Most years I run a project on deployable structures for dissertation topics and each year there's always a bit of a headscratch involved with the students while they wrestle to understand the geometry of how they fold.
This year I've bought some specific bits of LEGO Technic to help them investigate the effects of the location of the hinge points for pantographs and also to make some cable-chain arches to help them understand the structural behaviour a little easier.
