Senior session. Lighting is an Elinchrom Quadra in the Deep Octa cam right. Mother nature for hair light and fill. Become a Facebook fan.
Second shot: Concentration on the mysterious blue eyes by hiding the rest of the face with a pinkish scarf. Additionally I chose a more blueish white balance to emphasize the eye colour, generating a colder atmosphere and tweaked the contrast locally to give a softer, pastel like colour rendition
Light: One elinchrom quadra ranger head into 70cm deep octa (only inner diffusor attached), flash on camera axis about 1,5m above camera aimed downwards.

When I work with digital files I may spend hours to get the look I want.
This is especially true for colors. Digital get misguided by different colors presented in the scene.
Beleive or not but I spent approximately 10 minutes in post: few wrinkles to remove.
No touches of color palette.

A senior shot for Mackenzie..
she wanted a shot similar to what i have done before and last nights rain presented a different pavement and we took advantage of this..
i had a difficult time with my cactus triggers, i originally wanted to place it behind Mackenzie and back light her (flash on the ground), but after 10 or more attempts, the back lighting didn't fire so i had to put the lighting on the stand..
i have done this before with a 430 and a cactus on the ground, but the combo of 580 and cactus didn't fire on the ground.. i have to investigate on this.. maybe more noise from the 580 speedlight that affects cactus radio waves more than the 430..
any of you guys have had this notion?
so the back lighting was a bare 580EXII at the lowest power 1/128 about 20 feet back..
front lighting was Elinchrom Quadra at the lowest power.. about 8 feet camera right..
her mother was right against the right wall of the alley.
the alley was not flat and we placed her on the slope just to cup her in place..
also i had to drag the shutter.. this probably the lowest hand held speeds i would ever go..
backlighting 20 feet from Subject @ lowest power bare

this winter is bumming me out still
i have lots of wedding stuff.. but my core photography is seniors.. so here is another one.. !
lighting was boomed by her friend.
elinchrom quadra with deep octa about 5 feet away.. at 3.5 power on the elinchrom scale
shooting right into the sun with a neutral density filter value of .6 to help with lowering the shutter speeds and as it turns out i was a little too much but i didn't have time to switch out as the light was about to be gone.. so i just left it on there and got what i could..

Portrait of my daughter taken last night, stayed out a bit past bedtime. She's always fun to go shooting with, she enjoys exploring the woods and will wander off fearlessly into the unknown.
This one needs to be viewed large to see the effect.
Bit of a different technique used here. Stitched panorama for reduced DOF, aka The Brenizer Method. 26 images stitched together to create a wide field of view with a fast aperture 85mm lens, sort of like shooting on a larger film format. No significant editing in Photoshop, other than using Photomerge.
Shooting details: 1Ds III, 85mm f/1.2 L II @ f/1.4, ISO 400, 1/8 second (tripod), 3 stop ND filter, Elinchrom Quadra camera right into 39" deep octa w/ white deflector, no diffusers, minimum power on B channel, ambient light about 1 stop underexposed.
Studio shot with a Nikon D850 and 85mm 1.4G. Nikon SB900 inside the stage light with a yellow gel. Stripbox camera right rear. Feathered deep octa camera left high. Silver reflector camera right front low. Strobe with orange gel on the backdrop. Model is holding my 1971 Nikon F1,

So here is another one from this series..
the rains kept us inside.. so my lighting was very limited and i had to work as if i was in a studio..
but i am not used to this a completely controlled light environment .. so i had to set up this light and it baffled me for a while until i got it right..
i am very happy with the balance with the room light and the subject light..
single quadra with a deep octa was my light source.. elinchrom quadra was at 1.3 power

Maddy wanted a pool shot and i knew exactly how to light one up!
this was her pose and i think it is rocking!
mother held the quadra for the first 10 shots. and we couldn't get into the pose on time because Maddy wasmaking the water wake and getting back into the pose..
so mother ended up in the water too to make the ripples haha..
so this was a 3 light setup
2 AB1600 as side kickers
1 Quadra with a 39 inch Deep Octa
the AB's were at about 3/4 power
the quadra was @ 5 on the elinchrom scale

My first shooting in the Hidden Room at Dreamworks Animation.
It's very small, I need to use my laptop with tethering because my camera viewfinder was blocked by a furniture.
Light by 2 Quadra :
One on right with a 39" Softbox Deep Octa with orange gel.
One on left inside a shade with orange gel too.
2 secondes exposure to bring more ambiant light (very low).

Thursday - In Silence

She's on the run, trying to escape something or someone she can't even remember.
She's been running along this railroad for hours. She's so tired, she needs to rest. She decides to sit down for a while.
As time passes she's getting dreamy and forget she's trying to escape.
She finally decides to go on. She gets back on her feet and takes a look at the horizon. The sun is now fading as the night begins to fall...

Max Hamlyn for Registered Practical Nurses Magazine. A 6 shot panoramic image to create a wider view while maintaining a shallow depth of field.
Strobist info: Since the sun was setting behind us at camera left, but I wanted to light Max evenly, we scrimmed the sun falling on him with a 3x6' Westcott Scrim Jim & 1-stop diffusion fabric. Then, an Elinchrom Ranger Quadra through a 100cm Deep Octa was boomed camera left, but enough to get light onto his face. I used a Variable ND filter to keep my shutter speed at 1/125th while keeping the background exposure in-line.
