Today’s items were gleaned from all over the house over the weekend. I combined the 2 days as we had been out and about. I had intended on concentrating on one room at a time, but as I was up in the loft I found a couple of bits and also some in the spare bedroom that I’m trying to tidy up ready for my 6-month old grandson to stay tomorrow.

 

From top left:

 

A giant Nemo balloon that has lost its buoyancy. We bought this for the baby, but the gas has nearly all gone and he doesn’t float any more. This I will have to pop and see if I can use any of the bits in my crafting. If not it will have to go in the rubbish bag.

 

A black panther soft toy. This I found in a bag in the loft. It’s not needed so I will give it to the charity we support for their soft toy tombola in November.

 

I also found the other soft toy with it, so that will also go to the charity.

 

A metal tin. Useful to put things in, but I have hundreds of such receptacles! My mum will have this, she’s always after more storage containers.

 

A babies’ names book. My daughter had this before she had the baby, and we don’t need it now. I will take this along to Oxfam.

 

A ‘chick novel’ – this has been read by me and my daughter, so we don’t want to hang on to it. I will take this along to Oxfam too.

 

A lavender bag that has lost its smell. It is made really nicely, but as it has no smell it isn’t much use. I will put this in the textile recycling bag.

 

A sympathy card with CD. I bought this earlier in the year as an emergency card, but I managed to make one so I don’t need this one any more. I will take this to Oxfam.

 

A velvet type scarf. This was a birthday present from someone a few years ago. I have never worn it as I don’t really wear scarves, so I’ll take it along to Oxfam as well.

 

A fun bag. I bought this in Marbella, Spain, as I needed something on the spur of the moment. Used it for one week then it got relegated into the loft. I will put this on Freecycle.

 

That concludes the weekend’s finds. A few more unwanted things gone from the house and it is beginning to look a bit tidier!

 

I got back from our cabin and received all these wonderful gifts...been crazy busy, daughter just returned after being away for three weeks...think I have been doing laundry for a week straight :)

So I don't really know much of anything about sergers. But now I have one, thanks to the desire to declutter that a fellow non-sewing crafty friend had as she came across this serger sitting in the back of her closet for several years had. She'd talked to me a couple of years about sergers and I'd talked about how I thought it would be easier to do linings on a serger but I wasn't sure that I wanted to invest in one. She said "I've got one I'm not using. I'll look for it and give you a call." And she did when she finally came across it yesterday. So it's used, but it's only been used a few times and it hasn't been used in years. So a nice cleaning and maybe an oiling and a test run on scrap fabric. But I'm excited. I think this will make working with ripstop easier so I may actually be able to turn some of the ripstop I purchased into reusable shopping totes like I planned. And after looking at a quilt recently on MovingHands Flickr stream with seams exposed, I've got an idea for the flap of a messenger bag that I think will be easier to make with a serger. Now if only I had time to sit down and play with it for a week to really get to know it.

I found these things tucked into handbags and hidden on the closet floor.

This is a very thrifty/upcycled bag. The only new material used was some thread. The hedgehog was from a pattern that I found in a thrift store magazine. The doily it is stitched on was given to me by a friend, who got it from the thrift store they volunteer at. The buttons were from another friend. The yellow and red fabric was from a friend of a friend, who was moving and had to declutter their craft supplies. I'm very proud of how it turned out.

This set of Bitty Twins is actually my childhood set. I don't remember getting these dolls because I was so little (and I have a horrible memory.) There were no scuffs or marks on them and all their paint is still intact. They were very dusty though, to the point where the dust had formed dark splotches I was afraid I couldn't get out. Luckily it came off with some baking soda. When I outgrew baby dolls these guys pretty much just lived in their crib at my grandparent's house. I was recently over there helping them declutter and organize when I came across these two in the back of the closet in the guest room. The moment I saw them I knew I had to save them. It's so much fun having my Bitty Twins back in my life. I named them Alex and Annie partly after a favorite jewelry brand and partly because no other names seemed to suit them. I'm excited to have these two back in my life and I'm excited to start collecting their collection.

At one time I knew the history behind this smokestack, but I've forgotten it at this point. Needless to say, this is a landmark in our small town. They decorate the top of it for various holidays with lights; it hasn't been decorated for Halloween yet but soon they will be adding the outline of a pumpkin to the top of this and light it up.

 

I have been slowly reading through the beginning of "Within the Frame", and as I was out there shooting today, I tried to apply what I was learning. I moved around to several different places until I got the perspective I wanted. Then, when I got home, I was reading some more in the book and he was talking about excluding things from the frame and trying color, monochrome and duo tones to see which one draws you into the picture. So, I decided to try it with this shot. I used Lighroom 3 to adjust lighting, clarity and a few other things that I can't remember right at this point, then took it into Photoshop Elements 8 and played with the lighting a bit more, isolating the door to the smokestack to lighten it and make it stand out, lightened the smokestack itself, darkened the sky a bit more, removed a few distracting objects, removed a cable that was coming into the shot, and removed a distracting stick "thing" from the corner of the shot. Took it back to Lightroom and made a couple more adjustments and then uploaded it.

 

I think that, for my first attempt at trying to "declutter" a shot and achieve what I had in mind, I'm happy with this. I will upload and attach the original in the comments section.

Day 17: Set a specific bed time and stick to it.

I've had this rule for myself for who knows how long: I try to be in bed by 10 p.m. and I really have to be in bed by 10:30 p.m. - no exceptions! My son wakes up around 5 a.m. and we have a looong day ahead, especially if I'm too tired. I'm doing this for both of us. He takes a good nap around noon and lately I've been so tired I sometimes take a short nap, too.

I was putting out one of our Hot Spots for a couple of minutes. After - before. I just recently washed the tablecloth and it still needs to be ironed. I don't like it too much, but I want to keep the new table from getting damaged and that will do when it's just the three of us here.

he had very brotherly energy … I don’t know why I just kept giggling, I couldn’t help but not too … we were watching football and he kept saying – ‘concentrate, stay with me’ … he was snapping his fingers to keep my attention … ‘look me in the eye and follow’ … he made me loosen up, like shake off any other energy and align to the music … my hubby brought in ice cream and he was ‘o’k, I’ll just wait‘ ... he jumped on a ledge, propped his arms by his side and started swinging his legs … as soon as I put my empty bowl down, he jumped off ‘o’k, let’s go’ … he was like a little league coach, go, go, go .. very fast on his feet, almost floating on his toes

 

Iater I mentioned to my hubby, that I felt his left leg was shorter than his right, he walked with a skip and sort of led on with his left shoulder, almost rolling it forward … he said, that doesn’t sound right, he looked it up online and it turns out, he had a freak accident playing football and had a surgery on his left foot that almost ended his dancing carrier

These have been placed recently on the west wall so that we can start storing " Vertically " now.

I have been married to my husband for 14 years, and we have three children: two girls and a boy. My son has a disability, and it’s been difficult for him and our family. I had always worked full time in order to help provide for my kids and to contribute financially to our household.

 

A few years ago, my son started having problems at school, and I was having to leave work on a regular basis. My husband and I decided it would be best if I quit my job and stayed home full time with my son. So, for a year and a half I did just that. It wasn’t easy. I became depressed. Even though I was helping my son, I felt worthless. We struggled financially living off of my husband’s income. He did seasonal work in the construction field, so work wasn’t always guaranteed for him.

 

I was at home watching the news one evening when a story about Goodwill Industries Serving Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa’s Customer Connect program aired. It was a six-month program that taught individuals customer service training. It sparked my interest. I thought to myself, “This may be just what I need.”

 

I called the number several days later. Unfortunately, the program was full by the time I called. Why didn’t I call sooner? Even though I was disappointed, I was motivated to do something with myself. So I enrolled in a local college to start taking some classes. Several months had passed and I was about ready to begin my classes when I received a call from Goodwill’s Customer Connect. She called to inform me that they had a spot for me in their next cohort. I was so excited I didn’t hesitate and immediately went down to their main office to fill out paper work.

 

I completed the program six months later. It wasn’t easy. My son’s disability and the issues that come with it were still there. I had to leave class early a few times to be with my son, but Goodwill understood and allowed me to do so. With the help of Goodwill, I was able to secure an internship with Charles Drew Health Center. That lasted 12 weeks and eventually turned into full-time employment.

 

Today I am a WIC Clerk in the WIC Center at Charles Drew. I enroll individuals into the program. I really love my job. I enjoy my coworkers and am so blessed to be working. I am so happy I am able to contribute to my family’s needs financially. The lights stay on. We are able to do things like go to the movies. My son is doing better. My oldest daughter is in college. Life is good for us.

From Tupperware, to pots and pans, to the pile of cleaning supplies under the sink, it is hard to know where to start. So let our recipe for decluttering your kitchen guide you.

Cabinets and Drawers

Without organized cabinets, it can be difficult to meal prep. Also, if your kitchen is crowded with unnecessary items, it’s tough to cook and clean.

Start by clearing out your cabinets. When you have everything out, decide what to keep, donate, sell, or toss. Discard anything overused, chipped, or expired. Overused items could include: an old non-stick pan, chipped glassware, or a scratched pot. This could also include expired snacks or spices that you no longer use. Do you have Tupperware containers that are missing a lid? Do you have a mug collection that has gotten out of control? Then it’s time to toss or donate these items.

Once you’ve narrowed down what is reentering your cabinets, create labels and sections based on frequency of use. Labels allow easier access and serve as a reminder when you’re running low on ingredients. This could also help your kids unload the dishwasher. Sections allow for better organization. Add risers to stack plates and use clear containers. When you use clear containers, it’s easier to find what you need.

Declutter Tip: Add removable, non-adhesive water-resistant liners to your cabinets to prevent water damage and to help make cleaning easier.

You can repeat these steps for your drawers and pantry. Add drawer organizers and you’ll have a well-organized miscellaneous drawer everyone is sure to envy. For your pantry, add a Lazy Susan so you can easily access your spices. Use clear containers to hold grab-and-go snacks and granola bars. This will make it easier to write your grocery list, as you can see what you have in your drawers and pantry.

The refrigerator is one of the most forgotten areas of the kitchen, but it can also be home to some of the most harmful bacteria in your house. To better your health and the quality of your food, start by creating a schedule to regularly clear, clean, and organize your refrigerator.

Clear out any unused or expired food. Check for any expired products or spills you may not have noticed. Be sure to discard of these items properly, as some states require you to leave meat in the packaging to better prevent any spread of harmful bacteria. Check out your state’s rules for proper disposal of these items.

Clean your refrigerator, the drawers, the shelves, and any additional containers you may have for organization. If your refrigerator allows, adjust your shelving for optimal use of your space, making it convenient for your daily use. If possible, add liners to your drawers and shelves.

Declutter Tip: Be sure to use hot water, soap, and a new sponge when cleaning your refrigerator. Some disinfectant products can be toxic and should not be used around food.

www.organizingbuddy.com -- i made these boxes for the top of my cupboard. my other cupboard is purple so this is where the colour-choice is coming from. i had 90 cm (3 ft) space at the top of my cupboard, and i really wanted to use that space up. this is my own design, and i printed the papers out.

There are some great tips! This one is my favorite: "Start at the entrance to the room: Then, work your way around the room clockwise. Do not skip a spot. Whatever happens to be next, just do it."

 

So, this pile was in my craft room (where we both have our own desks and laptops), the first thing on the left after the entrance. I had five minutes to fix it!

 

What do we have here? A huge bag, which has been there since we came home from Oulu a month ago. Time to finish unpacking it, don't you think? On the bag there was my hubby's camera bag and a pair of dirty socks (his). A piece of cardboard, I don't know where that had come from. Some pieces of paper. Done!
