. So dark in the forest and many photos were not as sharp as I would have liked, including this mushroom growing on a tree trunk. I tried so hard to get a sharp photo, but this was the best that I got.
At the end of my walk, I sat at a picnic table near the parking lot and kept an eye on all the large holes in the ground, made by Richardson's Ground Squirrels. I was just about ready to give up, when I happened to look down close to my feet and there was one solitary 'Gopher' three or four feet away from me. They are such fun to watch. Returned home without running into a Police car, which could very easily have pulled me over because of the dreadful noise my car is making. Today, 20 August 2016, is day 12 since ordering my new car .... sigh."

I offered the Opportunity of creating an Enord together. Each Member of the Bio Chat could select a part of the Enord.
The Final result was Recking Ákos! :D
Description: Barnard 150 (B150, LDN1082) dark nebula is a type of interstellar cloud that is so dense that it obscures the light from the background emission or reflection nebula or that it blocks out background stars. The extinction of the light is caused by interstellar dust grains located in the coldest, densest parts of larger molecular clouds. The form of such dark clouds is very irregular as they have no clearly defined outer boundaries and sometimes take on convoluted serpentine shapes. The largest dark nebulae are visible to the naked eye, appearing as dark patches against the brighter background of the Milky Way. In the inner regions of dark nebulae important events take place, such as the formation of stars and masers.
B150 is also known as the Seahorse Nebula. With a bit of imagination the dark nebula shown in the image above roughly outlines the shape of a seahorse with its head pointing downward as it floats in a sea of stars roughly 2 degrees wide in the northern sky. This was actually my test exposure to get a baseline for a smaller aperture. When I saw it come out of the camera, I really liked what the clouds were doing, but, try as I might for an hour or so, I couldn't replicate it. Interesting how fast things can change.

Description: I developed this image of the North American Nebula NGC 700 from 60x300s subs or 5.0 hours of total exposure time. I used the Optolong L-eXtreme Dual Bandpass Light Pollution Filter. It has two 7nm pass bands centered on the H-alpha and OIII wavelengths. With a one-shot color (OSC) camera and an L-eXtreme filter combination the red signal from the H-alpha tends to dominate. In the nonlinear postprocessing phase I applied Histogram Transformation, Local Histogram Equalization and Curves Transformation in small doses in multiple passes.
Date / Location: 20, 25, 26 June 2022 / Washington D.C.
Equipment:
Scope: WO Zenith Star 81mm f/6.9 with WO 6AIII Flattener/Focal Reducer x0.8
OSC Camera: ZWO ASI 2600 MC Pro at 100 Gain and 50 Offset
Mount: iOptron GEM28-EC
Guide Scope: ZWO ASI 30mm f/4
Guide Camera: ZWO ASI 120mm mini
Light Pollution Filter: Optolong L-eXtreme Dual Bandpass
Processing Software: Pixinsight
Processing Steps:
Preprocessing: I preprocessed 60x300s subs (= 5.0 hours) in Pixinsight to get an integrated image using the following process steps: Image Calibration > Cosmetic Correction > Subframe Selector > Debayer > Select Reference Star and Star Align > Image Integration.
Linear Postprocessing: Dynamic Crop > Dynamic Background Extractor (both subtraction to remove light pollution gradients and division for flat field corrections) > Background Neutralization > Color Calibration.
Nonlinear Postprocessing and additional steps: Histogram Transformation > Noise Xterminator > Histogram Transformation (small doses in multiple passes) > Local Histogram Equalization > Curves Transformation (small doses in multiple passes).
Description:
Alanboar is a very experienced brick model builder. He was invited by Tai O Heritage Hotel to visit and create a brick model base on the local fishing village Tai O, also known as "Venice of the Orient". Cheung uses nearly 20,000 pieces of bricks and spend two months' time to create this interesting scenery of Tai O. There are stilts houses and Tai O traditional Water Marriage and Dragon Boat Water Parade in the busy waterway. You can find many Tai O attractions including such as Tai O Bridge, Kwan Tai Temple, shrimp paste factory, General's Rock and Tai O Heritage Hotel on top on the mountain. With the mini figures on the street which makes this creation more attractive. Cheung also had a wonderful time with his son Ka Him while they created this model together.

Tai O Story & Photo Details :
My techniques are quite rudimentary compared to many of the fabulous CDers on this site. Someday I'll get realistic breast forms and hip pads. But that day is not today.
(overall description of this photo dump):
I dressed on Halloween last year at college, including poorly applied makeup by myself, and went to a pizza place to pick up a pizza and brought it back to my dorm room. I didn't interact with anyone while dressed besides the person working at the pizza place. I don't really count that as a dressing session- plus, the wig had been sitting around for 11 months and hadn't been washed.
I've been living in a big city this summer and one day was out downtown and saw the girls/women around my age in their pretty outfits and thought "that could be me... I need to get back into crossdressing while I'm still young.." (turned 19 in May). A few months later, I got my wig washed, shaved my body, got my eyebrows waxed, nails done, and makeup applied by someone who knew what he was doing this time. Here are some of the best pics and videos taken by me, as I was alone again (as usual with this, but whatever), and the makeup guy. Hope y'all enjoy.
Like always, none of my photos are edited.
