Derek Jeter, shortstop for the NY Yankees, arrived at the Red Carpet Show with his parents. This was for the 2009 All Star Game in St Louis.
British TV and film actor Derek Guyler was born this day, April 29th, in 1914. As I don't have a DVD for his most celebrated roles in either Please Sir! or Sykes, this will have to do; seen as Doctor Crisp, alongside a stern-looking John Dunbar in The Fast Lady (1962).

American actor and director John Derek (1926-1998) was known for such films as Since You Went Away (John Cromwell, 1944), All the King's Men (Robert Rossen, 1949), and Cecil B. De Mille's The Ten Commandments (1956), and for his marriages to Ursula Andress, Linda Evans, and Bo Derek.
John Derek was the son of writer/director Lawson Harris and bit-actress Dolores Johnson. Signed by David O. Selznick in 1943, Derek made his film debut as an extra in Since You Went Away (John Cromwell, 1944), playing a soldier - which indeed he was at the time. His first starring role was as a death-row juvenile delinquent in Columbia's Knock on Any Door (Nicholas Ray, 1949), in which he was given more screen time than nominal star Humphrey Bogart. Most of Derek's subsequent Columbia assignments were in workaday "B" costume pictures and Westerns. He enjoyed his best role in years, that of John Wilkes Booth, in Prince of Players (Philip Dunne, 1954), starring Richard Burton as his brother, the 19th-century American actor, Edwin Booth.
By 1961, John Derek's film career was seriously flagging, obliging him to sign on as one of the stars of the 26-week TV series Frontier Circus (1961-1962). Unhappy with his progress (or lack of it) as an actor, Derek turned director for the wartime flick Once Before I Die (1966). Derek used many of his directorial efforts as showcases for his various "protege" wives: Ursula Andress, Linda Evans, and Bo Derek. When not playing "Svengali" (an appellation he fully accepted with high good humor, as did his lovely "Trilbys"), John Derek kept busy as a director and cinematographer on such quasi-erotic films as Bolero (1984) and Ghosts Can't Do It (1990). Derek suffered from heart trouble for many years. In 1998, the 71-year-old director was found unconscious in his Santa Ynez Valley home. Despite the doctor's efforts, the damage to his heart muscle proved too great, and he passed away.

I took a long walk to Ocean Beach last week. In many ways, I would have preferred walking through Golden Gate Park, as Lincoln Way isn't the most scenic areas of San Francisco, but I wanted to get to the beach before the light there got too dim, so, the less-distracting more-direct Lincoln Way.
When I made my way to the beach, with the idea of photographing Cliff House (seen here in the background), I saw a man with a couple of dogs making their way along the water in my direction. One of the dogs was a Collie-mix of some kind; the other was a Boston Terrier. The dogs got nearer to me, and much to my surprise, the Collie came right to me and immediately rubbed against me and allowed me to pet him. The Boston Terrier followed and likewise was unusually friendly.
As the man came nearer, with the collie still pressing up against me, I laughed and told him how unusual I thought the dogs' friendliness was. I told him I have found that San Francisco dogs, while well-behaved, tend to be not very interested in strangers; that they tend to stick very close to their owners.
He told me that that Frank (the Boston Terrier) was his dog and Bernard (the Collie) belonged to a friend, that the two dogs have been friends since they were both very young, hence their very lively play with each other.
I told him of my experiences with a Boston Terrier (Beans) that was on my paper route when I was a kid. I told him I would play with Beans by running back and forth in a blacktop driveway, getting a kick out of watching him slide along the driveway as he tried to stop to turn around. He then told me that he runs Frank on paved surfaces in order to trim him nails, which I found clever and funny.
During the discussion, of course, he noticed the Rolleicord and I had to go through my spiel about my rule, and he asked if we could include Frank in the photo. I, of course, agreed. Bernard was a bit too antsy to pose for the photo. (Frank, frankly, wasn't much interested either, as you can tell.)
I gave Derek my card and he e-mailed me immediately from his phone with his e-mailed address, one of the few times that I've actually been contacted by one of my Rolleicord subjects.
P.S. This is the second dog named Frank I've met in the last couple of months.
