The graceful, winding arms of the majestic spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194) appear like a grand spiral staircase sweeping through space. They are actually long lanes of stars and gas laced with dust.
This sharpest-ever image, taken in January 2005 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble, illustrates a spiral galaxy's grand design, from its curving spiral arms, where young stars reside, to its yellowish central core, a home of older stars. The galaxy is nicknamed the Whirlpool because of its swirling structure.

3 spiral galaxies 35 million light years away. (plus another tiny spiral galaxy, much further away). They cover an area of the sky similar to the full moon.
This shot consists of 128 exposures, most of which were 45 seconds long at ISO400. A few of the exposures were 1 to 3 minutes long. Total exposure time: 1 hour 46 minutes.
It was very late that night, Because of the cold, the telescope mount wasn't turning smooth enough to track the stars for longer exposures without vibrations ruining the shots. So I set my laptop to keep taking 45 second exposures for as long as it could, until the camera battery died or until the telescope swung into the tripod legs (which it did a couple hours later) and went inside to warm up and go to bed.
Shot on a Canon T1i at prime focus on a Meade 10" SN-10-AT telescope.
I had to throw out more than 50 exposures that were ruined by vibrations. The remaining shots were stacked together in Deep Sky Stacker to reduce the noise and enhance the signal. The individual shots only have faint hints of the spiral arms.

Cat's Paw Nebula (NGC 6334) is an emission nebula and star-forming region located in the constellation Scorpius. It is 5,500 light years from Earth. The red colour comes from an abundance of ionized hydrogen atoms.
I only took three exposures for this image as I was focused on capturing my first galaxy image this night. However everything worked out perfectly with my alignment on this night. In retrospect I wish I took more exposures for this image.

This nebula also known as ESO 392-SC10 is located near the Scorpion's stinger in the southern constellation Scorpius. It is easy to locate because of four seventh magnitude stars in a straight line near the center of the image. Just as in its neighboring NGC 6334 nebula, massive stars are born in NGC 6357.

That is a galaxy in the constellation of Hydra.

The Louvre has dominated central Paris since the late 12th century. Built on the city's western edge, the original structure was gradually engulfed as the city grew. The dark fortress of the early days was transformed into the modernized dwelling of François I and, later, the sumptuous palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Here we explore the history of this extraordinary edifice and of the museum that has occupied it since 1793.
