PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Members of the Pennsylvania State Veterans Commission and residents and staff from the Southwest Veterans Home were among those who attended the Southwestern Pennsylvania Word War II Memorial dedication ceremony Dec. 6. After the dedication, attendees toured the memorial’s numerous panes depicting WWII events and southwest Pennsylvania’s contributions to the war effort. I had seen this vehicle from the train on my way back from Brighton. Seconds afterwards we had passed through a station, enabling me to get a "fix". That had been on the Saturday. The bus, at least in the one-second glimpse I'd had from the train, looked to be in an easily photographable position in an open yard. For some days the thought rankled. Eventually, on the Wednesday, I returned. All the way from Bristol. Well, in the words of the signature tune of a popular contemporary children's television programme, dedikashun's what you need if yuh wanna be a record breaker. I was in my late 20s but used to watch the programme because of a decidedly un-childlike interest in its co-presenter, Cheryl Baker. Fwoaar! I wouldn't have minded breaking a few records with her I can tell you.

It was one of my All-Line Railrover holidays, so the money had already been paid "up front" ...to use a modish phrase whose currency was still many years in the future. The travelling didn't involve any additional expense. The station had been Coulsdon North and the buses were in a corner of the station yard. Contrary to my earlier impression however, the FLF hadn't exactly been parked with the photographer in mind. This was about the best I could manage. The bus was ex Western National no. 2089 (BOD 31C) and now belonged to the Purley Car Co. Ltd of Warlingham, trading as Hardy's Coaches. The livery, as I remember it, was a fetching blue and grey. Not a long life for a bus. Derelict at 14 years. The occasion was Wednesday 4th July 1979.

A stone carved in dedication to Hecate by/for the Greek father and son pictured at the bottom. Note Hecate's three priestesses with the double torches and cool headgear. If you look at the large version of this picture, you might be able to puzzle out the Greek inscriptions. I'm curious enough to eventually haul out my Liddell-Scott (Gk.-English dictionary)...eventually.

Tears in Heaven (Eric Clapton)

Would you know my name

If I saw you in heaven

Will it be the same

If I saw you in heaven

I must be strong, and carry on

Cause I know I don't belong

Here in heaven

Would you hold my hand

If I saw you in heaven

Would you help me stand

If I saw you in heaven

I'll find my way, through night and day

Cause I know I just can't stay

Here in heaven

Time can bring you down

Time can bend your knee

Time can break your heart

Have you begging please

Begging please

Beyond the door

There's peace I'm sure.

And I know there'll be no more...

Tears in heaven

They were finally seated in Orchestra - and she found out she's in First Chair. She managed to hold on to that position all of last year, and she working hard to do it again. I never have to remind her to practice - and she works through even the most frustrating sessions. I am GRATEFUL for her dedication to playing this beautiful instrument.
